There's a few events happening on the island this weekend to celebrate Andrew Blain Baird
who in 1910 made aviation history when he made the first all-Scottish heavier-than-air powered flight
in an aircraft designed and built by himself and of which took off from the beach out at Ettrick.
This evening a memorial plaque was unveiled on his grave and
tomorrow there's ceremonies first out at the Airstrip and then Ettrick later on.
It may have been seven years after the Wright Brothers, but things developed far more slowly in those days.
Today, something is invented in Year One and by Year Seven it is the Apple must-have!
That was the age of invention... can't imagine anybody achieving that now, would be too stifled by having to get permits insurance and health & safety.
