The Guimet Museum (French: Musée national des Arts asiatiques-Guimet or Musée Guimet) is a museum of Asian art located at 6, place d'Iéna in Paris. It has one of the largest collections of Asian art outside Asia. The museum was founded by Émile Étienne Guimet, an industrialist. Devoted to travel, Guimet was in 1876 commissioned by the minister of public instruction to study the religions of the Far East, and the museum contains many of the fruits of this expedition, including a fine collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain. Het Musée national des Arts asiatiques-Guimet, kortweg Musée Guimet, is een Frans museum voor Aziatische kunst. Het is gevestigd in Parijs.Het museum werd opgericht op initiatief van Émile Guimet (1836-1918), een industrieel en geleerde uit Lyon. Dankzij zijn reizen naar Egypte en Griekenland en een wereldreis in 1876 waarbij hij Japan, China en India aandeed, slaagde hij er in een indrukwekkende collectie exotische kunst op te bouwen, die hij vanaf 1879 in Lyon tentoonstelde. Vervolgens specialiseerde hij zich in Aziatische kunstvoorwerpen, en verhuisde hij zijn collectie naar het museum dat hij in Parijs had laten bouwen aan het Place d'Iéna. Het museum werd geopend in 1889. Mede dankzij enkele particuliere legaten bezit het de grootste collectie van Aziatische kunst buiten Azië. (Bron : Wikipedia)
