Singapore

Singapore dates back to the 14th century when the island was part of the Sri Vijayan Empire and called Temasek, meaning "sea town". The name Singapore comes from the Malay word "Singapura" or "lion city". In 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles established the city as a trading post for the British Empire. Singapore achieved independence as a republic in 1965.
