080603_134820_3378 White Visitor Grey Day (Tue 03 Jun 08)

Pyrmont, NSW

The P&O cruise ship Pacific Dawn (70,285 gross tons, 245.06 m (804') long, 56m (183') high, 11 decks) is a regular visitor to the Darling Harbour passenger berth. In fact, she's about the only ship that ever turns up there these days. On this occasion the day was as grey as the converted wharves that conceal her bow. (Which are now very, VERY expensive residential and commercial buildings.)

This might have been an interesting composition in contrasting horizontal and vertical lines were it not for the angled roof of the Channel 7 studios on the left. Unfortunately there wasn't anything I could do about that; this shooting position was as good as it got.

Unlesss.... hmmmm... hey, hand me my bazooka will ya? I've got an idea....

Edit September 2023: Well, there is certainly a bit to unpack following the last 15 years.

First, the east Darling Harbour wharves were incorporated into the Barangaroo redevelopment, and ceased to be used as wharves in the early 2010s. White Bay (seen in various shots elsewhere in my galleries) took over as the location for any ships which are small enough to pass under the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 2013.

Second, Pacific Dawn (whose name before a 2007 refit was Regal Princess), was moved to a base in Brisbane in December 2009 so that Pacific Jewel and Pacific Pearl could be based in Sydney.

Move forward another decade, and P&O Cruises Australia announced that she was going to be retired in early 2021, along with sister Pacific Aria.

Then Covid happened.

The ship was flogged off to another cruise line (which rapidly failed), then sold for $US9.5 million to another outfit that planned to use her as a floating city in the Gulf of Panama. (The ship had cost $US277 million to build for Princess Cruises in 1991, but of course with nobody sailing during the pandemic cruise ship prices made a dramatic trip around the S bend.) The ship was renamed after the founder of Bitcoin.

So, that worked well.

In May 2021 it was purchased by a new company called Ambassador Cruise Line, and is currently sailing as the MS Ambiance.

Love how the medium tele focal length has flattened the perspective, aided by the relative of contrast. It shouts "crowded" at me. It's a very attractive result.
