I used to read a lot. All the time. Anything I could get my hands on, I devoured it.
Dickens and other classics, popular fiction, short stories and long novels. It didn't matter. If it was a book and it had any literary merit I'd read it.
The sole of my shoe melted when I sat too close to the fire reading 'War and Peace' and I scarcely noticed.
In recent years, however, I'm doing well if I read a couple of books a year.
There are too many other distractions. Pbase, Facebook, blogs, all sorts of material on-line.
So, one of my New Year resolutions is spend less time on line and more time with the printed page.
'The Life of Pi' has been on my 'must read' list for a long time, especially as we picked up this beautifully illustrated hardback edition
in a remaindered bookshop.
When I saw the trailer for Ang Lee's film adaptation I thought 'I must see that'. And then I thought 'I must read the book first'.
So, now that I'm on holidays, I've started reading it.
