Asian lady beetle (Harmonia axyridis)

Lanark Highlands

THere were a few more of these lady beetles nearby, on one warm early spring day. A non-native species brought over to control aphids. They have since spread widely, but they certainly do focus in on aphids! This is a very variable species, some have only a few spots, others have many, some have none, and colour can range from this bright orange to almost red. If you wish to see more, this gallery has a small number of photos of this species.

Nice trio of lady beetles Christine. The pair of bumps on the hind of the bottom beetle is interesting.

Very colorful and they look somewhat similar to our ladybugs. I looked them up and see that they are from the same family. V

We have mostly Asian lady bugs nowadays. They are voracious eaters... and I'm always happy to see them in my garden. V

Beautiful detail and lovely highlights. V

Great closeup with lovely color. I always thought ladybugs were much redder than these (although I realize these are Asian). V.

they are nice but not so innocent, they can cause much damage to the indigenous species.
Great image Christine BV
