Something has caught the heron’s attention. Maybe it’s all the gawkers coming to see him now that he’s a celebrity, thanks to The Washington Post (not).
Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

We stopped by the lake on the National Mall again to see if the heron had flown south. Much to our surprise, he was still there, along with quite a few cormorants, despite the bitterly cold weather we’ve had over the past week, although it was almost 70 degrees on that particular day (!).
