Masters Field quite possibly has a place in your superb presentation. From 1958 to 1962 we won 111 of 127 drag races, many at Masters Field Raceway. We also won first in class in the Orange Bowl Inaugural ROAD racing event in 1960. It was a sold out event with spectators creating a real traffic jam. I'm trying to find Buddy Jones, who raced fuel dragsters, then a Munroe-Zeder 1963/64 SS Plymouth at Masters Field. I think he was in an auto club, but can't remember the name. I was just a kid then, but thought the world of Buddy. My dad, Co Munroe, also had a great admiration for him too.

Below is the Miami Herald article about the death of Mr. ANTHONY ABRAHAM, a very well-known Miamian going back for many decades and a generous benefactor to many in our community. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Posted on Sunday, 10.23.11 Anthony Abraham: Auto dealership tycoon, philanthropist, dead at 100 BY CHRISTINE DOLEN Philanthropist and auto dealer Anthony Abraham, a Lebanese-American businessman who devoted much of his life to helping those in need, died Friday at Baptist Hospital of natural causes. On Feb. 25, he had become a centenarian, celebrating his 100th birthday with 375 family and friends at a lavish Arab-themed party at the Biltmore Country Club. The dapper Abraham, always impeccably turned out in a suit and tie, was born in 1911 in Youngstown, Ohio. He was the fourth of seven children of Lebanese parents and became the only one of his siblings to attend college, graduating from the University of Detroit. He dropped out of law school during the Depression to work for the Chicago Evening American, then launched his own Help Wanted News and became wealthy when he sold it. Abraham and his wife Genevieve moved to South Florida in 1951, relocating because George, the eldest of the couple’s five adopted children, was asthmatic. Soon bored with his early retirement, Abraham launched a Chevrolet dealership in the outskirts of Little Havana at the corner of Southwest Eighth Street and Le Jeune Road. He prospered again, turning the sprawling two-block business with its signature row of flapping American flags into the largest Chevrolet dealership in South Florida. Throughout his long life, the savvy businessman with the omnipresent cigar was also devoted to numerous causes involving faith and philanthropy. As a child, he had vowed, “If, by the grace of God I ever could, I would feed the poor and help the sick.” He more than made good on that promise. Abraham was the last living founding member of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., an institution founded by his actor friend Danny Thomas. In 1976, Abraham and his wife founded the Anthony R. Abraham Foundation, which has given millions to such organizations as Camillus House, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami, America’s Second Harvest, Miami Children’s Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Alonzo Mourning Charities, Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, Miami Rescue Mission and Boystown Catholic Charities. The foundation has also supported schools and hospitals in Lebanon and Haiti. A founding member of Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church in Coral Gables, Abraham was a long-time parishoner at the Church of the Epiphany in South Miami, where his funeral mass will be held on Wednesday morning. Thank you very much for bringing back memories. Born an raised in Hialeah an Miami. (I'm laughed at a lot but I still pronoun it Miama. low a on the ma). Raised a good bit, right across from Masters field, before they put in the 32nd Avenue bridge. The place was packed with soldiers during the Cuban Missile Crises. An you could see the place was covered up with pup tents, My dad an uncle, every weekend, took me to Medley an Hialeah. I liked Medley better. An I remember the lake in the middle of Hialeah. I went to high school with Dickie Anderson, Buddy Ryan, anFrankie an Danny Maddox. Before Anderson got big, I was the one who chained towed the race car from 27th Ave an 103 St. ( The fellow who owned the gas station was Frank James an I believe he drove at Hialeah also). I left Miami in 1966 for the service an returned in 1970. I drove for a while at the track. I would have to say, that I wasn't all that good at the driving. I do remember the night they had the big fire at the track. I was the one who actually ran over an drug the gas tank that came out of the car down the back strectch. I know this isn't going to may sense, but I remember a dog on the track between turns 3 an 4. (I can't explain that , but its true). But thank you for the memories. I remember 27th Ave from Opa Locka down to 79th. (That includes Funland). So thank you again. Jim

My Father, John Fitzgibbons was the owner/operator of Medley Speedway, later called Palmetto Speedway, Hollywood Speedway and West Palm Beach Speedway in the 1950's and 60's. I went to all the races when I was a kid living in Miami Springs. His tracks were the first NASCAR tracks in South Florida, and worked with Bill France. I was in Bill France's private box with my Father at Daytona Speedway on opening day. Red Farmer was sponsered by my Dad, and was racing that day. Dude....I WAS THERE!

