Mammouth Kill Site

San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area near Sierra Vista

Murray Springs is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world. It contains an undisturbed record of the past 40,000 years. Excavations were conducted by the University of Arizona from 1966 to 1971 under the guidance of Dr. Vance Haynes.
Today you can take a self-guided trail tour of the area that was excavated.

Looking across the wash at the banks in this photo shows where the bones of a female mammouth named Big Eloise were found by archaeologists. Even some of her footprints were found and preserved.
