July 28 2004:
Ladies Wot Latte

I’m really quite insecure about taking candids in my own town. Probably because I’m afraid someone I know will see me and think I’m a bit soft in the head. Also because you don’t see many cameras in my town on a Wednesday afternoon and so I hardly melt into the background.

I know the purists will say that this photo goes against the rules. Two friends are chatting but are divided by a huge pillar behind them, and another is just having a conversation with your right hand! But I do like the afternoon light here – there is something special about the light under glass canopies.

Photoshop:
Cropped and Resized
Duotone #FAFBC1
Framed using #E9E9D5

Canon EOS 300D Digital Rebel
1/320s f/6.3 at 90.0mm iso400 full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

This is fine. What would have spoiled it would have been if the right chair had been empty.

Love the b&w, love the candid & especially love latte ! Know what you mean about toting the camera in a small town...also reluctant to snap people incase they snap back...grrrr !!

I read this photo as a metaphor of incommunicability among persons.
In this sense, the "Old Economy" pillar is fundamental.
And the Fast Internet Access is the problematical, uncertain, floating escape.
(I have had a discussion with Robin Statfeld, and we obviously agree...)

It's fine Ray - not much you can do about the pillar anyway! Sure the eye is drawn to it but it doesn't dominate? Actually the sign above the left hand lady ... if I send the cash could you get me bagful?? Do we ever need that up here!! Promised for next April if you can believe a word BT says??

I agree with Mike, funk da rules... The thing that drew me in was the thumbnail.. now it's not easy with a monochrome but.. the hue and tones are excellent and the "idea" of what is happening is as well. That man kicked back in his chair... it looks so nice, makes me want to sit down and talk to them as well.
And that's what this is all about.. getting people INTO our photos.. and thinking.

Ray, excellent. Forget the so-called 'rules', the pillar is fine. The person on the right makes the viewer think about who she is talking to. The interest in this kind of picture is in the people, the faces. Nice one.
