Defiance

It was quite a media event as the Ku Klux Klan showed in support of a city's fight to keep religious symbols on government property. A special city council meeting was called; the attendance of a well-known atheist only added fuel to the fire. This photograph won several contests that year.

What a great capture. The irony is, well, fitting.

Incredible shot, congratulations. Each KKK guy looking farther away from the powerfully calm policeman, until the guy on the left can't bear to look at all. Maybe he has figured it out? One wonders what the guys on the wall are thinking.

Fabulous photo. My favorite detail is the KKK guy second from the right, just glaring. Easy to see why this pic won contests.

Luko G.-R.07-Jun-2010 13:40
Love it, they look like stupid little boys on carnival being sermoned by a sensible policeman. V

This is really professional!
Guest 18-May-2010 17:16
I guess these guys are just too stupid to know how ridiculous they look. The cop is obviously the only sane one. Great capture!

What a capture, unbeleivable how that KKK seems to listen religiously to that black policeman... no torch or rope in his hands. :) I never knew KKK where a religious sect!

The word is Karma. there idles are very much alive today in every walk of life. V
Guest 27-Mar-2009 15:34
This picture just made me laugh... A lot. It makes the KKK guys look so pathetic. Genius.
Ken McColl16-Mar-2009 23:39
What is so brilliant in this shot is your anticipation Marcia. The moving 'off stage' of the guy left..adds a sense of urgency..but..the big black cop..laying down the law to these guys, the look of chastisement on the KKK man's face, all give meaning where the sum is greater than the parts. I am so glad to have found your galleries.

If you are going to juxtapose two elements in an image for maximum contrast - this one has to be up amongst the strongest - the film-makers do it - but here the photographer has captured it for real......somehow the size of the cop and his matter of fact-ness lends a sense of the pathetic to the guys in (not so) fancy dress.
Kim05-Mar-2009 00:59
