1974 I worked at a local Hialeah company called Creative Wax. We made waxed / bark flower pots, hardened with melted plastics. We got paid in cash. Sometime later I left, moving out of state. The summer of 1976 had me visiting the old town and where I once worked. As I was headed up the driveway, an I.R.S. man was alongside me. We soon found out the business was no longer there. On top of that the boss never paid taxes, nor gave the I.R.S. what they took out of my pay. I knew that the investor owned several car washes in the area, of which I told the Tax Man. Other than that I use to pick Star Apples of a nearby tree. Now I see then in stores for nearly two bucks ...

Hello, I am interested in pictures of the old Hialeah. Anyone remember the Arby's that was on 49th street? It became this chicken joint called El Pollo Supremo. I am just curious if anybody has any pictures of that location when it was open, they closed sometime in 04-05, they tore it down in 07, became yet another chicken joint in 09, now it's an urgent care center.

And a request for information from Jim Ingalls. He says: "Hi, My dad ran or owned a bar in the sixties called Peronies or Perony's bar in Hialeah and I do have a couple pictures from inside the bar I'm going to dig up. I was wondering if you have anything on this bar? I don't know the exact address. I was between 5 and 10 years old at the time." If anyone remembers Peronies or Perony's Bar in HIaleah please let us know about it, especially if you remember the location and other tidbits. Thanks! Don .

Hello, I was looking for any information on Winifred Mae Meyer and her husband William J. Meyer. Winifred worked at the Biscayne Hotel , died in 1953 and William Meyer was a custodian at Hialeah Elementary School and Hialeah Junior High School. Winifred had a daughter Katie Ross who went to Miami Jackson School and graduated in 1949 and son Joseph Ross who joined the army in about 1947. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I know it was there in 1963. My uncle was Douglas Wayne Carroll, he worked for them. He was 20 years old and went missing. He was last seen around January of 1963 and never picked up his last check from this company. I recently had a PI do a check on him and his social security number has nothing at all on it after 1963...Like he just vanished. I know it is a long shot but I am hoping to find someone that knew him or maybe worked with him. Carey Gigi, I Forgot to mention to You: Manocarz, had A Real Bad Car Accident , A while back, and He and His Wife: were almost Killed, But they are now Recuperating. I Had No idea of that , until He told Me recently, on Don Boyd's Carl F. Slade Funeral Home Site . If You go to The Memories Of Old Hialeah Site, and Scroll down to where you see The Color Picture Of Carl F. Slade's Funeral Home, and Click on The Picture: You can See what Manocarz and I wrote there. He had been absent from Don Boyd's Sites for Quite some time, before He Showed up on The Slade's Site. I thought He was Mad about something, or just Didn't wanna Post anymore, But Apparently: He Got Hurt Real Bad in That Car Accident, and Couldn't. My Mistake. I've Made A Few in My Life. My Wife you met Patti, and I are 99 % Divorced. She wanted out of The Marriage A Few Months ago, and was Not Staying Home Much, and I Talked to Her Seriously, to No Avail. I wasted My Breath, So I Filed For Divorce with My Dadeland Attorney. In one Month , or so: We Will Be Divorced Completely. I am Staying in My Families House, and She Moved out around 4 Months ago, after I Kept Telling Her to Do So. She's Renting A Room in Someone's House, about 1 Mile From Me. I Thought She Had Another Man, But it Turns out that She Left Me For A Woman: Her Boss, at The Publix Deli. I Still Can't Believe it, And I am not Happy about it, But Good Riddence, and Life Will Go on For Me. I Went Friday to Court for The Divorce Mediation, So Now A Judge needs to Review The Case, and Sign , and Stamp The Papers, and then We are Legally Divorced. After 30 Years Of Marriage. It Really Hurts. All The Best To You, My Friend !!!!!!! I Hope You Like Living Up there. Robbin.

Guest Debi Curren, I Remember MR. Akins !!!!! I was not in His Class, though : I was in MRS. Keller's 6th Grade Class. MRS. Keller , was The Teacher with only one Arm. I was in 6th Grade at Hialeah Elementary: in 1962 , I Believe. Because I was in 7th Grade at Miami Springs JR. High from Sept. of 1963 Till January of 1964. I Went to Hialeah Elementary All 6 Years of Elementary School. I Lived at 1000 East 6th Lane, from Feb. of 1951 till January of 1964 . My Family Moved to Northwest Hialeah, in January of 1964, and I Transferred in to Palm Springs JR. High then. I Still Live in Northwest Hialeah, near HML. Best Regards !!!!!! Robbin Learned.

I also noticed on Classmates that someone posted a picture of Mr Patil's 4th grade class...I was in that picture....still remember so many of those faces! I lived on NE 6th Avenue and 1st Place. I think it was 1967, when I was in 10th Grade , at Hialeah High, and I went one night to A Dance at Hialeah High, and they had it in The Patio, that was outside of The School Cafeteria, and Music: was Provided by Sounds Unlimited, with Paul Rose playing Lead Guitar. They were Real Good !!!!!! I Remember them doing I'll Be There, By The Four Tops, and They Did it Real Good. That Musta Been either Before or after Paul Rose was in The Drones. ???? In and around 1967 - 1969 : I Had A Fender Mustang Guitar, A Univox Guitar, and A Vox Jaguar Portable Organ, and Friends and I : Practiced , and Played in My Parents Garage, and at others' Houses, ect. , But We Never Played anywhere else. We sounded Pretty Good, But Not Good enough for The World, The Place, The Armory, Municipal Auditorium, Ect. We Played Birdwatchers, Animals, Beatles , Stones, Vanilla Fudge, Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd, ect. songs. We Had A Lotta Fun !!!!!! I Played Rhythm Guitar, and Mostly only Chords on The Organ . I Taught Myself to Play Chords , and Bar Chords, From Beatle Books, Fake Song Books, ect. And then I Played The Chords on My Vox Jaguar Organ. I Had A Sears Silvertone 2 12" Speakers Piggyback Amp. Hi Robbin, Paul Rose was the original lead guitarist of the Drones, then we had Ray Hurst; I'm amazed you remember our yellow van, we took it all the way to Maryland ,the D>C. and New York, I remember the 7 of us "come on up" they were great, we never had a guy named cookie, the original bas player was Orlando Sarol, who was replaced by Barry Zander, he kinda look like Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees, we're still in touch, Brim has a Cuban restaurant in Tenn. and still plays in local clubs, sorry the other names I don't remember, regards, Pepe Gomez

Pepe Gomez, Wasn't one of The Tiger Brothers in The 7 Of Us ????? I Remember one of them , either Lee Tiger, or Steve Tiger : Played Lead Guitar Left Handed at The World, in The 7 Of Us. The 7 Of Us: was A Real Good Sounding Band, I Thought. I Remember them Doing : Come On Up, By The Rascals, and Respect , By Aretha Franklin, at The World, in around 1967. Remember That Big Black Cadillac Hearse that DR. T. & The Undertakers had ?????? They played at The World A lot. And I Remember seeing An Orange Corvair Van Riding around West Hialeah with The Drones Painted in Big Black Letters on Both Sides. Terry Weiss, was Playing in A Club, in FT. Lauderdale, on Galt Ocean Mile, A Few Years Ago, But I don't know about now. ????? Remember Dennis Sanders of Miami Lakes ????? He was A Pretty Good Lead Guitarist !!!!!! And Pete Booth , also of Miami Lakes, with His Hofner Beatle Bass ?????? Was there A Guy in The Drones named Cookie ?????? I Thought there was . ????? Paul Rose, had A Good Band: Sounds Unlimited !!!!!! Remember Harry Jones, The Organ Player, with His Farfisa Portable Organ ????? He was A Pretty Good Organ Player too. Thank you Robbin, no, we never had an organist with the Drones, I do remember a lot of these groups because we played with them, a couple of guys from the 7 of Us went on to form NRBQ in 1967 (they are still around , yes Brim Leal was /is a great singer and composer I always thought he would make it big, Terry Weiss joined forces with Mike Pinera of the Blues Image , I believe they got the name from The Image in Miami Beach where Mike ran the place or something, anyway is nice hearing from you, best regards, Pepe Gomez

