In February 2010 the Thai Supreme Court voted to confiscate 46.37 billion baht of the 76.6 billion in frozen assets belonging to the Shinawatra family on the grounds of corruption. Thaksin, already on the run from a two-year prison sentence for corruption, threatened to seek revenge. Soon enough a protest rally began, organized by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD). They demanded a dissolution of Parliament and called for new elections. Ultimately, Prime Minister Abhisit agreed to the their demands, but the UDD, or Red Shirts, made further demands. Which were met. Then more demands as Thaksin, still on the run, instructed the leadership of the UDD not to accept the prime minister's offer, at which point the protest turned into open rebellion, the Red Shirts seeking to overthrow the government by force. On May 18, to the surprise of no one, it was confirmed that Thaksin Shinawatra was a major source of funding for the rebellion. These are a few photos I took when I dared to go into the war zone.
Terrific shots John, I must have missed you on Convent Rd. by minutes :-)). I guess after having 3 of their governments 'evicted' by the conservative elites they are a tad upset. Lets hope some common sense prevails.
