Gun emplacements, Fort Canby, Ilwaco, Washington, 2009

The ruins of Fort Canby go back to the Civil War. However this particular gun emplacement dates to World War II. The fort was built to protect the mouth of the Columbia River from potential invaders. Today its concrete bunkers speak of the passage of time itself.

I found the circular hole fascinating as well. Given the defensive nature of this place, I would think it once functioned as a look out, or a place for a rifle.

It is interesting to me how a simple study in geometry can lead the imagination - I find myself wondering about the circle here - is it a drain - a spy hole - or what?

You know how hard I look for diagonals, Rose. Almost any set of steps, when seen from the side, will give you them. Thanks.

I'm captivated by your diagonal composition with the steps.