I Remember What A Great Lead Vocalist Brim Leal was too. He stuttered when He talked, But He Sang Terrific, with No stuttering. I went to Municipal Auditorium Dances, and Battle Of The Bands, To The Place and The World, To The North Miami Armory, and To The Dinner Key Auditorium, to Battle Of The Bands there. There were A lot of Great Bands around Miami - FT. Lauderdale back then, in The 60's. Besides The Drones: DR. T & The Undertakers, The Shaggs, Beaver Patrol, Echo, The Spellbinders, The World Of Matter, The Warlocks, The 7 Of Us, The Kollektion, Toonerville Trolley, and lots of others. Hi Steve, I am sure we ran into each other, we (The Drones) left circa 65-6 to Washington D.C. where we played for 6 months at the American Palace near the White House the we got a contract in New York where we stayed for a few years, but the memories of Hialeah and then Woodstock are still with me everyday, will someone please open the first Royal Castle in California!!!!, Merry Christmas

Pepe, I just remembered something special. You mentioned Municipal Auditorium in your comments, I remember playing there one night for a WQAM dance and our entire band wore pajamas, we even renamed ourselves the Bedbugs for the one night only. The cat calls and whistles we got on the way through the crowd to the stage were fantastic. Johnny Rebb was with us at the time, promoting his newest single, we couldn't get him in pjs though. Steve

Robbin, what a great memory you have, my name is Pepe Gomez and I was one the founder of the group The Drones, with Brim Leal, Paul Rose and Orlando Sarol, then Ray Hurst and Barry Zander joined us I remember playing at Municipal Auditorium, the Place, Happenings, The World, North Miami Armory etc, I also attended Hialeah High and remember Mrs Luster (english) and mr, Goldman (biology) we left in 1966 for NYC and never looked back, formed a group "Chango" and recorded 5 albums, I now live in Los Angeles and haven't been back to Hialeah ever since but have fond memories and read all the posts and brought back memories, I don's think I want to see the "new Hialeah" because I know that it is not better than the one ingrained in my head, I am still in touch with the old members and only Ray Hurst lives in Miami, I do miss White Castle and if they ever open one here I will eat there for 6 months,I remember the old bands, The Invaders, Shaggs,Wayne Cochran, the 7 of us and Steve Alaimo, regards and a salute to all the old hialeans, Pepe Gomez

Please don't forget the ever popular Jack Perry's Sidewalk Cafe, it was located on west 17th Street and Okeechobee Road. Back in the mid sixties I would go there every weekend (Friday and Saturday nights, sometimes Sunday) to hear the group known as the "Famous Mop Tops". I drove up from the Homestead Air Force Base, where I was stationed. It was a long ride but it was worth it, good time, good people, good music and good food. I'd make that drive two or three times every weekend.

Does Anyone Remember : A Big Billboard Sign, that was On East 9th Street, at one time, in The Late 50's ???? It was between Hialeah Lanes, and Burger King. My friends , and I : used to Climb up on it, and Go inside , between The 2 Signn Panels, and We Sat Carefully: on The Girder Beams, which were Pretty narrow. We Were taking an Awful Chance , of Falling, about 20 Feet , or More, to The Ground. But we were Elementary School Kids, and We thought it was neat to go up there. It was Sort of A Tree House, or Secret Hiding Place. That sign, was around where The Pony Rides once were.

Jay Stewart, Did You ever Skate at Rustic Roller Rink ???? I Did, A lot, especially: from around 1959 to 1962. I lived then, by Hialeah Lanes Bowling Alley, at 1000 East 6th Lane. You could See Hialeah Lanes from My House, and The Go Kart Rides , Karland : was just down the Street. I Rode the Go Karts , All The time, was at Hialeah Lanes A Lot, and Burger King, The Candy Store, Royal Castle, Saunder's Hobby Shop, Flamingo Plaza, Grable's Bakery, Children's World, A & W , Big Ed's BBQ, Hitching Post BBQ, The 9th Street Pony Rides, Royal Castle Comissary, Food Fair, Rexall Drugstore, Babcock Park, Hialeah Roller Rink, The Essex Theatre, The Circle Theatre, Miami Springs Recreation Center's Pool on Their High Diving Board, Hialeah Speedway, and Riding My Bictcles all around Sun Tan Village Chasing Girls. I went to Faith Lutheran Church's Kindergarten, in 1956, and then I went to Hialeah Elementary School, for 6 Years. Then I went the First Half , of 7th Grade, at Miami Springs JR. High, until January, of 1964, and then My Family moved to Northwest Hialeah, less than 1 Mile south of Miami Lakes. I Transferred into Palm Springs JR. High, and Finished JR. High there, and then went to Hialeah High School. Living where You did : I'm guessing : that You either went to : South Hialeah Elementary School, or ST. John's School . Your name, doesn't ring A bell, so I'm sure You didn't go to Hialeah Elementary School, and if You Did: then I didn't know you. My Family Doctor, was DR. Link . Remember : The Winn Dixie Warehouse Complex, which was not very far from Your Address ????? You could Smell Fresh Bread Baking , when You went by there. I Did , on My Bike , all the time. Remember : Met Wholesale Club ???? It was on Hialeah Drive, and it was Ahead Of it's time. It was A Lot Like Costco, B. J. 's, and Sam's Club , that are around now. Did you ever know Carey Gigi ???? I went to THe Hialeah Church Of The Nazarene, near South Hialeah Elementary School, for A Few Years , as A Kid. I used to Ride My Bikes: all over the place back then. I Rode my bike, all the way To Grapeland Heights Park, to Sit in The Old Airplane there, and eat My Lunch, from My Lunch Box. And I rode North, as far as East 49th Street, and Lejeune Road. And I Rode on My Bike, to Hialeah Roller Rink, on West 29th Street, just west of Red Road, across the street, from Filer JR. High. I Got Around, and Rode very Dangerously. Luckily : I never Got Hit By A Car, But I Fell off My Bike A Lot, and got Scrapes ( Road Rash ) . Remember Pee Wee Fruit Drinks, in The Little Bottles ???? I Loved those !!!!!! I had some Great Times, Back Then !!!!!!! I still live in Hialeah, near HML . Hopefully : You will see this, and Reply. ??? I passed by The VFW, on East 32nd Street recently, and Sadly: it's Closed , and Vacated. I think it closed : at Least A Couple Of Years ago, or More. As I passed By there: I Remembered all the Good Times I had there on Friday Nights. A Sign Of The Times !!!! Very Disturbing , to Me. No VFW ?????? What A Bummer !! Very Unpatriotic.

