I have read many times that the ancient seafarers found their arrival at Capetown to be exhilarating - not only for
the next days of relief from being in the southern seas, but for the astonishing first glimpses of Table Mountain.
I knew that to be true when I was on deck as my ship sailed towards the berth before dawn on a chilly
April morning. The mountain appeared over the horizon and grew large - a sleeping giant. The sun
then joined in the welcome, and by the time we had docked, we early risers had been greeted to this
imposing mountain awaking again for a day under the brilliant South African light - and as ancient guardian
