I have always been amazed by the contrast of summer and winter at First Beach!
Summertime is calm, warm, bringing families on vacation and people from around the world.
Walking and playing on a wide sandy beach, swimming in the gentle waves.
In the winter you will most likely be alone.
The wind whips the cries of gulls who whirl between the crashing waves
and the rain comes in hard, mostly horizontal.
Old growth trees batter the shore eventually lodging in the sand
to become a jungle gym for fair weather visitors.
On the rare nice day in the winter you’ll want to walk
on the beach and you will have it to yourself.
The Coast Guard will be doing wave rescue drills.
The grey whales will be swimming past making their way to the far north .
The native fishermen will be fighting with the seals and sea loins
with a pike long enough for them to retrieve a salmon or steelhead from their nets.
First Beach has something for everyone depending on the season.