In 1962, I believe it was : There were Friday Night Dances, for Teens, and Almost Teens, at The VFW Post on East 32nd Street, just west of East 4th Avenue, and Admission : was Free. And there was A Record Player there, and lots of 45 RPM Records to play , and Tables and Chairs, and Free Freshly Made Delicious Hamburgers, Freshly Made Tuna Fish Sandwiches, and Small Bottles Of Coca Cola, Cups, and Ice. You could go there, Dance, Listen to the Music, Sit and Talk, Make New friends, from different Schools, and Eat. I was one of the Regulars there, and I Loved it there !!!!! Everyone, that went: always had A Good Time, and I Appreciated The VFW, for giving us Kids A nice Place to Go on Friday Nights. It was neat , I thought : to Meet Kids from Different Schools, and to Compare our Schools, ect. And As A Guy : I Liked meeting Girls there, from different Schools. I Lived Sorta Far from The VFW, and The Dances were over at around 10:30 P. M. , as I remember, and I was only 11 Years Old : so My Mom : would pick me up at 10:30 P. M. there. I Lived in Sun Tan Village, by the Hialeah Lanes Bowling Alley. This is A Favorite Hialeah Memory of Mine. Did anyone else go to those Dances, that's Reading this ??? If so: please write about Your Experiences there. Also : The Moose Lodge, next door, to The VFW ; had Teen Talent Show Contests, and A Free Buffet. Admission : was only 35 Cents. That was I think on Saturday Nights, and it was A Nice Place to Go. I know , because I also went there. Robbin.

Anyone Remember : When Hialeah Speedway: had A Lake in The Middle of The Track ????? And How Delicious: The Pizza by The Slice, was At The Hialeah Speedway Concession Stand ???? And How good : The Bread, and Donuts, were at Marciano's Bakery ????? And How Delicious: The Pan Con Bistec - Steak Sandwiches, were at Bisteclandia, across from Hialeah High School , in The 70's ????? And How Good The Pizza, and Hot Dogs Steamed in Beer , were at Mae & Dave's, in The 50's ????? And How Good The BBQ was at The Hitching Post, in The 50's, The 60's , The 70's, and up until around 1984 ????? And Did anyone ever go to Big Ed's BBQ, in The 50's, and up until around 1963 ???? And Lum's, in Hialeah, and Elsewhere: was Great too !!!!! I have been in Hialeah, since My Birth, in 1951, and I Really Miss The Old Hialeah, and it's good places, that are Long Gone Now. Anyone Else: Feel The Same Way ????? The New Present Hialeah Stinks, in My Opinion.

Murphy's, Rustic Roller Rink, Figaro's, Zayre's, Palm Springs Theatre, Karland Go Kart Rides, Grable's Bakery, Gilliamo's Pizza, Beechmont Delicatessen, Jano's Sandwich Shop, Arnold Palmer's Putt - Putt Golf, Royal Castle, My Schooldays, at Palm Springs JR. High, Hialeah High Sockhops, after Football Games, Battle Of The Bands, at Municipal Auditorium ( Milander Auditorium ), The Old Essex Theatre, Carole's Restaurant, Flamingo Cafeteria, Lionel Playworld, Viajante Segundo Restaurant, Arby's Roast Beef Sandwich, The way it was on West 49th Street, when they 1st opened, Lum's, ST. All of these, were around, in The Old Hialeah. The New Hialeah, has none of these. All We have now, are: Overcrowding, Horrible Traffic, and Shopping Centers, and other Businesses. I remember Palm Springs Jr High Schools in late 70's early 80's. Square dancing @ PE and waiting for the world to end(I think that was 80-81). Lawns were perfectly done in Hialeah and streets were clean in the 70's. Nothing beyond the Palmetto on 68th St. I remember Zayre and Treasury on W 49th St. I remember buying records (LPs and 45's w/ my best friend. I remember my father dropping us off at Westland Mall and window shopping all day. I remember going bowling and going to the movies. Going to the Utotem to buy Tiget Beat Magazines and buying ice cream from the ice scream truck. I Remember my father buying my first boom box at an amazing cost of $200 . I remember he was making $3.00 an hour. Didn't realize then what a huge sacrifice it was for him to buy me that. I remember going to Hialeah Miami Lakes High School and the riots in Liberty City.

I lived at 231 E 50th St from 1952(?)-1966. I remember the Ice Cream man on his bike with the freezer in front. Varner's store on E 4th Ave and E 50th St. He carried a balance for us because we were so poor. My Dad paid it off when he got a job at EAL. I went to Hialeah Elem, Miami Sprgs Elem, Hialeah Jr High, and Miami Sprgs Jr High. I lived with my grandmother in Miami Sprs sometimes on Corydon Dr in Miami Sprgs. I was second runner up Junior Miss Miami Sprgs. I also went to the dances at Municipal Auditorium and swam at the pool. We walked there. My brothers are Randy and Casey Smith. My parents meant at Rustic Roller Rink. My brother got his first hair cut at the barber on E 4th Ave between 49th St and 50th St. It made the front page of the news. His hair was so curly and long. A shoe shine man was always in front of the barber's too. We went to summer activities for kids at Hialeah High. We use to climb on the roof when the school was closed. Dad would take us to the dump to look for good stuff. My brother still does it. Played in mud puddles (skim boarding) and got ring worms every time, but didn't care. Thank you for this site. It means so much to me. Brings back memories forgotten.

HI.DON very good website i am also another hialeah man i often come in your site just to remember when back in hialeah you could sleep with your windows open or go to royal castle at any hour of the night or go to hialeah speedway on a friday night or mae and daves pizza on palm and 13th across from the circle K motel its really nice to come to your site and read what other hialeah folks write here i went to henry h filer jr high now its middle school i had alot of friends does anybody remember a guy named red he had a blue mustang he was from palm and west 17th wow i could now taste also th pizza at SORGIES on east fourth or lums, food fair, grand union, zayre , richards,in 1970 i used to work at the bp gas station in hialeah drive and okee rd. please if any one is from my area please let me know oh and to ROBBYN i do remember the montanary they took over all the houses on east 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th streets along with a building on fourth thank you DON god bless you for the memories i am LEONARD

My mom, Toni, made pizzas at Mae and Daves beer and wine for years on Palm and 13 St. My sister worked at Lucky Day bar on E. 25th Street and E. 7 Ave for years (Jackie Jones), Home Lumber on E 25th Street and E. 7 ave, Paddock Bar at Palm Ave and the railroad tracks, Tendells feed and supply store on E. 1 Avenue and 9 Street, Essex theater on E. 4 Ave and Hialeah Drive, Royal Castle across the street I used to get a frosted glass mug of root beer 2 hamburgers for less then a quarter, hamburgers were 7 cents the birch beer was 5 cents 1 cent tax and a nickel change hahaha. Those were the days. Also went to many dances at the Muncipal Auditorium on Palm and 49 St, and swam there too. I mostly swam at the Benny Babcock pool which had an underground type of changing room. Across the street was a fruit stand that had iron gates all around it to lock it up we use reach throught the gates for fruit at nite, we were bad, not like today. I went to Comstock Elementry school, then on to Miami Springs Junior High the first year it opened. We would all hitch hike home from school then, it was pretty safe. I dream of those days then, but everytime they would be knocking down all the older homes and be building new taller ones, strange but true. If you have any connections of any of these, I'm glad. Guest, You are full of it. Robbin is not a cutthroat, and neither am I, and I resent your remark. It seems that you have something against robbin and his friends. If you knew the whole true story, then you would know that neither robbin or his friends ,which I am one of, started the problems that evolved. Others came and started trouble, and myself , and robbin, and other friends of ours gave it back to them. That's the truth of it. There are others worse than us. Think what you like. I feel sorry for my friend robbin, he is the scapegoat here.

