Asian lady beetles (Harmonia axyridis)

Reveler Conservation Area

The Asian ladybeetle is extremely varied in appearance. These four are all the same species but range from no spots to a few to many. Fortuitously, these ones congregated under the moth lights one night and formed this little 'social bubble', each one different!

While some people dislike them because they come into houses, this species was deliberately imported to control aphid infestations which they do quite well. I have seen adults and larvae munching effectively through aphid populations. They used to be sold in garden centres (perhaps still are) as a non-chemical control of aphids.

Fascinating. I've always wondered by they have different numbers of spots.

they look like sweet confections, but apparently that is deceiving...fine shot, and an informative link by Isabel Cutler.

I had a bunch of them get into our house a week ago. The cats went crazy. I tried to rescue, but only managed to catch 3 without hurting them. There were 6 altogether. I like how the spots range in opacity from one bug to another. V
