I took this photo of one of the barns that stands right behind the race track. This is a huge complex that includes not only the grandstand and track but many barns and fields.
Keeneland Race Course has been holding live races since 1936.
It was the last track in North America to broadcast races over its public address system in part to its pride in sticking with racing traditions. However, Keeneland has adopted one racing innovation: They replaced the dirt surface with the new Polytrack surface in 2006 which gives the horses and jockeys a safer ride. On a personal note: When I went down to the racetrack and picked up a handful of what I thought was dirt, I found it full of sticky colored specks that were very hard to wash off.
Two other interesting facts about this beautiful facility: Most of the racing scenes from "SEABISCUIT" were shot here.
And the Keeneland Yearling Sale held every September is world famous.