When I got out of the Navy in 1959 I met marion Edwards at his paint store & he invited all of the guys from the Kustoms Car Club of Hialeah to go work in Sebring as the flag crew. There was also other clubs there that worked thru Marion as the pit boss. We would go up on Wed. w/about 5 diff. cars & about 10 guys. The races started on thurs. for different classes & the 12 hr. race was 10am to 10pm on saturday. I always worked the hairpin turn. Then I met Frank Pille that lived down the street from me on SE 1st place in Hialeah. He had the broom & fire crew at Hialeah & Medley speedway. I worked every race nite for him(volunteered) & we always got in free & got a free hotdog & a drink at every race. he had a nice 55 Ford pickup w/a push bumper & a fast working bunch of guys. When he went to work on the nite shift I started doing his job w/my 37 Willys p/u & the same group of guys. The Willys had a 327 Chevy engine & Automatic trans. I did that for about 3 years off & on. If there's anyone that use to work w/me or Frank & still remember things at the races let me know. Larry

Don No, I am not in the Springs anymore, I retired from the military out there, then moved back to Indiana. I was startioned in In. from 82-86 and got use to the farm way of life. When I first was stationed in the Springs in Jan 72, I decided that is where I wanted to live. It was fantastic out there, I bought a new 72 Mustange and 72 Jeep and put 32,000 miles on the car and 11,000 miles on the Jeep the first year there. Most of the Jeep miles were off-road riding, there were many MANY stage coach trails in the mountains and places to explore, I left for overseas (2nd time) in Oct 73 and returned to the Springs in Jan 75 with my new Luby's Truck. (did alot of camping) The area hadn't changed much and I still wanted to live there, stayed this time until Oct 80, but I grew with the town. Went to Fla (panhandle) for 2 years then to Ind. Went back to the Springs in Jan 86 and was blown away, by the size of the town, stayed there until I retired in Jan 92. Learned to snow ski at the Broadmore ski area, (don't think its there any more), skiied on Pikes Peak, (don't now if its open for skiing anymore) and skiied alot at the more famous resorts too. Loved the Cheyenne Mtn Zoo, spent alot of time in Manitou Springs, went to the State Fair every year in Pubelo, county fair in Calhan, and just enjoyed the fantastic weather, I will go back one day, just to see how much its changed. take care Pokey

Don I lived in Colorado Springs for about 12 years off and on between 72 - 92. I was stationed at ENT AFB, ( which is now the olympic training center) Peterson AFB, the USAF Academy, and Cheyenne Mtn. I loved it out there in the early 70's, but then in the later 70's the high tech industry moved in and the town really got out of hand. Now it is hard to tell where Pubelo, Colorado Spg and Denver start and stop, it is almost like Miami to Daytona along the coast . .

Don . When I was overseas, you could get a good price through the BX on new vehicles, and have them delived to a dealer close to your home. I told my dad what I was looking for and he went to Luby and they had the same vehicle (color and every option that I wanted), so he put a deposit to hold it, (they were able to beat the military price) and when I came home in Jan , I picked up my new 74 Chevy 3/4 ton pick-up and took it to Colorado. take care Pokey

I remember in 1966 on 27th Ave around 92nd St was Luby Chevrolet. But, across the street (27th Ave) was a Hertz car rental where they just delivered about 12 Shelby GT 350 Mustangs in all the available colors with gold striping now commonly know as "rent a racers". How they sparkled in the Sunshine State's glorious weather that day. Thank you Don for this great site. You have helped so many of us relive so many unthought memories of yesterdays gone by. Crane Cams moved to Hallandale Beach - not sure when - they were there in the '80s, I know. They were right off I95 & Hallandale Bch exit - near the "Button South". They're in Daytona now, I think

would like to sell my late mom's 1985 gucci cadillac with 52,000 miles.done by bramen of miami, it needs some body work but has original gucci appointments including continental wheel and wired hub caps with gucci insets. car is in hallandale. any ideas?

WHAT A GREAT SURPRISE TO FIND THIS WONDERFUL INFO & PICTURES OF OLD & GREAT MIAMI. MY DAD ,CHARLES SLAUGHTER OVED THERE IN 1924 AND I WAS BORN THERE IN 1934 IN COCONUT GROVE. IT WAS THE GREASTEST TOWN IN AMERICA TO BE RAISED IN BAR NONE. I JUST WISH EVERYONE FROM SOUTH FLORIDA COULD SEE THESE PICTURES AND COMMENTS. LONG LIVE THESE MEMORIES. RON SLAUGHTER

No pictures of Hialeah Speedway? That's a must for Hialeah car racing fans! I've truly enjoyed looking at all of the other pictures! Brought back many memories. I enjoyed the picture of the Royal Castle commisary. I now own that building. Built in 1956 it's still going stron!
