13th November 2004 - ARSE

Yeah yeah I know – being a Spurs fan you have to take it on the chin quite a lot. Today we put four past the ARSE but they still went and won didn’t they? Whoever would have thought it?

I have no voice left (nor does Sarah) and David got to experience the electrifying atmosphere that is the local derby between these two clubs for the very first time. He didn’t quite know what to expect…..and he still doesn’t quite know what happened at the Lane today and to be honest neither do I. He’s pictured here on the train on the way into London and when I’d taken the photo the guy opposite us said he wanted to get a digital camera because he’d only got optical cameras….how strange is that?

This is the biggest fixture of our league calendar and this is the first time for a few years we’ve lost it. Last time the Gooners put five past us I was there (Boxing Day 1978 or 9 I think) and a hopeless back pass by John Pratt from the half-way line saw Liam Brady nip round him, pick up the ball and score the first of five. At least today we had some sort of reply.

Many years later, a lovely lady called Louise came to work with me (she’s still working with me now). When she discovered I was a Spurs fan she said (in all innocence) ‘my brother in law used to play for Spurs’. I don’t know why but I had to ask the question….’don’t tell me, your brother in law is John Pratt isn’t he?’ Yes, she said, how did you know? I responded by saying ‘next time you see him, ask him about Boxing Day’ – she did and he groaned ‘why does everyone always remind me of that day?’. Er ……well……let me guess?

Today we played well on the whole, we never gave up and we fought to the bitter end. We still lost though.

Mind you, having seen Match of the Day, our defending was woeful really - still, theirs was too!!!

You guys take this stuff a bit seriously -- can't be good for your digestion. Twenty-five year grudges, hmmm. BTW, I have it on good authority that your photo is not of an arse.

Hope you survive the setback -- just don't hold on to it for another twenty-five years. :)

Just heard the result from you Linda. Was totally unaware, and I think to lose 5-4 to the Gunners is pretty resepctable, even if its still losing to the 'enemy'. And yeah, I guess that what they are in my eyes too.....
