This is the largest petroglyph site in the northwest tropical Pacific islands.

There are also petroglyphs on the nearby boulders of metamorphic rock. The petroglyphs on the boulders are different from the ones on the large outcropping. On one large boulder, as plant matter was removed, more petroglyphs were revealed that our local guide had not seen before.

There are three mortars at the large metamorphic outcropping site. I have not seen these mentioned in any literature and these may have been overlooked. Once I scooped the water out of the depressions the area of worked stone was obvious.

Hi, I was able to locate Paul Rainbird and Meredith Wilson´s report (Pohnpaid Petroglyphs, Pohnpei: a report to the Federated States of Micronesia National Historic Preservation Office and the Pohnpei State
Historic Preservation Office, 1999) where he identified the actually 4 holes ("mortars") as foundation postholes for a specialised house that would have been located on the promonitory. Rainbird and Wilson did a survey of the entire area in 1998. Also, enveloped crosses are found all over the Melanesian arc (parts of PNG, the Bismarcks, the Solomons, Vanuatu, parts of PNG. I would look into the relationship between these motifs and related area peoples before drawing connections to outside areas. There is a great book on this subject, written by Jean Monnin and Chrostophe Sand (in French) that you may download. Google it at the iancp.nc website. Fascinating subject!
