Hialeah Speedway, one of Hialeah's most memorable landmarks, was closed a few weeks after my visit for the last time. My buddies and I used to go there from the late 1950's to the mid-1960's because of the action on the track and in the spectator stands. I had not been to the speedway since August 1966 when I was home on leave from USCG boot camp, and yet everything seemed familiar despite the great passage of time. The roar of the track could be heard all over Hialeah on Saturday evenings and up in Miami Lakes if the winds were right. Unfortunately the track became surrounded by development and the land was far too valuable to maintain the acreage as a motor speedway. A large new Lowe's and a Target store have been built on the south side of the property and an Applebee's restaurant, one of the busiest in the Applebee's chain, is now in the northeast corner along W. 16th Avenue at W. 37th Street. The Applebee's has a wall mural honoring Hialeah Speedway in the hallway leading to the restrooms. I think of the Speedway every time I go into the Lowe's, which is my favorite home improvement store out of all of them in the area. They have a great staff working there and it's a beautiful spacious store.

But what a shame that an area like this becomes so overcrowded with people and buildings that the value of open land escalates to the point where you can't profitably operate a speedway for the enjoyment of many. Frankly, we were lucky Hialeah Speedway lasted as long as it did considering all of the development down here. South Florida had a good number of tracks over the years, such as Medley Speedway (later Palmetto Speedway), Hollywood Speedway, Miami-Hollywood Speedway Park, Broward Speedway, Ft Lauderdale-Davie Speedway and Palm Beach Fairgrounds Speedway, and Hialeah Speedway outlasted them all, presenting weekly stock car races for 50+ years.

@John D - if it had a big pond in the middle, it was Hialeah. The speedway had a pond ("lake" they called it) which existed into the mid-late '80s, altho by then it had shrunk to a large puddle at the turn 3-4 end. Around 1990 they filled in what was left of the pond and built the cross-over in the middle, for figure-8 races.

I lived in Hialeah in 1955 - 1957. I lived on E. 18Th street near 10th ave. We were in the part of Hialeah that attended Junior High School in Miami Springs. Along with most of my friends, I had a motor scooter and delivered The Miami Daily News 7 days a week. We also went to the races almost every week, but I can't remember the name of the track. I do remember that the track had a big pond in the middle, so it must not have been Hialeah Raceway. I think it was sort of west of town, and there were no houses near the track. Do any race fans remember the name of that track? I put a lot of miles on my scooter and even rode it in Ohio when we moved there. Problem is, you can only ride about 7 months a year rather than year round. We also used to roller skate at an outdoor rink somewhere near by, but I can't remember its name either. I have not been back to Florida since 1957 but have fond memories of my years there. Those were some great years.

Paul Becker, former racer at Hialeah Speedway, passed away recently and I happened to read his obituary. BECKER Obituary BECKER, PAUL J., of Homestead FL, age 67, passed away peacefully at home, August 18, 2016, after a very short, unexpected battle with Leukemia (AML). Prior to his retirement in 2006, Paul owned and operated Becker's Steel for over 35 years. In the late 60's and early 70's he raced Late Model Modified stock cars at Hialeah Speedway (9B) and was Rookie of the Year in 1969. After that he was involved with motorcycle racing of Motocross bikes, as a rider and then an owner. But, Paul's priority was always family and Becker's Steel until his retirement. Recently, he enjoyed woodworking and traveling in his motorhome, with his beloved wife of 45 years, Marie, and his special 16 year old cat, Spikey. Paul appreciated the beauty in a piece of wood, the sound of a well-tuned engine, the value of family and friendships (including the furry ones), and the love of his wife/best friend, who was at his side during every journey. His craftsmanship in wood and metal left the world more beautiful, and his caring heart gave us warm memories to cherish. "Beck" will be greatly missed. Paul is survived by his loving wife, Marie, his sisters, Paulette Lopez, Cathy Hoover, Margie Mahnke, Jackie Busha, and brother, Joseph Becker. Hello all, My Uncle was a race car builder and mechanic back in the 60's. His name is Jim Emens, and his Race car driver was George Dalton. He also knew Bobbie/Kennie Brack. All stemming from Hialeah Stock Car Racing. The car was #27, and it was a Red Ford. I have been looking for pic's of the car, and my Uncle would love to be in touch with any of the above mentioned. Thank you Don, there is no reason to carry or create discontion while reminiscing about old times. I forgot to mention the very good Dicky Anderson. There is a young man who write he would love to hear about his Grandfather Francis Babe Hauber. My Dad was absent and I had no one to talk to about matters and Mr Hauber always talked to me. I came home from Vietnam and the war with is rial started and mr. HAUBER SAT ME DOWN AND TALKED TO ME AS IF I WAS ONE OF HIS SONS. He was really a fun man to be around. In a feature His son Bobby spun him out and banged his car up. Me, Hauber was so angry. When Bobby came to the pits he went over to Bobby an asked why he spun him and Bobby said YOU WERE IN MY WAY. we all had a big laugh over that. Then there was the time at Palm Beach. Bobby was third and coming in the race and a guy put Bobby on his roof. Bobby was sliding right at us and Mr Hauber lunged to the spinning car to rescue his son but he would have n bee killed so I grabbed him and pulled him away from the track. Where we we is where Bobby broke the wall. Another time Mr. Hauber made me roll laughing is when his car stalled for no reason at a traffic light and the guy behind him kept blowing his horn. Mr.Hauber asked the guy if he could get the car running and the guy agreed to help...well the guy was looking under the hood and Mr Hauber started blowing the guys horn. The guy was enraged and asked zmr Hauber why he blowing the horn and Mr Hauber said you were doing the horn blowing when I tried to fix the,so I thought n would help you. He was always pulling stuff on the group

