I have been doing work on our family tree and decided to try and find some info about my birthplace. I was born in Windber (I think it was Ellis Hospital), lived in one of the miner's duplex houses in Mine #42. I remember the walking the train tracks, going to the "big" store which I assume was in Windber, living in the tiny half of the duplex and so much more. We left Mine 42 sometime around 1951 and I have been back to that area only twice. Now that I am retired, I am considering another trip back to check out the old place. There probably won't be much remaining that will look anything like I recall. Thanks so much for the sharing this photo gallery. It is beautiful!

Great town,I was born there but we left when I was very young. Went back every year for two weeks at a time after we left. Always felt comfortable and relaxed when we were there. We stayed at the farm with my grand mother. After looking at these pics I think I'll be planning another trip to Windber. Thank You for bringing back some good memories.

There's just something about this place that get's you . I don't know what it is , it's just there . My family is from Windber but their all gone now yet I still visit and think of the fun I had there when visiting . I remember the Urda's , Onderko's , and the old coal hill's behind Railroad Street . I now still visit at least once a year , go to Rizzo's for dinner , walk downtown , remember the fun the Bednar's had at the Slovak Club and just enjoy that special something that Windber has or is .

I'm Simone, Italian. My gran mother brother came in windber in 1923 from Italy. He grew up a wonderful family and now I have a lot of cousins here. I went in windber in 2005. I'll keep everything in my heart!!Bye

It is my understanding that Johnny Weissmuller lived in Windber as a very young child when his parents migrated from Austro-Hungry at the turn of the century. Weissmuller won five gold medals for swimming in the 1920's. He was also the most well known of the different actors to play Tarzan. It was Johnny who created the Tarzan call of the wild. I'd have to wonder if any Weissmuller family are buried in Windber. Judging from these pictures, if I lived here, I recon I'd be buried here.
