W. 9th Lane, Hialeah, Florida


I grew up at 5691 and my bedroom window is visible on the left. Barbara Sullivan lived at 5661 (after the Gene and Theresa Kayal family), the Sheffields (George, Jackie, daughter Lorri and son Michael) at 5631, and the Mehalko family (Paul and Ginny(?) with children Paul Jr., Michael, Donna and Andrew) at 5601. Thanks to Kevin Jeffries, who lived at 970 W. 56th Place, just to the right of this photo's contents, for remembering the Mehalkos.

I am not from this era but I really love reading about this and seeing the photos. I grew up in Hialeah Gardens in the 90s. As a Social Worker I visiting many of the homes that listed here to visit with the elderly owners. Most of them are of Hispanic origin that moved in the 60s but. I did have a member had been living there since the 40's. It fascinated me that he still lived there and loved seeing his pictures and hearing his stories. Thank you -Aura

OMG! It is so neat to see this and the memories is just too much. My brother Rene and I played soccer and football with the Mehalkos starting with Palm Springs Optimist Club and through High School at HML. Donna made such a cute cheerleader in blue with amazing long hair. I remember going to so many games in the back of their pickup truck. I went to college with Lorrie Sheffield and Russel Poulson too. Thank you so much for this site

Hi, my name is Donna Mehalko we lived in the house (5601 w 9th Lane) from about 1963 until my Dad (deceased) sold in 1984or 85. We were the second owner through a foreclosure. Several years prior to the purchase of the (5601) house we lived on the next block (still on 9th Lane) next door to the Hypke's and Hines. Directly across the street the Louden's and on the corner the Poulson and the Wilson's. The Sheffields George, Jackie, Lorri and Michael all live in the Cooper City and Parkland, fl area. On 12th Ave and 9th Lane was the Hyer's, Fred, Ardis (both deceased) and Phil who lives in Lake Worth area with his wife and two adult children. The Riggs' Joe (deceased) Diana and Brannon lived behind us. Brannon lives in Key West and Diana lives in Ft. Laud. The Barmios' Steve lives in WPB, Ken in Charlotte, NC Sharon and Mr. and Mrs B in Franklin, TN, Basil JR. lives in a new place all the time I can't keep up with him. I know the Hipkes' live in Crystal River, Fl with their two adult children Bobbie and Tracy and Grandchildren. As for the Mehalko's, Mike lives in Greensboro, NC with his wife Toni have two children (Chris and Emily) Andrew and wife Gina have two boys (Matthew and Michael) in WPB, Paul and wife Angie have a daughter (Sarah) in Lake City, Fl and me in Charlotte with husband Dave and daughters Leah and Kendall.
I think you did a wonderful thing here. It's nice to hear about all of the old Hialeah neighbors we hung out with so long ago. Maybe one day soon we can all meet. Thanks, Donna

Kevin - a big thank you for writing and remembering the Mehalko family. I don't believe they were the original family in that home but they must have been there around the time of this photo. I was your brother Drake's age. Don

The Mehalko family lived at 5601 West 9th Lane. Paul and Ginny(?). Mrs. Mehalko died of cancer around 1970. The kids were Paul Jr., Michael, Donna and Andrew.
