Judging a book by its cover

They say that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover and I guess the same
is true about wines. But I couldn't resist this attractive label, especially
when the wine was on half price in an Italian wine sale a few weeks ago.
Unfortunately, I put it aside, almost forgot about it, and then got a
pleasant surprise when I eventually opened it at the weekend. It was
totally delicious, at least in my opinion as I'm no wine buff. I hastened
back into the supermarket yesterday but the Italian wine sale was over
and the non-sale price is above my budget for a Saturday night
in front of the fire. I did, however, pick up an Australia merlot in the
New Worlds wine sale, again because I liked the label.
Will report on it at a future date.

Wine labels should be attractive - wine names can be interesting too.
Recently found a local wine called "Big Men In Tights"!!!

Una bella fotografia. Mi piace molto. La luna è davvero tagliente[1]. Ciao, mate.

([1] I mean "sharp", but am not 100% sure that it's the right word in this context.)

Can't say much on this one, but hope the Aussie Merlot is up to standard :)

Thanks for the recommendation...I'll try to find it at our local wine store.
I must admit, my knowledge is limited as well, and sometimes the label
calls to me too. Always great to find a delicious bargain isn't it! V

We can't deny the power of marketing, you where very lucky to get it at a good price.

As more people seem to be buying wine by the looks of the label I see more and more creative and sometimes very funny labels at the store to catch the eyes of prospective buyers. A far cry from my father's wine cellar where all labels seemed to look the same. A very nice shot by the way.

In general, go by the year, 2001, and 2004. Glad you had a pleasant surprise! V

Yep, I do it too. That's why design is so important! (And I'm not just saying that because I'm a designer!)

I love wine labels and would like to do a gallery of them sometime. Little works of art! Maybe an idea for a challenge... we could drink our way through the month. Love the label and your photo. V

Yup, label shopping is the only way - never buy anything that's not worth a photo :o))

looks as if it could project you onto the 'terrace of the moon', an appealing destination...over here there are many well-priced Italian wines that are delicious...in fact there's a glass of 'Montepulciano d'Abruzzo' (CAN$ 10.- for one litre) here winking at me right now...slainte...V

It is indeed a beautiful label and this is a beautiful photo. Love the diagoal composition, colors and background. Glad it was delicious.

CDs can be chosen this way, too. Success is fleeting. But it keeps us marketing types in business :o)

Very nice looking bottle, good shot of this fine tasting wine. v

I have always been one to purchase wine because of the pretty label. A dear friend in France, a true wine connoisseur, is teaching me about fine wines (finally!). :)
Very pretty capture Mairead!

A nice label and a fair price are my guidelines. Great shot.

Buying wine by the looks of the label must be a universal practice - it's certainly how I pick a gluggable companion for a weekend evening :o))

I think that buying wine on the basis of label design is a pretty sound idea. If a company has no "taste" it already shows. If you are buying cheapish Australian wines, however, try McWilliams Hanwood Estate Cabernet. Label looks okay but the contents are remarkable for the price - the label is in my PaD. Cheers "Hic". Nice pic incidentally.

It's certainly eye catching.

Yep I'd have gone for that label!
