We moved to a new home on the west side of the Palm Springs section in June 1957 and I thought it was a really great place to grow up. Everything was brand new and it was definitely different and better than the much older northeast section of Miami where we lived before. I loved all the undeveloped open spaces and wilderness to the west and north of us. I think that the majority of kids who grew up in Hialeah would say it was a great place to grow up in the 1950's, 60's and maybe the 70's. I can't think of any city in America that experienced such a massive relocation of existing residents to Broward County and points further north in America and replacement by predominantly Spanish-speaking immigrants from other countries.

HIALEAH CHRONOLOGY: 1901 – Missouri cattleman James H. Bright recognizes the potential in the Everglades for development of experimental grasslands 1905 – State action towards reclamation of the Everglades, including construction of major drainage canals, were implemented by Governor N. B. Broward 1909 – Bright purchases one square mile of submerged land northwest of Miami on the north bank of the Miami River 1911 – Bright begins a cattle and poultry business on his newly drained land; Bright is influential in eradicating tick fever which threatened the newly established Florida cattle industry 1911 – After being turned down by the Wright Brothers, Miami asks famed New York aviator Glenn H. Curtiss to establish a flying school in the area 1916 – In response to complaints about aircraft noise, Curtiss looks west and north of Miami for new ground for an airstrip; James H. Bright gives Curtiss the land for free 1916 – After establishing their airstrip, the friends/business partners also establish the Deer Park Residential Community in Hialeah 1917 – Curtiss buys out James’ brother, Charles W. Chronology of Hialeah (continued): 1920 – Recognizing the coming Florida land boom, Curtiss and Bright form their own ranch company and began selling building lots 1921 – Using the Seminole Indian word for “high prairie”, Bright and Curtiss plat the town of “Hialeah” on March 5th; the plat was officially signed on March 8th 1921 – The Curtiss-Bright Ranch Company donates large tracts of land to the community to build two churches, a park, the city hall, a school, a municipal water plant, a golf course, and race track 1921 – Hialeah residential community of Deer Park and the Hialeah Dog Track open 1921 – Hialeah opens its first post office on April 26th 1922 – Curtiss-Bright Ranch Company posts record profits by selling $1 million in realty in a period of ten days 1922 – Hialeah Women’s Club first formed at the Bright’s personal home 1922 – Miami begins construction of the Miami Studios Motion Picture complex in Hialeah; the studio would only survive a few years 1923 – Bright and Curtiss sell their golf course and water rights to its fresh-water springs to the City of Miami; along with donated land and seven miles of right of way, this event allows Miami to secure its future water source through eventual construction of a municipal water plant 1923 – Bright persuades the Dade County School Board to build a new school in Hialeah 1924 – A donated portion of land from Bright and Curtiss allows for the construction of the Miami Jockey Club and the first Jai-Alai fronton in Hialeah 1925 – Grocer Fred W. Chronology of Hialeah (continued): 1950s – Hialeah City Council removes the personal property tax in a bid to bring new industry into the Hialeah area; growth of light industry and availability of cheap housing begins Cuban immigration boom 1955 – Hialeah repeals inventory tax in 1955 as a big to draw even more businesses to the area 1960s – Hialeah’s reputation as a manufacturing and distribution center draws an even high proportion of Latin population 1970 – U.S. Census reports list Hialeah’s population at above 100,000 for the first time 1971 – Milander elected as mayor for the last time; over 2000 manufacturing businesses now call Hialeah home 1974 – Milander dies while in office as mayor in 1974 1975 – Due to exhaustive industry efforts, 52 percent of Hialeah population is now of Latin descent 1983 – Hialeah opens state-of-the-art 911 communications center 1983 – Hialeah Mayor Raul Martinez travels with a group to New York City with Miami Mayor Maurice Ferre in an attempt to boost Miami-area tourism and business profile 1984 – Began in September 1981, Hialeah