Windber, in southwestern Pennsylvania near Johnstown, was established as a coal mining town around 1900. Migrants from many countries in southern and eastern Europe settled in the community as miners and their cultural, religious, and political heritage is still apparent in the town today. Tom, I enjoyed your pictures posted here. I spent a lot of time in Windber as a child and still really miss it. My grandfather (Clell Pearson) grew up in Windber and it's where my mother (Diane Pearson) grew up as well. My grand parents lived there until 1979. We spent a couple weeks every summer and all of our holidays at my grand parents. Looking at your pictures brought back many fond memories like the smell of Lamonicas bread baking. It seemed like you could smell it all over town!

Tom, your pictures are wonderful. I grew up in Windber in the 60's. It was a wonderful small town. We walked all over without a worry in the world. Some of my best memories involve the streets and friends I remember from the time I spent there.It was the perfect place for a child to grow up. Thanks.