I Remember all the things that You and Your Sister Mentioned. Good Posts. I Went Skating at Rustic Roller Rink, a Lot, and I Bowled and Hung around Hialeah Lanes, all The time, I Rode The Ponies at The Pony Rides , and I Went to Royal Castle, Burger King, Flamingo Plaza, The Essex and Circle Theatres, Carole's Restaurant, The Candy Store, ect. I Lived there, from 1951, to 1964, and then we moved to West Hialeah, near Miami Lakes, where I Live Now. I went to Hialeah Elementary School all 6 Years, 1/2 Of the 7th Grade at Miami Springs JR. High, then I Went to Palm Springs JR. High, and Hialeah High. I Am now 59 Years Old, and My Brother Danny, is 55, and will be 56 in June. He Knew Your Sister in Elementary School. The police shot them once corralled in someone's yard. The elephant at the carnival in the parking lot of Flamingo Plaza on E. 10th Ave, and the guy with the shovel who followed after it! (1959 I think). The tall Australian pine trees that would fall across LeJune Rd. after each hurricane...the flooded yards after Donna. The huge piles of tree branches that would line the streets too and we would make the best secret forts in them! The Hoffann's were our neighbors on E. 19th Street, the only house with a swimming pool and their Dad, Fabian gave swimming lessons. The blood curdling screams from the kids learning to swim by having an empty metal kerosene can belted around their waists - I was one of those kids, but I did learn how to swim. I remember the "tomato boy" as well as the truck that drove around selling fresh vegetables and fruits that looked like a fruit stand with a truck front end attached. We had mango trees and every time they were in season a family would come and ask to buy them. The Dad would send all his kids running to catch the mangoes as he would climb up and cut them loose. How the garbage men would walk down the alleys between the houses carrying a big can on their shoulder to dump each homes' garbage in and carry it back to the waiting garbage truck. The first Cuban boat lift, I was in second grade at Hialeah Elementary School on E. 6th Ave. that fall. The kids spoke no English and cried the first week of school in their new homeland. One girl I remember so well, Rosa Reyes, spoke no English but by that Spring was the winner of the second grade spelling bee. The candy store we had to pass on our bikes on the way to school, which was strictly off limits, had the best 2 cent candy and cold bottles of Squirt! Collecting bottles for the 2 cents refund that we would get from Food Fair on LeJune and East 9th street. The bowling alley on East 9th St. that my Mom, Lillian would walk us to so she could bowl in her woman's league. Harrington's Book Store in downtown Hialeah - my friend Ann Harrington was my buddy in Girl Scouts. Mrs. Ada Smith, our leader, was the kindest woman I've ever known, her husband was a postman. The Girl Scout Little House was near downtown too. My Aunt and Uncle lived across the street from us and raised bait in big cement worm beds and shrimp that my Dad, TJ Richardson (Jack) would go out and help net from local canals. The best memory I have of fishing as young child was always seeing the manatees (we called them sea cows or mermaids then) as they lumbered slowly down the Miami River off Okeechobee Road by the railroad trestle. Every time my Dad would drive down Palm Springs Mile (W. 49th St.) he would say that he could just kick himself for not buying some of the pastureland there when it was 50 cents an acre! Does anyone remember The Cove restaurant on NW 79th Street near the race track? How about being able to get in to the Essex Theater for 1 soda pop bottle cap? Dr. Robert M. Wolf, one of west Hialeah's first dentists, passed away on February 13, 2009. His office was located in the southeast corner of W. 12th Avenue and 68th Street when there was no development at all north of W. 68th Street at 12th Avenue. I started going to him in the early 60's and when I joined the Coast Guard in 1966 he forgave the small balance that I had on my account. I went back to him in 1970 for a few years before his assistant Dr. Jay Caplen opened a new office in Plantation and I went to him for a few years. DR. ROBERT WOLF, 77 Dr. Robert Wolf \| `Driven' dentist gave care to needy BY CHRISTINA VEIGA cveiga@MiamiHerald.com Dr. Robert ``Bob'' Wolf, a man who always asked ``What can I do for you?'' died of cardiac arrest at his North Miami-Dade home Saturday, his family said. He was 77. As chief director of Community Smiles, a nonprofit organization that provides dental care for the needy in Miami-Dade County, Wolf made people smile with his work in dentistry and his wry sense of humor. ``He was very driven,'' said his daughter, Caryn Wolf, 51, who lives in Oakland, Calif. ``Other guys were golfing, and he was running around trying to get kids dental care.'' Wolf's volunteer work began in the 1970s, when he and his wife, Myriam, became involved with the South Florida Conference on Soviet Jewry. He was chairman of the organization for eight years in the 1970s, lobbying Congress to allow Jews in the former Soviet Union to enter the Unites States and Israel. Wolf's work continued when he and his wife helped establish a chapter of the Association for the Advancement of the Mentally Handicapped in Miami-Dade County to benefit their son, Eric, who is developmentally disabled. ``It helped me get a job. Caryn said her father got along with everybody ``like Switzerland,'' and was attentive to his children. Hello, I grew up in Hialeah, near Walker Park, in the early 60's, attended James H. Bright Elementary, Filer, and Miami Springs High. My favorite drink in the wole wide world back then, was Root Beer, and the one I liked best , and drank most was Dad's Root Beer. I used to buy it in the big 2 Liter Bottle at the Winn Dixie on west 29th street and 10th avenue. I would buy a Loaf of white bread, Dirr's Gold Seal Baloney, and Dad's Root Beer, and with a Baloney Sandwich, and a Glass of Dad's Root Beer , I was on Top Of The World. I think Dad's Root Beer, was made in Hialeah. It was Really good . I now Live in Denver, and I still Like Root Beer. These days, I drink Barq's Root Beer. Hello Hialeah. I miss you sometimes. Hello fellow Hialeahans, I have so many fond memories of Hialeah growing up there from the mid 50's till the 60's. From the times spent fishing in the canal at the the corner of W,56 Pl and Red Road to dragging a surfboard on the #6 bus early in the am to go to South Beach. I posted in another section here that I recently got in touch with several friends from the neighborhood (9 of us) and we held a reunion in Orlando 2 weeks ago. We haven't seen each other in over 40 years and it was amazing how it seemed like it was only had been a week. What a great time we had just hanging out. The attendees were Myself, Maxine Drummond,Lisa and Shari Foy, Nancy and Robin Roberts, Steve Fischer, Ron Tudor, and Dick Flett. Nancy came from New Hamshire, Steve and Dick from North Carolina, and Shari from Arizona. The rest of us still live in Florida from the South to the Panhandle. We plan on doing this every year now. So if any old friends want to join in for the next one let me know by posting a comment or e-mailing me .

Bisteclandia also had the best, bar none, churros and hot chocolate I've ever tasted. Their hot chocolate was made with good quality dark chocolate stirred into whole milk, not the prepackaged crap they stir into water these days at restaurants, and they also added a pinch of Maizena corn starch to make it really thick. Their churros were fried perfectly and were never saturated. I guess they were conscientious and changed the oil frequently. On cold winter days, the line went out the door with folks purchasing bags of both to bring home to the family.

I remember standing on the steps of Milander pool in the mid 60`s and seeing the black smoke from thr cargo plane crash on nw 36 st. My best friend Bob Paigo was with me. His fathers english Ford line`s auto dealership was destroyed in that crash. We didn`t know it at that time though. My mom used to take out the lower jalousie windows from my sisters bedroom and sell shaved ice snow cones to kids getting out of school from Dupuis Elm. We lived at 1041 w 59 pl.

Does anyone remember taking dance lessons at a building across from the Hialeah Fire Dept. on Palm Ave, near City Hall? The lady who gave the lessons was Miss Lorraine...recitals were held every year at the Dade County Auditorium, I think. Just wondered if anyone remembered this place. .. a part of OLD Hialeah!