Freddy Smith, thank you very much for posting your memories and comments, especially with all the names of racers that you remembered with no negative comments about anything. I'm sure you will jog some memories of the viewers of this page which part of the intent of this site, helping people remember more details of what life was like back in the 50's, 60's and later decades. It's a pity that land values have increased to the point where auto racing can't continue to exist for the enjoyment of younger generations living down here, and yet another reason that we should be grateful for living when we did. Most of us old guys are going through the old man stuff and all I can tell you is to hang in there as long as you can. I never thought I would live this long to tell you the truth and I'm grateful to modern medicine. Thanks again for writing, Freddy! Don .

Hi I'm Freddy Smith, I drove the 61 tornado car and later changed my number to the 46. The 46 was a black 56 Chevrolet That I made look like a 55. I bought a 55 ford from Bobby Coyle and raced it for two weeks with his 57 on it. I'm so sorry to hear Bobby went to be with our Lord. I really liked him. Bobby Johns was my idol from seven years old to the present. Mr Edwards is a wonderful man. I thought the world of him and I listed to him very intently. Little Marion painted my 56 Chevy black for me My best friend at the track was Bobby Hauber, Bobby dad and little brother Earl. I went on to race in Illinois, indiana, Arizona, Georgia and Tennessee. Never had the $ to make it in racing but it was fun. I've had open heart surgery, knee operated on several occasions and other nagging old man stuff. I'd jump into a hot rod in a second if I could. Nothing like a motor turning high rpms. So many great racers came from Hialeah speedway. Bobby Johns, the Allisons, Red Farmer, Banjo Mathews, Allan Rags Carter, Ralph Moody Gary Balough, peewee Griffin, Buddy Griffin, Bobby Brack, Vance Murry, Larry Rogero, Randy Tissot. These guys were well known everywhere I went. Mr. Flingos was a good man as well. I miss these men. Mr. Edwards, Bobby Johns, Little Marion, Paul Becker who drove the 9 car. I have a picture of my dads (Everette Vaughn) race car with him and his driver(Michael Haggi) the number is either 81 or 87. It was taken between 1965 and 1970 @ Hialeah Speedway. Don, I bought Alan Clark's 1940 ford coupe from his sister for $600.00 after he was drafted in the service. It had a modified 59a block. . I was in the Ramblers Road Club and went to the drags with it often. I think Alan's number was 23 and maybe orange and white color when the Speedway was active in the late 1950's. I am still into Hotrods at 75 and presently have a 1931 ford roadster with a 350 chevy engine. I just sold a pristine 66 chevy truck to a dealer in Tulsa Thanks for your post on Hialeah Speedway.

Coyle who raced at Hialeah Speedway from the 1960's onward: + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + ROBERT F. "BOBBY" COYLE COYLE, ROBERT F. "BOBBY", 64, passed away peacefully, Sunday, July 8, 2012, at his Southwest Ranches home, surrounded by family. Bobby was born in Providence, RI, and moved to Florida in 1957. He was an electrician for over 40 years and a proud member of the IBEW Local Union 349. Bobby was a fixture in Florida Stock Car Racing since the 1960's. He was honored to be inducted into the first class of the Hialeah Speedway Hall of Fame in 2010. A huge family man, he is survived by his wife Ronna; 4 children; Jason (Crystal), Ryan (Sara), Christine & Shannon; and 3 grandchildren Lily, Kell & Molly. One night I ran up on a pile sand protecting a light pole and broke a tie rod on my 50 ford. My partner scoured the local junk yards, all closed that late, climbed the fence, and tried to steal one. He was unsuccessful so we got someone to weld it together to tow it home. We didn't have a trailer just a tow bar. We drug that thing back to homestead with him inside the race car steering to keep it on the road. my uncle LN Dodd opened the track after old opa locka closed in 1954 we( my family) built all that old place from fences to the refressment stand bleachers and all My father Bill Gibson was the track electrican and we live in that old house to nt south east corner it .straight accross from the big fig tree i eremember flip-flop fingos,jackie evans banjo matthews,marion edwards ,he owned orangblossom craft store on 36 st., raggs carter,???Clark,#26,. went every sat,nite. cleaned it up on sunday morning made loads of money under the stands all the drunks the fighting in the pits.a few drivers wives went at each other when their husband's bumped .When i left in 1961 thought i'ds never wanted to see it again. but it was great when you all were gone and i had it all to myself rode cows horses in the parking lot camped out built fires in the winter to cook out i'm sorry now that i have no place like that to go to. john gibson

