Rock Formation

Eppenbrunn

We hiked up to the Altschlossfelsen - which would translate into "old castle rock".
It is a very impressive rock formation, a series of sandstone mushrooms, which are connected at their
"caps" and which form a ridge of more than one kilometer. It is not a single ridge but rather a ridge
with several side ridges, all colored brightly red. Erosion has left the caps almost unimpaired while
the stems have been thoroughly eaten away. It is hidden deeply inside the forest almost directly on
the German / French border. The area is about 50 miles down the road from our home.

Beautiful shot! I love these geological formations. These are so similar to ones we have around here. Our Minnehaha Falls are much the same the hard Platville limestone overlays the soft St.Peter sandstone, the falling water slowly erodes the fall upstream.

This is an impressive looking rock. It is large in size based upon the size of the tree stump.