We used to ride to the U-totem on Red Rd. and 65th to get sodas, and just behind the U-totem a guy named Bill Ellis, and his Son Dale lived. I used to Go there and Had Great Grilled in Butter Hotdogs, and A & W Rootbeer Iced Cold, and My Dad used to Go There a Lot, and He Brought Gallon Plastic Jugs Of A & W Root Beer Home From There. They Had Great Pizza , at Their Concession Stand, and The Pizza Dough Crusts, or Shell: They used For Their Pizza, was From Original Crispy Pizza . I Know , Because The Lady Who Ran That Pizza Concession, was a Close Personal Friend Of Our Family, Named Marge Bernero, RIP, and She Told us Back then, that She Got Her Pizza Crusts, from Original Crispy Pizza. I used to Go To Hialeah Speedway, a Lot as a Kid, and Their Pizza Slices , were Perfection. I Should Know, cause I Always Got A Couple Of Slices , and A Cold Cola , each Time there. I Go To Target, Lowe's, and Applebee's, and I Remember Hialeah Speedway, and All The Great Races, and Great Times I Had There, especially : as A Kid. I Miss Hialeah Speedway !!!!!! Manocarz, Yes, Yoo Hoo Did Have A Plant, in Hialeah Before. It was Not too Far From Opa Locka Airport, and Vista Memorial. Where Yoo Hoo was, is about 1 1/2 Miles From My House. I Love Yoo Hoo Iced Cold, and I Get One, once in a While. Farm Stores Ice Cream nowadays, is Good, But it's Not as Good as in Our Younger Days. They used to Have Their Offices and Plant, in Medley, But now: Excuse The Pun, They Farm Out , The Making Of Their Ice Cream, and Processing Of Milk, and They Have No Sherbet. They Have A Million Products now, and it's Very Convenient, But I Liked The Old Farm Stores Better. I Still Go To The One Close To My House, But as I Say : Some Items The Old Farm Stores Had, are now not Sold there, and Some that are: Are Not as Good. Remember: When Their Milk, Chocolate Milk, and Grape Drink, were in Glass Bottles ???? And Yes : The Best Pizza , in East Hialeah, in The 50's and 60's, was at Patsy's, and Mae & Dave's. We used to Go to Patsy's To Eat Pizza there, and My Dad Brought Home Pizza , and Hot Dogs Steamed in Beer , From Mae & Dave's. Both Places Had Great Pizza !!!!!! And When We wanted Spaghetti, We Went To Patsy's, and Villanova. And Later On, We Went to Jerry & Joe's , and Fusaro's. Manocarz, Did You Go To Grable's Bakery ????? I Loved That Place !!!!!!! As Far as Farm Stores Ice Cream Now: You're Not Missing anything. Publix Premium Ice Cream, Edy's Ice Cream, and Blue Bell, are Just As Good, or Much Better, than The Old Farm Stores Ice Cream, and A Country Mile, Better than The Present Farm Stores Ice Cream. I Like Publix Premium, Edy's , Breyer's, Blue Bell, Haagen Daasz, and Ben & Jerry's. And We Have 2 Carvel's on 49th Street, in Hialeah, and Their Ice Cream, is Great. Does anyone , Remember : Original Crispy Pizza ????? They were a Pizza Provisions Company, who Specialized in Al Ready Made Pizza Crusts Shells. You Could Buy Their Pizza Crusts, and Put Sauce, and Cheese on them, and Bake Them. Their Warehouse, was on East 26th Street, just east of East 10th Avenue, and you could see the Back of Their Place From East 25th Street, near The Rexall Drugstore. They Had Big Delivery Trucks , that Delivered Their Products. Another Hialeah Memory.

They Looked just like the Half Gallon Ice Cream Cartons, But Smaller, and They Had Flavors : Lemon, Rasberry, Lime , & Pineapple. We Still Have Farm Stores here, But Nowadays: They Have Lots More Items, than The Old Days, But No Sherbet, and They Don't Have Their Own Dairy, in Medley any more. Manocarz, I think you are thinking of another power outage because we didn't lose power during the Great Northeast Blackout. My buddies and I went down to MIA to take photos of Senator Robert Kennedy and his wife arriving that night and the first thing the reporters asked him was if he knew about the power outage in the Northeast. He didn't know anything because the power went out up there while he was enroute to Miami. Welcome back everyone!!!!! While this site was down due to a power outage I thought about the large east coast power failure in the mid-1960's. Do you remember where you were? I was in the parking lot of Richards at Red Road and Palm Springs Mile. I remember my father made us stand by the car for about an hour hoping the lights would come back on so he would'nt have to drive down Red Road amongst all the mainiacs without traffic lights to take us home.

There was not Adequate Supervision there, or these acts of Normalism, would not Have Been Happening. And even if they were sick, Mentally Ill, or Autism Afflicted, or Whatever: I Don't Care Beens about That. That they Did The Deeds, is The Fact. The Place is Long Gone, and I was Mentioning another Hialeah Memory, as Nostalgia, and if I Made a Joke about it: That's My Business, and I Am Sensitive, For Good Acts, But I Will Never Sympathize, or Condone Acts Of Needless Violence, and Destruction of Property, By The Mentally Ill, or anyone Else. I agree Carey, and thanks for your post. I only intented to mention an old memory, and that is truly how things went. Kids can be mean, and the immaturity stands out in children. It is good to grow. The State owned Taccachale (formerly Sunland Training Center) is down the street from me and we observe daily the efforts of the residents there to mainstream. They are never a problem and always a reminder of how life can be so much more difficult for others. For anyone who may have become offended at my memory post, please accept my apology. It was intended to be nothing more than a post about a memory, something that truly happened in the old days in Hialeah. Your reminder is very appropriate - thanks again.

I was reading the comments about A.J. Montanari Schools and having lived close to the schools since 1960 I never had a problem with it being there . I had a nephew who lived there in the mid 70s and they helped him greatly. Today he is a person who like all of us only wants to feel like we are here on Earth to make a difference no matter how small it might be. To place them out in the boondocks away from society would be a shame, after all they are all somebodies Son's and Daughter's. When we become parents most of us are very fortunate to never have to deal with this kind of illness, but it is no different than any other illness that a child could have. The word retard is such a cruel word to refer to children that may have Autism or some other disorder that makes them seem different. As Americans we should always be willing to help our fellow citizens to adjust into the mainstream of society and to feel useful and as important as everyone else. Carey

Yes - I remember well the Montanari School. They mainstreamed a few of the kids through South Hialeah Elementary. We would insult pesky kids by calling them 'Montanari kids.' I was just telling my wife about that pplace the other day. If I remember correctly, they had red front doors on all of the residence buildings. They also had white Dodge vans for transporting the kids. A good friend of mine was real embarrassed when his family bought a used white Dodge van for a family car. All of us accused him of being a montanari kid so he started riding his bicycle to school instead of getting dropped off by his parents.

