I have had THE most frustrating day today. I am a do-er, not a spectator and this weekend was supposed to give me the opportunity to do something with this garden, having spent most of the last few weekends away. Last weekend the weather was so filthy, I couldn’t do the stuff I wanted to so when today dawned bright and sunny I was delighted to be able to go out and ‘get on with stuff’.
I spent half an hour photographing frost then set to trying to make some progress towards getting a tidy garden back. I have been frustrated by finding that all my useful tools are in Cornwall, those that are here are mainly crappy old blunt things. I’ve persevered and got loads of stuff cut back then tried to get DM to shred it all so it can go on the compost heap only to find we have had no electricity – the second power cut in three days. It’s stuffed up all the appliances and prevented me from being able to get my jobs done. No lawnmower, no power tools, no washing machine, no PC, no nothing. It just goes to show how much we rely on the leccy.
The power has been off almost all day with a couple of ten minute bursts just to frustrate us more and risk our PCs and other equipment. It finally came on for good (hopefully) when there was just over an hour of daylight left. We hurried back outside, set the shredder going and mowed the lawn - hurrah!
A few years ago we had no power for six days, just after Christmas – there had been a lightening strike on the local electricity supply place (whatever they’re called) and we were left powerless, along with a square mile or so of our neighbours. Our house ran entirely on leccy at the time and so we were completely stuck – even though we had gas central heating and hot water, the whole lot relied on electric pumps. It was horrible. A couple of times during those six days we decamped to some friends, had baths and a hot meal but it was very depressing coming home and finding it was –7º and our house was in pitch darkness with no heat.
I made up my mind then to make sure we were not so dependent on a single source of energy in the future and since then we’ve got our fireplace opened up for warmth, a gas hob so we can have hot food and we always have loads of candles around. Today we needed the hob and we’ll be lighting the fire here for the first time tonight.
While I was ambling about in the garden looking for jobs to do that could be done by hand. I spotted the low sun making this moon gazing hare glint and glow. I love the way that over the years it has gained that beautiful patina. It’s always been one of my favourite things – I have a fixation with rabbits but I have only ever seen a single hare in the wild. It was running along the road in front of my car early one morning when I was going to meet my parents after their coast-to-coast walk.
I decided that it would have to be my photo today because it’s associated with good fortune, sexuality, abundance, lust, renewal and rampant growth. Despite having had a frustrating weekend of missed opportunities and irritating problems, I still feel like a hugely lucky person. Perhaps this hare holds the key to why……
The hare has featured in my PotD before - but that time it was really only to act as my foil for the moon.
