Hialeah Speedway, Hialeah, Florida

Thank you to Warren Davis for sending this Google Earth image. All that grass area has been paved over with asphalt like most of South Florida. You have to wonder about all the rain water now going into storm drainage pipes instead of into the earth if we aren't screwing things up? That's a Target store on the left and a Lowe's (my favorite home improvement store in South Florida) on the right. Every time I park at Lowe's and walk towards the store entrance I think of the great old race track that was there for decades and all the good times that many people had there.

John, I think that is an excellent idea. Unfortunately, this area is pathetic when it comes to historical markers. When Miami's major airport at one time "disappears" and is eventually replaced by the Hialeah Police Department headquarters and a giant UPS sorting facility and there is no marker for that, I doubt if anyone will put one up for Hialeah Speedway. But there are enough car and car racing fans out there that could make it happen if they get organized.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a marker noting "The location of Hialeah Speedway" and an actual 'Finish Line' painted on the new pavement? Juat a thought...
