After the foundation of the Irish State in 1921,
all post boxes from the British postal service
were simply painted green, so the crown
and the letters of the British Monarch can
still be seen.
This is a really great picture: I'm sure all modern made Irish Post Boxes will actually be designed with a harp symbol on the front; presumably still painted green with a gold harp!
Yes! I've been drawn to snap a few of these too in the past year. So far I've seen Edwardian and Victorian ones. This one you've captured is in very good condition.
the crown still on the postboxes, yet painted vivid green, is surely a reminder of the struggle for independence..perhaps one day they will sport Boru's harp instead...V
