I find the comparison between this image and the photo your friend Aloha made of this scene (http://www.pbase.com/aloha_lavina/image/77341668 ) to be instructive. The primary difference is the degree of reality you present here and the abstracted symbolic figure Aloha uses. You each tell a different story, yet use similar contexts to do so. Your subject is more visible, as is the space in which she sits. She appears to be meditating, ignoring the mud and water aroun her. Aloha darkens the subject until she (or he) become anonymous and she darkens the room to make the subject appear to be almost imprisoned. Very small differences, yet significant differences in meaning. Both are extreme expressive images, made so by the juxtaposition of light and color and shape.
! I love it...that contrast that makes everything monochromatic except for the splash of colour. It's ethereal. In my opinion, one of your best images, for the thought behind it..K
