Ludlow Death Pit

Ludlow

On a side road outside Trinidad is a monument to the people who died in the Ludlow Coal Massacre on April 20, 1914.
The Colorado National Guard attacked the tent camp of striking coal miners. Oblivious to the fact that 2 women and 11 children were still hiding in a pit beneath one of the tents, they set fire to the remaining tents. Unable to escape, the women and children all suffocated.
Their deaths outraged the nation and was an important event in the improvement of working conditions for miners.
This site remains an inspiration because of its importance to organized labor.