Does anyone , Remember : The Montanari School Complex, For Retarded, and Problem Kids, that was Just North of Hialeah Drive, and Between East 4th Avenue, and East 3rd avenue ???? I Remmember, that some of The Kids, were Quite Violent, and Insane, and one time : one Kid From The School Attacked one of My Friends, with A Screwdriver. And They some times Started Fires arond The Area. That Place, was A Bad Neighbor, and A Mini Menaceville, for Society. It should never Have Been, in A City Neighborhood, Like it was. Manocarz, I Always Watched , and Loved Dallas when it was on, and I Went to The Southfork Ranch, in Plano , Texas, 15 Miles North Of Downtown Dallas. The Inside Of The House , was Empty, I Went By The Swimming Pool , and Looked in. They Filmed The Outside There, But The inside Scenes, were Filmed at Lorimar Studios. I Think They Do That A Lot. I Went To Fort Worth, and Ate at The Famous Cattleman's Steakhouse, and IHad Chateaubriand Steak, and it was Wonderful. It's in The Fort Worth Stockyards area, in North Fort Worth. I Think that's Where They Called Braddock, on Dallas, and Their Cattleman's Club, was Where I Ate. That was a Thrill, for Me, To Be in Dallas, and to Go to Southfork Ranch, and to The Cattleman's, For A Great Charcoaled Steak Dinner. I Could Imagine that Jock Ewing, J. Manocarz, I Don't Remember that Ponderosa House Exhibit. I Missed That one, But in 1965, My Mom, My Grandma, and My Little Brother and I , Went one Saturday Morning, to Palm Springs North, Just North Of The Palmetto Expressway, and Just East Of The Big Curve. The Cast Of Bonanza, were all there to Promote New Houses, Being Built in Palm Springs North, with A Bonanza Theme. The Cartwright's, were All At The Model Homes Offices area, and You Got to Meet Them, and Get Autographs. The Funny thing about it , is : That The Houses , were Being Built By The Laurence Construction Company, and The Houses all Were Named after Bonanza, an Our House Here in Northwest Hialeah, was Built By The Laurence Construction Company, and Our House, is The Ponderosa Model. There are 3 Ponderosa L - Shaped Houses, on Our Round Lake of 60 Houses, and There are 2 Cartwright Models on The Lake, But The Rest of The Houses on Our Lake, Were Built First, and They are not Bonanza Themed Houses. They are 4 other Models : The Imperial, The Nassau, The Trinidad, and The Bermuda . Our Lake is 400 Yards Across, and on The Sidewalks, and Streets: It's 1 Mile Around. No Motor Boats are Allowed, only Sailboats, Row Boats, Paddleboats, Canoes, and You Can use Electric Trolling Motors. No Alligators, in Our Lake, We Hope. Never Seen any, and Hope I Never Do. People Swim in The Lake. I used to, But Can't anymore, Due To My Foot, with an Open Wound, and Diabetes, and The Threat Of Infection, and Amputation. Man, You went on a Lot Of Good Field Trips Too. I Figured You Did !!!!!! And That Popeye Playhouse Appearance, was Big Time. Very Sad , about Your Brother there Though. I Know that must Have Ruined it for you too. An earlier discussion about school field trips reminded me of the following field trips we made from South Hialeah Elementary School through the years there: Miami Seaquariam (5th grade); Planetarium (more than once); Serpentarium; The dairy with the ice cream shop at it (cannot remember the name tonight - at least twice); Royal Castle Commisary in an earlier grade; Appearing with my first grade class on the Skipper Chuck Show - taped during the day and played the next morning (my late twin made it to the studio, but his illness was beginning to take a toll on him by then and he got too sick to go on the air so he was behind the scenes while we were out front being taped - I just remember being worried about him so I couldnt enjoy the shows taping, but I did enjoy watching it the next morning while getting dressed for school and my grandparents came over to watch it with me and give me .25 cents or something as a reward. Anyway - a few field trip memories.

Robbin, your memory below about the Ocsar Meyer event at Food Fair reminded me that once at one of the plazas in Hialeah of Miami they had the house from Bonanza on display and for a fee you could go inside. I probably wasn't the real thing, but we kids were convinced. I remember trying to run up the stairs off the living room and around the corner there was a nook and the stairs ended abruptly. The guide explained that there was no upstairs in the house and that any scenes shot from a supposedly upstairs room were done in a studio. I felt ripped off and lost interest from then on. Years later when Bonanza re-runs were being played on TV I carefully watched to see if anyone made it all the way upstairs. It was never the same after seeing that portable house somewhere in Dade Co. at a plaza.

I Remember at Hialeah Elementary, an Art Teacher, Named MR. Leblanc, and He Drove A Round White Volvo. I Think He only Came to Our School, once in a while. Maybe , He went around to other Schools. I Remember A Speech Therapist, Named MR. Fred Shaefer, who Came to our School, Like once a Week. He Helped Kids, who Didn't Pronounce Certain Words Correctly, Like : Church, Truck, Shift, From, ect. I was one of those Kids, Who He Helped. His Special Class , was in A Classroom, Next to The Library , Upstairs. He Had an idea , that My Problem, was Possibly Wax Buildup, in My Ears, and that I Didn't Hear Well, Then I wouldn't Pronounce Words Well. He Made an appointment , For Me, at The Dade County Board Of Health, and My Dad Took Me There, and MR. Shaefer, was There. A Doctor there, Put an Auger Looking Thing, in My Ears, and Cleaned Both Ears Out. Lots Of Wax Came Out. MR. Shaefer, was Right, and He Tested Me, in The Class After That, and I Did Perfect. Iwas Released , From His Special Class Then, and Never Had any More Problems. MR. Shaefer, was Good at what He Did, and Helped Me Immencely. When I 1st Started Leaving My Regular Class, and Going To MR. Shaefer's Special Class, Some Of The Kids Called Me : Retard, and Laughed at Me, and That Really Hurt. I Think I was in 2nd or 3rd Grade, at The Time. And Me Being A Boy, and Named Robbin, Caused Me A Lot Of Problems Too: I Hated My Name, and Wished that My Parents would Have Named Me Charles, James, Robert, or Anything , But Robbin. They would Say : Look at The Robin Bird, Isn't She Cute: Tweet Tweet, and Other Kid's Making Fun Things, and Sometimes : I'd Fight, as A Result. Even Now, I Don't Like Disrespect, Which Causes Me Embarrassment, But I Like My Name Robbin now, as an Adult.

When I Lived in Sun Tan Village, in East Hialeah, I Remember one Particular Day, in The Mid Fifties, Like Maybe 1955 or 1956, and at The Food Fair Store, on Lejeune Road, and East 9th Street, in The Parking Lot, in Front Of The Store: An Area was Blocked Off, and A Band 50's Rock Band was Playing Hits Of That Time, Such as : Alley Oop, and Peanut Butter. And They Were Real Good. And The Oscar Mayer Weinermobile, was There. It was a Promotion, of Some Type, either For Food Fair, or Oscar Mayer, or Possibly Both, But Either way, it was a Big Deal, Especially, For A Little 4 Year Old , Like Me. In The Mid To Late 50's, At Babcock Park: On , or around 4th Of July: Babcock Park, would Have A Special Swim at The Pool, and 4th of July Picnic , For Like 50 Cents. And for 50 Cents, You Got 2 Hot Dogs, and A Coke, and Could Swim, all Afternoon. It was a Good Deal, and Fun. Also, at Babcock Park, They Had a Summer Activity in The Recreation Hall, that My Little Brother, and I Loved, and Always Participated in, and That was a Ceramics Class, where You Picked out A Ceramic Wall Plaque, or Something Else, and You Paid For it, Like 50 Cents, and Then Babcock Park, and The City Of Hialeah: Furnished Paints, and Brushes, and You Painted Your Ceramics Piece, and Took it Home. That was Neat, and Fun !!!! I Remember I Had an Indian Head Wall Plaque, that Was Flat, to Go on The Wall, and I Painted it Real Neat, with Orange , and Black Paints, and Gave it to My Mom, and She Liked it, and Put it up in Her Bedroom, on The wall. I also Remember An Old Airplane, Like A P 52 Mustang, I Painted, and A Florida Orange Too. I Remember Some Of The Babcock Park Directors Back Then : MR. Ed Hall, MR. Joel Tierce SR., MR. Ed Mackey, & MRS. Ptack . I also Remember: That they Had Teen Dances, in The Hall, at Babcock, and I Listened to The Music, and Hung around outside, Being A Little Kid. I Remember, as a Little Kid, in The 50's while Growing up near Hialeah Lanes, There was a Place Off of N. W. 62nd Street, and 37th Avenue, called Bum's Alley. It was Across The Street, from A FPL Substation, on N. W. 37th Avenue, and a Little Bit Back in Towards Warehouses, on The Railroad Sidings, and A Bunch Of Old Men, that We all called Bums: Hung around there. They were actually: Hobos, who Rode in Boxcars, and They were probably: Scurvy Snowbirds, who Had Hitched A Ride, on Boxcars, From Cold Northern Climates. We Kids Knew about the Place, and The Hobo's there, But We Looked at Them, from Far Away, But Never Went There, or Spoke to Them, Because We Were Afraid Of Them. They Were Grown Men, and We Knew They Were Bums, and Not Outstanding Citizens, So We Kept Our Distance. Does Anyone Else Remember This ????? Just Something I Happened to Think Of. Robbin Of Hialeah.

