Amanita flavorubens (Amanita flavorubescens) 9987.jpg

Westchester Wilderness Preserve

The cap, stipe and base of several amanita species redden where disturbed by bruising, touching or in response to slug-bites. Among these are the 'cleft-footed' Amanita brunnescens and Amanita brunnescens var. 'pallida'; as well as Amanita rubescens, Amanita rubescens var. alba and Amanita flavorubens (also called Amanita flavorubescens). The open specimen above measured about five inches across.
