Have haggis, will travel

21 January 2005

Oh... I very nearly went and done it. I was this >< close to getting it. I had it in my hands and was able to caress its buttons. But I was strong. I have willpower. I held out. Instead, I bought a new memory card. The D70 will just have to wait for another day... but its time is coming... and I have decided that I will be getting the Nikon instead of the 20D. Bit of a roller coaster of a day today. I was asked to give a quote for translating and editing a book. Not wanting to have to do it, since I have a lot on, I hoped to dissuade them by quoting a price that was three times my usual rate. They accepted it! My prices have just gone up! After all, the D70 won't work without lenses! My first port of call when I get my new camera will be the States! - it is decided (although I haven't yet figured out how to tell Linda). So, I'm off on my travels tomorrow with my trusty laptop, S7000 and M603. Steeled, I am, for yet another week in Portugal's national library: between meetings at the uni, that is. Tomorrow is a travel day, and if all goes smoothly I should be at Alcântara by 9.30pm. I will possibly have time to post an image tomorrow, but if not, it will be up on Sunday. Talking of Sunday... since this trip is a short one (no free weekend), I only have one free day, and that will be Sunday. I'm not quite sure where I'm going to go, but don't be surprised if I end up in Sintra. I have not forgotten to pack my haggis, turnips, shortbread and outcakes: the whisky I will get at the airport. So. I'm all set. Tomorrow is a new day, a different country, and sees the return of colour. Tchau e até breve meus amigos!

Haggis is a fabulous dish especialy when cooked in wiskey !
Guest 23-Jan-2005 17:36
A muckle puddin! There was some queue at the local butcher here yesterday for their award winning haggis, but got it in the end. However never did manage to get tickets for the burns night in the town hall, sold out.

Bring on the colour!

Go for it, Stewart - I'msure you'll love the D70 ... and Burns Night won't be complete without a Haggis and a wee dram of Ardbeg :O)

Thumbs up for the D70 - I love mine but the D2X is beginning to call to me in my sleep ! I have a business trip to Arizona next month so I am hoping the dollar remains weak, so that I might be able to pick up some lenses cheap(er) or even a D2X but don't tell my wife... And Burn's Night almost here. We have a delayed supper next Saturday because work the morning after doesn't mix with the wee dram on the night. Enjoy yourself....

Traitor!! a nikonite in canonical clothing....a pox upon thy haggis!!
Lori Rolfe22-Jan-2005 21:37
I'd pass on the haggis, but wouldn't mind some turnips..... Good luck on your trip
Guest 22-Jan-2005 18:24

I had one of those for tea last night, but The vegetarian version. Nuts, oatmeal, kidney beans, and er other stuff (I'm not very hot with the old recipe thing, there). Tasty it was too. They had a stall up letting you taste it, with a drop of single malt. I don't fancy the 'real' one though :-0

That Haggis wont explode under pressure on the plane will it. :>O Would like to hear what has made you think D70 over 20D Stu, like Petesie,I'm taking notes.

Sounds like you are well prepared, but I don't know about the haggis...
petesie22-Jan-2005 03:00
I'm with Gayle...I'm embarrassed to say I had to go to a dictionary and find out what haggis is.....I am not planning on trying it soon. I've been looking at all the different artists on Pbase and what camera they use, and I see a lot that I like with the D70. I even looked it up to learn about it. Can't wait until you get it. Good luck!

Well when you come to the States you know where to find us!!
Ian Clowes21-Jan-2005 23:46
Think we have the beginings of a D70/20D discussion here. Are you allowed to transport wild animals (the haggis) into Portugal? Guess you're recovered, great - what's the book you're translating?
Guest 21-Jan-2005 23:22
mmmm, yumyum!!! MacSweens as well!!!
Herb 21-Jan-2005 23:20
A nikon????
Gavin21-Jan-2005 23:18
Nice Stu. Have a safe journey, we will have to get together when you get home. Glad you have decided on the d70, it is a wonderful camera. Now how long will you be able to hold out...Anyways take care.
Robin Reid21-Jan-2005 23:15
Gail is correct. The exchange rate would really help if you came here to buy your D70. And I'm curious, what made you pick the D70 of the 20D? Not 'ragging' here...just curious.

Sintra... one of my favorite places. Take some shots. Have a good trip.
Adalberto Tiburzi21-Jan-2005 23:15
SINTRA in winter!!! Yummy, as someone says...
Guest 21-Jan-2005 23:15
Never tried haggis... looking forward to the return of RGB. Would also be interested in what made you prefer the D70 over the 20D. No desire to influence your decision, just interested!
Guest 21-Jan-2005 23:12
Enjoy the trip Stu, safe journey :) Hope you're gonna still take some B&W pics!
Gail Davison21-Jan-2005 23:00
Great photo. You should make 'the States' your first port of call BEFORE you buy your camera. Much cheaper there! [