I Remember , as A Kid, in The 50's , and 60's: When You Got Past Pizza Palace, on West 49th Street, and about 10th Avenue, where Denny's is now: There was Little After That. And My Friend Jim Phillips, and I used to Go out off Okeechobee Road, Across 27 From The Graham's Church, in Pennsuco, and Shoot Beer Bottles , with Our 22 Rifles. That was Great Fun. Now , There's No Pennsuco, it's Part Of Hialeah Gardens, way out West. Pennsuco, Stood For : Pennsylvania Sugar Company. The Late Long Time Hialeah Mayor Henry Milander, was Originally: From Pennsylvania. Anyone Have any Stories about Out West in Pennsuco ????? And Remember: When South Of West 49th Street, on West 12th Avenue, was Woods only. Where The Apollo Theatre was, and Where Chico's Restaurant is now, The Mango Hill area , of Hialeah, was all Woods. West Hialeah, Has Really Grown, since The Early 60's, and East Hialeah, was Always Fully Developed, But It Expanded , Big Time, and Now: is Over Grown, Out Of Proportion. It's Too Crowded, and A Pain. All Of Hialeah, is Overgrown Now, and The Zoning, and Lack Of Laws Being Enforced, Heavy Traffic, and in General Respect For Others, Makes Hialeah, Very Undesirable. People Here: Disturb others, with Way Too Loud Music, Using Train Horns On Pickup Trucks, For No Reason, Booming Bass Car Stereos, That Rattle Your House Windows, Speeding , and Drag Racing, on Neighborhood Streets, Reckless Discourteous Driving , Bad Attitudes, Littering, Loud Profanity, Everywhere, and No One Does Anything about it. In The Old Days, in Hialeah, The Police , were Much More Strict. Now a Days, it Looks Like They Do A Lot Of Looking The other way, and Everything Here, is Out Of Hand. That's How I See It !!!!!!! What Happened ????? Hialeah, is A Jungle Now, without Lions , Tigers , and Bears, But Lots Of Bad Attitudes, and Selfishness. I Am A Full Time Janitor, Picking up Trash, That Ignorant People wih Bad Habits, Throw in My Yard, and Driveway. Did You Ever Ride The Ponies, and The Go Karts, on East 9th Street, By My House ?????? The Karland Go Kart Rides Track, was only A Rock Throw, from My House. I Rode There, a Lot, But I Had My Own Go Karts: 3 Of Them, at Different Times. I Love Go Karts, Especially Real Fast Racing Ones. The Last one I Had, in around 1962, Had A Chainsaw Engine, and was Real Fast. It would Do around 70 MPH. I Ate at BurgerKing, on East 9th Street, all The Time, and at Carole's Restaurant, Pizza , and Hot Dogs Steamed in Beer, From Mae & Dave's, Royal Castle, Hialeah Lanes Restaurant, The Luncheonette, at Rexall in Sun Tan Plaza, and Flamingo Cafeteria, and Sometimes: at Park Lane Cafeteria, Golden Point, and at Walgreen's Restaurant, at Flamingo Plaza. Manocarz, I Doubt , Very Seriously: If any Kids Now Know The Joy We Derived , From Boxball, Circle Ball, Tetherball, ect. All They seem to Know now, is : Soccer, Soccer, and Soccer. I Like Soccer, and I Realize that it's Played around The World, But I Think it's a Bit Over Emphasized. But I Guess Football, Basketball, and Baseball, aer Played also, Nowadays, But I Have Never Seen: any Boxball, Circle Ball, or Tetherball: Being Played anywhere. They are Lost Fun Activities, I'm Afraid. On My Street, East 6th Lane, We Took Chalk and Made A Box, or a Circle, on The Street, and We Played Day and Night. And We Threw The Football, and Played Baseball Catch, in The Street, or in our Yards. And Kick The Can, and Hide and Go Seek, We Played Them Too. These Kids Now, are Lost !!!! They Don't Know what Fun is. And We Didn't Have Sex Then, only We Played Spin The Bottle, and How Deep Is The Well, and We Got to Kiss Some, But That was it , and We Didn't Know any Different. I Went to Kid's Parties, in Elementary School, and We Danced To Records, Bobbed For Apples, Played Those 2 Kissing Games, Drank Punch, or Sodas, ate Cake, and Thanked The Hostess, and Chaperones, For Inviting Us. That was Our Adventures , Back Then, But Now: There's Not as Much Guidance, Supervision, or Training, For The Most Part, as I See it !!!!!! That's My Opinion !!!! And There are Exceptions, I Know, But in General, I Mean To Say . It's Sad, They, - The Kids, are The Losers, in The Deal. Robbin's listing of his school teacher's at Hialeah Elementary made me wonder if the Mrs. Bouchet (or Boucher?) was related to or perhaps the wife of our Principle at South Hialeah Elem., Mr. Gordon Boucher. My teachers there were Mrs. Jane Bauer (now deceased), Mrs. Hardy, Miss Pearl, Mrs. Yeager & Mr. Bateman, Mr. McManus (Mr. Mac) and Mr. Thomas. For PE we had Mrs. Jane Crutchfield and for Librarian a Mrs. Rolle. Other teachers there, none of which Ipersonally had were: Mrs. Derr, Mrs. Shermer, Mrs.Golf who later became Mrs. Young, Mrs. Nixon (deceased), Mrs. Swezey, Mr. Pickering, Mrs. Tava (deceased) and others I can picture in my mind, but cannot name.

