Came into existence in 1881 with the building of the New Mexico and Arizona Railroad. Now home to the San Pedro River Resource Conservation Area, this building was in danger of collapsing until it was stablized. They've got the whole area fenced off until the project is completed. Fairbank once had a population of 15,000 (1882). It was originally called Junction City but was latger renamed after N.K. Fairbank of Chicago who helped finance the railroad. The town was built on an old Mexican land grant which was later bought by the Boquillas Land and Cattle Company in 1901.
BLM owns and manages the land today as it is part of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area.
DECEMBER 2006 UPDATE: There is now a new entrance to the "Fairbank Townsite". Park on the grounds and visit all the buildings of the townsite. You can walk to the cemetery and old mill ruins on a flat and level trail.
