The High Line is an elevated rail line built in the 1930's to redirect freight traffic that previously ran through the industrial district of Manhattan, causing many deadly accidents. Use of the High Line ceased after 1980, and the line fell into disrepair and was under threat of demolition. In 1999, Friends of the High Line was formed and they lobbied for turning the structure into an elevated city park. In June of 2009 the first section which runs between Gansevoort St and 20th Street opened. There are two more sections of the park which are slated to be opened at a later date. Photographer, Joel Sternfeld, photographed the abandoned rail line during all four seasons before it was transformed into a park and published a book filled with these images entitled "Walking the High Line".
You have captured a very interesting project with this gallery Nora, giving a great
overview of what a wonderful amenity this will be for people. I like the variety in
the shots. V
