Just One Book......

To mark World Book Day on Saturday, the Irish Times asked some well known writers to
nominate one book which they would give to someone.
Much to my surprise 'To Kill A Mockingbird' was not included. Harper Lee's story of
childhood innocence and wonder told against a backdrop of bigotry, injustice
and prejudice remains a classic half a century after it was written.
The first copy I read was a paperback picked up in a secondhand bookshop
soon after I had finished college. I loved the story of Scout and Jem, the
mysterious Boo, their father Atticus and a trial which showed how
justice is not always served in court.
When this hardback edition came out to celebrate the book's 50th anniversary
I couldn't resist it, even though I am normally happy to read paperbacks.

I like the arrangement of the old items; it would give a sense of a shot from long ago but for the "50th anniversary" button on the book itself, which gives the game away! (Also I don't think that they had D90's back then...)

A terrific still life. I am afraid my Kindle would not substitute for this real book. :)

This has to be one of the best books I have ever read. If you enjoyed To Kill a Mockingbird you might want to try Boy's Life by Robert McCammon. It's another great story. (You have a typo in your story. The little girl's name was Scout, not Scott)

Well, you have inspired me to read it, and it turns out my daugher has a copy and informs me 'its well good'! I despair.. Love the pocket watch.

A classic read...one of my favourites from school, I can still remember staying up late one night to finish it...

rich elements in this fine image...a favourite book is to be treasured...even if the current literary big names quickly forget the great works...some of the best classics constantly remain under the radar..

A wonderful book. Also a great movie. Last I heard Harpee Lee was still alive as well. Nicely arranged composition. V

It is a classic. It is timeless. I'm glad it was chosen! I have read it several times over the decades and it always has the same impact. A marvelous book. And to think that Harper Lee wrote only this one book. I wonder what else she might have written if she'd been so inclined.

I'm surprised that this was one of the books chosen. As a Bibliophile I must tell you that paperbacks will not accrue in value, nor do they last long. I have some sixty year old paperbacks that have faded to an orange brown and are so brittle that they are no longer readable.
