the place has come a long way from the flood of 1977. had a hand in the clean up of the place.

My name is Peggy Hope Bush Holbert. My grandfather Stanislous Balazy worked in the coal mines in Windber. He arrived in the United States in 1897, immigrating from Ostrelenka Poland. He helped build St. Johns church.
He was introduced to my grandmother by Father Soos. They married in 1909 and their first born was my father Chester Stanislous Balazy, born March 6, 1910. My father had five sisters and three brothers.
My granddad changed his last name to Bush because there was another Balazy that worked in the mine and they kept getting the pay checks mixed up, Granddad set the dynamite sticks in the mines. He was known in the Windber area as Frank Bush.

Such a great place ... and right down the street from here ... Rizzo's ... one of the best places ever for great Italian food . I live in Michigan now but once a year I make a trip to Windber and a dinner at Rizzo's .

The research for the John Stringer family shows he was born 1858 in England and died 1928 in Windber,he is buried in the old East End Cem. The census of 1910 shows he is listed as a photographer, their children were Keturah, a music teacher; Jennie, a photographer, Robert & Mabel. Keturah, born in 1879, married Thomas Kidd Fornear. their children were Franklin, Jean Louise, Olive Mae, and Ivy Lynette. This family played an important role in Windber and many photos can be found with their name as the photographer can be found on them.
The complete research on the family is being placed in the Heritage Room. at the Museum.

I grew up in Windber, maiden name Fornear. My aunts and grandfather grew up in Windber. My grandmother's name Stringer and had a photographic studio. My grandfather was the Methodist preacher at the church on Cambria Ave. I lived on Graham and Somerset and at my grandmother's house on 15th and Cambria Ave. Across the street from the house in the photograph at the same address. I think the address was 1492 Cambria. The Eureka Store was an upscale store when I lived there and I went to the Arcadia theater so many times. The holiday parades were wonderful and my aunts family lived in Windber for so many years. My aunts name is Olive Fornear and she is 96 yrs old and to be 97 on May 3, 2009. Hooray for her.
Great place to grow up.
