The Hermitage is the home of our seventh president, also known as the hero of New Orleans from the War of 1812. At the time of his death in 1845 the property had 1000 acres and approximately 140 slaves. The chief crop was cotton but the farm was self-sufficient.
He and his wife, Rachel, are buried here. You can take a tour of the grounds and visit inside the mansion where almost all furnishings are original.
The couple was childless but they adopted Rachel's nephew, Andrew Jackson, Jr., and he was their sole heir.
