This close-up of an uncommon Philippine endemic is probably among the first times the photo of the female is taken in the wild. It was captured in my first birding foray in the Cordillera Highlands . I'd have prefered a simpler perch and friendlier direction of light, but I take the blessings as they come when birding in montane forests. Sharp where it matters, this bird gets my vote with its soulful eye, simple beauty, amazing colors and of course rarity.
