Barboursville Ruins

Barboursville, Virginia

An historic landmark designed by Thomas Jefferson for Virginia Governor James Barbour, it was built in 1814. Children playing with sparklers in the attic on Christmas Day 1844 started a fire that destroyed the house.
The story goes that the family pulled tables and Christmas dinner out onto the lawn and sat and watched the house burn since they were powerless to put it out.