completes a monument to the city’s past by entombing 75-ton cement blocks that once perched for 54 years atop the lift bridge connecting Hialeah and Miami Springs at East First Avenue 1986 – The racetrack tries to revive its past by adding twilight post times to the Hialeah Race Track 1986 – Hialeah attempts to provide more high-end housing for families by encouraging development around Palmetto General Hospital to the west 1987 – Hialeah Speedway celebrates its 33rd birthday with a renovation that cost $100,000 1987 - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awards Hialeah $2.8 million to help construct a 192-unit apartment building at the city's downtown redevelopment project 1989 – Hialeah caps a renovation project at Hialeah Race Track at $10 million in an effort to revive its flagging horse industry 1990 – Hialeah suspends Mayor Raul Martinez in April after he was charged with acquiring almost $1 million in cash and real estate from developers in exchange for zoning approvals 1991 – Hialeah Mayor Raul Martinez convicted on federal extortion charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison 1993 – Raul Martinez wins re-election over Nilo Juri, but the results are eventually thrown out due to voter fraud charges 1994 – Raul Martinez wins re-election after 1993 race was vacated by judge…election officials said 60.8 percent of the city's registered voters cast ballots -- the highest turnout since November 1957 1995 – Overwhelmed by Cuban refugees, Hialeah asks federal government for help as the city expects up to 40,000 more refugees and immigrants to add to the largest Cuban city in the U.S. 1998 – Hialeah Race Track in dire straits as barely 5000 people see opening day races; track continues to lose face in a decades-long struggle over prime racing dates with Gulfstream and Calder Race Course 1999 - More than 400 people gathered on the Palmetto on June 30th to protest the Coast Guard's treatment of six Cuban rafters, blocking the northbound lanes at Northwest 103rd Street for about four hours. The protest turned into a battle after 2 a.m. Seven people were arrested 2001 – Hialeah Race Track, once considered among America's most vibrant thoroughbred establishment, ends its 75th and last racing season

This is the obituary for Mr. FENTON C. EWING, a long-time Hialeah real estate broker who moved to Hialeah in 1924 and passed away in December 2011 at the age of 94. He brokered the sale of the White Belt Dairy section that is now the Palm Springs / Palm Springs Mile area of Hialeah and developed the Flamingo Shopping Center in east Hialeah and Westland Mall on W. 49th Street. + + + + + FENTON C. EWING OBITUARY + + + + + EWING, FENTON C., son of Harry T. and Helen Ewing, passed away in Homestead at age 94. Born in New York City on July 17, 1917, his mother died in 1918 and he moved to Hialeah to be with his father at age 7. A graduate of Miami Edison High School, he served in the US Army in the European theater during WWII returning as a First Lieutenant. After honorable discharge, he pursued a career with National Cash Register Company. In the early 1950's, he followed his father into the real estate field. As a real estate broker, he specialized in commercial sales/development in the Hialeah and Miami Springs area. He developed Hialeah's first modern shopping center (Flamingo Plaza) and the first enclosed mall (Westland Mall). Mr. Ewing brokered the sale of White Belt Dairy in west Hialeah and developed the property into the Palm Springs Mile/Westland shopping and residential successes they are today. In addition, he was primarily responsible for the creation and development of Vista Memorial Gardens cemetery in Miami Lakes where he himself will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony. After retiring from real estate, Mr. Ewing became a world traveler captaining his own yachts, one as large as 123 ft. staffed with crew members from throughout the world. After sailing adventures which included exploring many countries on most of the continents and islands, he established a home base in Costa Rica for 10 years before returning to Miami and finally to the Homestead area. He is survived by his wife Maria, daughters Barbara Wood and Lisa Ewing, sons Bruce Ewing, Donald Ewing and Richard Ewing, grandchildren Steven Wood, Randal Wood, Joanna Ewing, and Harrison Ward, great grandchildren Kyle, Jordan, Chandler, Taylor and Hailey.
