Reading

I used to read a lot. All the time. Anything I could get my hands on, I devoured it.
Dickens and other classics, popular fiction, short stories and long novels. It didn't matter. If it was a book and it had any literary merit I'd read it.
The sole of my shoe melted when I sat too close to the fire reading 'War and Peace' and I scarcely noticed.
In recent years, however, I'm doing well if I read a couple of books a year.
There are too many other distractions. Pbase, Facebook, blogs, all sorts of material on-line.
So, one of my New Year resolutions is spend less time on line and more time with the printed page.
'The Life of Pi' has been on my 'must read' list for a long time, especially as we picked up this beautifully illustrated hardback edition
in a remaindered bookshop.
When I saw the trailer for Ang Lee's film adaptation I thought 'I must see that'. And then I thought 'I must read the book first'.
So, now that I'm on holidays, I've started reading it.

I was never an avid reader of stories, but rather more interested in technical manuals, be them for nature, creative, or mechanical things. I have started reading this book too, however! I hope you find more time to do what you love, whatever it may be.

My significant other decided to try to read Les Miserables for the same reason. I have it on my Kindle. She has it in paperback form. Both formats have the same issue (as the translator put it in the foreword, "Hugo spares his readers nothing") but at least I don't get a hernia when I lift my copy.
It's a good shot, evoking the days of yore when one would sit by a fire and read simply because there were no electronic distractions.

I was never all that much of a reader until the last few years. I find it so much more satisfying now. Reading biographies and all just means so much more now.

A worthy resolution. I just hope reading doesn't steal away your photography time!

Good for you. The virtual world does have a way of taking over one's life. And this is a beautifully composed and photographed low light image. I hope you will still be posting your PAD. :) V.

It is very hard to sit still with a book nowadays.
I think I will go straight to the film of this one :-)

ultimately more informative, both relaxing and engrossing, reading does suffer in the face of all the many options..television content is so vacuous it's easy to ignore, yet the internet is a powerful distraction..and then there are the cameras, the guitars, the friends, the home obligations, the errands, the commute, and of course work...Life of Pi has caused a stir, and may be worth considering...currently reading about the history of the calendar, and just picked up Flynn's 'Girl Gone' today...hopefully can find the time...

I would like to read this one too. I also am finding I am not reading as much. Sounds like a good New Year Resoultion! Looks like a wonderful edition of the book.

Good for you! It is so hard to resist the lure of being online, and I think many of us feel that. I still read dozens of books a year, but not anywhere near as many as I would like to, thanks to computer time! V
