On Yer Bike

Ok, that's not what the town council's campaign to get people to cycle and walk to work and school is called but it could be. The council is putting in cycle lanes (in some cases just painted lines on the side of the road) to encourage children to walk and cycle to school. There are also designated car parks where parents can park and then walk the rest of the way to school. It's still early days so it's not clear how successful the campaign will be. Safety is the biggest concern for parents and I can't help but think that our unpredictable climate will be another factor.

Great idea but I do hope the children are safe. Wonderful B&W image.
borisalex28-Nov-2011 15:52
Yes, but it is very environment-conscious!
Maaike Huizer28-Nov-2011 09:49
This is absolutely fabulous. V
Janice Dunn28-Nov-2011 08:49
It's a good idea. But our roads are very hilly around here...

Brilliant shot, love the shadows! V

Good job too - I cycle as often as I can but not nearly enough...super shadowy shot Mairead, I like the high contrasts here with the silhouetted bike against the sun on the road behind

Superb work in B&W.
globalgadabout27-Nov-2011 16:11
rich tones and complex elements in this deeply resonant image...a noble idea to encourage the healthier, greener alternative, but barriers rather than just painted lines would be safer, particularly for young riders..V

Might have been better to start this campaign in the Springtime...

Having spent some time in Bremen , Germany this year I really think the rest of Europe, (Britain included ) can't use our Bikes more.

Fabulous light and shadows in this beautiful composition Mairead...We have cycle lanes everywhere and a few use them in the city but not so many...BV

I have cycled for years through snow, hail and rain storms. Good protectable clothing is a must and protective cycle lanes too.
A wonderful composition of the bike and its shadow

A fine BW with great mood. A good idea, but difficult with children I think. V
Cindi Smith27-Nov-2011 04:53
Wow, love the light and shadow. Excellent image and I do hope it works out okay and that nobody gets run over. We have those here as well.

Clever shadow taken .

Lovely backlight to produce the fine shadows and bring out the details in the pavement. Perfect candidate for B&W. V
J. Scott Coile27-Nov-2011 02:34
Same thing happening over here.
Janet Donnelly27-Nov-2011 02:30
Wonderful in B&W ..... circles and straight lines make for an attractive combination!
Carl Carbone27-Nov-2011 02:09
Wonderful shot with all the lines and geometry. The complexity of the shot parallels that of the potential issues of the campaign. Anything we can do to decrease pollution is a good thing, but safety should always be paramount. V
LynnH27-Nov-2011 01:58
We have many, many children riding bikes to school here, and many adults who ride for exercise too. Sugar Land has a lot of bicycles! This is a great shot with the black & white and the shadows! V

A terrific photo. the tonality is exquisite. Love the graphical composition with the shadows. Hope it all works out for the best. V

Great shot with a critical statement. BV (from a father)

This is full of great lines, shapes and shadows. Very compelling light and composition. I hope the drivers take care. V.

Love the shadow play here Mairead!
As far as bike lanes go ~ the Dutch have done it right. :) The US is tinkering around with it, but....
tinkerb26-Nov-2011 22:28
Great shot well seen - love the shadow and the treatment in B&W. Not convinced painting white lines on exisiting roads is a good idea - all it does is bring motorist closer to you trying to overtake on same side of the road.
John King26-Nov-2011 22:19
Great B&W image. I hope the bicycle lane plan works out well.
Ann...26-Nov-2011 22:17
I love the mood of this shot. Bicycles and feet have a lot of catching up to do..cars still rule I regret to say. We would all be healthier if we moved away from 4 wheels!
laine26-Nov-2011 21:57
Where once it was an option that nobody thought twice about now so many issues can be raised as sad factors...we live in a rural area and 20 years ago kids rode and walked by every day but for a long while now it hasn't happened...I hope it works out for your council Mairead.
Phillip Normanton26-Nov-2011 21:54
LOL yeah - not perhaps the best time of year for it! :o) Fab moody mono though!
Mary Terry26-Nov-2011 21:46
There's a big push for that here as well. Our town has been adding bike lanes to many main roads and promoting a "car free diet".
Great B/W image! V
