Be sure to also get the Ross King book I mention below. It's all about the times and the interaction between all those greats while focusing on his travails during the painting of the ceiling. And it sets the record straight (through Michelangelo's own letters and his friends') on some of the misinterpretations by Irving Stone. Fascinating book. Thanks for your note!

I just finished "The Agony and The Ecstacy" by Irving Stone... my search for pictures of Michelangelos work led me here.

For anyone going to see these, I recommend picking up, before, the book by
Ross King - 'Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling' ... I wish I had.
Fantastic backgrounder and a fun read.