David Coffin Grew up at 2578 W 9th Ct. A Block over was the Mc Cormicks. I remember hanging out at the track 1973-1976 when one of my high school buddys ( Joe Winchell #87) raced at Hialeah. Great times,those Saturday nites. Have since moved all over the state and now live out of state but came back in 2006 to check out old haunts and OMG!!! Cant believe how much concrete has been poured. Spaghetti bowl at 49 st and palmetto. Just lucky enough to hang onto the memories!

Ken Griese I first attended the Speedway when I was 9 years old in 1955. My mother owned the restaurant attached to the Pure Oil Station on Okeechobee Rd. and I would walk to the track and back alone. Probably couldn't do that these days! THe cars were so colorful and the drivers were just everyday grease monkeys. I loved it!

When i was a kid we spent every saturday night at the track. One time my dad was driving there and a stock car passed us on the road. No trailer, No truck, Just a stock car with a jack hanging out the back window. I was hooked, these were the bad boys of racing. In 92 my dad put me in a race car i ran for 15 years after that day. I will never forget the first and last time i pulled on the track. Hialeah speedway was a childhood dream come true.

i remember lots of the drivers. bill flingos, bobby brack, larry rogero, gary balough, vance murray, nokie mallory, dick anderson, shorty mills, jeff dufrense, mike borghi, bob hamke, paul connors, etc. i can also remember when it was out in the sticks, and the grandstands would cheer when the mosquito spray truck would make a pass through the parking lot.

I grew up in Carol City Florida (1960-1974), my grandfather lived in Opa-Locka and my Aunt and Uncle lived in Hialeah. I remember going to the Hialeah speedway every single saturday night. I enjoyed the racing and I even had a chance to ride in the car of several drivers during my younger years there. Although I haven't been in the area since we moved away in 1974, I am sure going to miss reading about the speedway. Just as much as I am going to miss the Orange Bowl as I grew up going there watching the Dolphins play. Hialeah Speedway will always hold a special place in my heart with all the wonderful memories of watching the racing, riding around the track, seeing the wrecks, watching the figure 8 races and going into the pits. Goodbye Hialeah Speedway you had a great and glorious run.

I too miss the Speedway. I just about grew up there. All the names below really stir some memories. I don't know about the Mills, but i recently saw a picture with a nice story about Bobby Brack, who i think still lives in Miami and is an accomplished off shore fisherman. Bobby Day had moved to Tampa and has passed away. Marty Little has a ton of pics and history about Hialeah Speedway. My uncle Banjo used to race Opa-locka and Medley with Bobby Johns, and many others. Billy Hess Jr. is involved in Nascar, inventing and fabricating cars/parts. I hung around and worked on many cars including Nokie Mallory, Marty Handshaw, Capt. Jack Maddox, Joe Edwards, Gary Balogh, Mike Mc Crary, Dickie Anderson, Buddy Ryan, Ron Lynch a.k.a. Santa Claus and I'm sure some more that self inflicted loss of brain cells has affected my ablity to remember. I remember the Sousa brothers, they lived behind the Catalina shopping center. They raced with Bobby Coyle, the Burkhalter bros, the Barnwells, and many many others.Some of my friends refered to me as Tom Columbian. You out there Kevin? In the early 60's, I was playing with a band known as Russ Samuel & the Vanguards. One night our manager booked an appearance at Hialeah Speedway to promote our latest single. None of us in the band were to crazy about the idea, but we went and we played between races, and we wound up having the best time ever in South Florida (with our clothes on). The fans were sensational and we sold a few records.

Late 50's & early 60's friday & sat. nights were spent at Medly & Hialeah speedway with my buddy Wayne Slappy whoses dad was the mech. for Donnie Allison who drove the number 88 for Jack Cherry's Citie service gas station located on Palm Ave & w. 53 st. Donnie and brother Bobby { #312} later went on to become part of the " Alabama Gang" of NASCAR , also don't forget Red Farmer who still drives dirt track.

The speedway was built and operated by the DAV, if my memory serves me right. Marion Edwards was a neighbor of mine.He lived off W. 40th place and I on W.39th place. His son and my son were close friends. Marion operated an automotive paint supply business. It really hurt when Marion Jr. was killed in a race.

Whatever happend to Jimmy Mills or his brother Shorty or the infamous late model driver Bobby Brack. How about the track photog I think he was known as 5X5 Bobby Day. Stan Dew 15-May-2007 17:11 I am sorry to see the track close. I was one of the few there on opening day back in 54. What always amazed me was the 2 car with a Dairy Queen cone on roof. I believe the driver was Marion Edwards. As I no longer live anywhere close I will always have memories of Saturday night as a kid there.