I went to Hialeah Elementary...names I remember, Kathleen Moore, David Allen, Donna Woods...the only field trip I remember was going to Food Fair! How did you get all those cool trips? I remember playing ALOT of kickball, tetherball, we did have square dancing (hated it!), and school plays. Other than that Hialeah Elem does not stand out, of course I only went there thru 4th grade, teacher, Mr. Patil, so maybe 5th and 6th graders got the cool trips. I went to Meadowlane Elem on the westside and I do remember going to the Miami Herald building and being VERY impressed!! Anyone Reading Here That Went To Hialeah Elementary School ????? I Went there all 6 Years, from : 1957 To 1963. I Remember The Afterschool Magic Shows, in The Cafeteria, with Magician : Cliff Lesta, and I Always Went, I Think it was A Quarter Admission, and A Good Show. I Also Loved , and Went to : Our Fabulous Hialeah Elementary School Carnivals. And I Loved Our Library, Upstairs, and Went There Often, to Read Books. My Favorite Teacher There, was MR. Delno Oliver, P. E. Coach. He was A Real Nice Guy, and A Great Teacher. And I Admired MR. Clyde E. Brewer, our Principal, Because He was Always Around, and Making Sure His School, was Tip Top. He was Everywhere, and Would Silently Sneak in To Your Classroom, To Observe, and Listen. He was A Great Principal !!!!! Teachers I Recall : MR. Stevens, MR Akins, MRS. Keller, MRS. Harrell, Miss Bouchet, Miss Kleinfeld, MRS. Green, MR. Drew, MR. Griner, MRS. Ropeik, MRS. Lucas, MR. Lay, MR. Kruse, & MRS. Whiteside . I Remember our Neat Field Trips, Our Fresh Fruit Snack Breaks, in The Classroom, every Morning , & Fire Drills. Guest, When I Was in JR. High, Filer, Had A Bad Reputation, For Rumbles, Lots Of Fights, ect., But I've Got News For Everyone: The 2 JR. Highs I went to , were Real Tough Too, and Had Plenty Of Fights, and Big Rumbles Against other Schools too, Such as Filer, and 9th Graders, From Miami Jackson. Miami Springs JR. High, was A Very High Rated JR. High, said to Be Rated # 1 in Dade County, when I went there in 1963 - Jan. 1964, and The School Faculty, was Very Strict, But There were Still Lots Of Fights, ect., anyway, And Palm Springs JR. High , was A Pretty Tough School too, with Lots Of Roughnecks, and Fights, Bullies Galore, ect. , And Madison JR. High Was another Tough School, with Lots Of 17 Year Olds Still There, So I Don't Think it was only Henry H. Filer, But Filer Had A Bad Reputation, and Got Blamed Solely. When I First Transferred into Palm Springs JR. High, in Jan. 1964, There were Hialeah Police Paddy Wagons Circling The Streets Around Our School Field. And There was John Carroll, The Toughest Guy in The School, and His Bunch Of Tough Guy Buddies, who Bullied Little 13 Year Old 7th Graders Like Me, and These Guys Were Big, and Like 17 Years Old, and Drove Cars, and Motorcycles to School, and Smoked Cigarrettes , ect. The Only Person , who Saved Us Little Kids, From These Fonzies, Was MR. Lanier, The Dean Of Boys. He Paddled Them, and Grabbed Them By the Arm, and Took Them, to His Office, when He Caught Them Bullying Some Little 7th Grader. He Was Great, Very Tough, But Very Fair. He Didn't Put Up with Nonsense, From Those Big Bullies. He Handled Them, Real Good. They Feared Him, and Respected Him. And To Look at Him, You Would Laugh. I Worked for Swift & Co., Driving Meat and Foodservice Trucks, To Publix, and Everywhere, I Worked For Brinks, on The Money Trucks, Wells Fargo, on The Money Trucks, and I Worked for Pinkerton, and Securitas. I Was Awarded A Social Security Medical Early Retirement. I Have A Bad Foot, and Other Medical Problems, which Forced Me To Take An Early Retirement. I Liked Her, at Hialeah High, But Never Knew Her, I Only Admired Her From A Distance, in The Hallways, Ect. I Remember in My 10th Grade Biology Class, with Teacher : MR. Clifford, we Had a Great Christmas Party, With A Big Wedding Punch Bowl, Filled with Grape Kool Aid, Spiked with Grape Wine, and it was Sooooo Good, and Even MR. Clifford, Said : This was The Best Grape Kool Aid, I Ever Tasted !!!!!! We Had A Blast !!!! I Loved The After The Football Games' Sock Hops, in The Hialeah High Gym, with Live Bands, and I Always Went to them. Did You Know Betty Lefort ??? She Sat next to Me in Homeroom, in The Auditorium, in 10th Grade, with MR. Grill. I Had A Big Crush on Her, and We Seemed to Get along Real Well, But I Never Asked Her out, and I Thought about Her All Summer, and Missed Her, But Then in September, We Started 11th Grade, and I Saw Betty, on My Bus, out Here, near where I Live, and I was Surprized But Then She acted Distant, Like She Didn't Even Remember Me. Guest, I Got in Trouble, all The Time, in All Of My Schools, For Minor infractions, But The Teachers Saw Them as Punishable. Some Of My usuals, were : Chewing Gum in Class, Talking, Laughing, Pulling Girls Hair, - Pony Tails, Not Prepared For Class: & No Gym Clothes, No School Supplies, ect. . I Only Had a Handful Of Fights, in 11 Years, of School. In Elementary School, I Had A Lot Of Teasing, About My Being A Guy Named Robbin, and Sometimes: it Ended in A Fight. Did You Know : Raymond Oliver, & Bill Parker ???? They were 2 Of My Friends, at Hialeah Elementary. Dorrine Price, Linda Jenkins, Diane Howell, and Alana Temple, were 4 Of My Girlfriends, During My Elementary School Years. Alana Temple, was Like 1 Year Older than Me, and She went to Hialeah Elementary, and Then Filer, cause She Lived North Of The FEC Railroad Tracks, at 21st Street. Yes I Remember Pete Booth's Long and Wide Sideburns. He went to Filer, and Then Palm Springs, and He and I Became Good Friends, at Palm Springs JR. High, and Played Electric Guitars, and Bass Together, at His House in Miami Lakes. We Both Had Bands. Rick Seaman, another Friend, was in My Band. I Had A Vox Portable Organ I Played, an Amplifier, A Microphone, and An Electric Guitar. I Played Rythmn Guitar, and Organ. I Alternated , Between The 2. We Had Fun !!!!!! Robbin...Filer is a blur...just kept quiet and "stayed alive"!! All the rumors of Filer were a little jacked up, but the staff was no nonsense.I was a quiet person but got detention once for chewing gum - big offense!- by Mr. Dotson. I had Mr. Calhoun for home room for a few years, he was a hoot. I did go skating at Hialeah Rink across the street too. My best friend Darlene Carey and Ronnie Kelsey (they ended up married for a short while) went there too...more when we were in high school tho'. I do remember Pete Booth...his dad worked at Pan Am too. As a matter of fact, I transferred to Gainesville in the 80s with Ma Bell and he worked there as did his two ex-wives...he is very happily married now (to another telephone girl) and is retired. His mom lived two blocks over from us in Keystone...remember the mutton chops he had? That's how I remembered him so well from high school. Small world, eh?

Anyway, did you know Mr. Hoffman who used to give kids swimming lessons at his house in Hialeah =east side, near suntan village? He was great ...taught my baby sister how to swim when she was 22 months old. His son was a swim coach at Milander, then Miami Springs, I think. Real nice family. We knew the Prices...three girls and one boy, Marcia, Diane, Dorrine and Dougie. Their dad worked at Pan Am with my dad. Their mom was a super nice lady too.

But I Had Gone there, as a Little Kid, with My Parents, to watch Planes Only. Nice to Hear From You Again, So Soon. A Pleasant Surprize, to Be Sure !!!! I Guess , You Are Right, about Royal Castle, as I Believe I Remember: One time Going to a Former Royal Castle, in Eau Gallie, and it was Renamed : Harbor House. That was when I was Young, maybe around 1960. ??? I Think all of The Royal Castles , Started Going Down, Towards The Last. That was a Shame Too, cause You and I Both Know How Good They Were, in Their Day !!!!!! The Old Royal Castle Commissary, Where we Took Tours, across The Street, from Flamingo Plaza, Looks Sad, and Terrible, these Days: It Needs Painted, and Looks, and is Abandoned. What A Shame !!!!!! We left Hialeah before I was old enough to date, but my parents and my older brothers would take us to that road to watch the planes come and go overhead. It was actually thrilling. Royal Castles must have had a further range than Vero Beach because there were at least two here in Gainesville into the 1970's. Both buildings are still standing. One houses Lernardo's Pizza by the Slice on W. University Avenue almost at 13th Street near the U of F, and the other is at the Williston Road (121) exit to I-75, currently housing the 43rd Street Deli. Toward the end of Royal Castle's life up in this area, they converted a few to be called "Royal Castle Key West" and they made them a little larger and more elegant. It was all superficial because the food and its quality went down hill in the transformation and it accelerated their local demise. Great to hear about the carz.

Hello Robbin: That is the Royal Castle we ate at until we moved to Stuart. There we ate at the only one located at the SE corner of U.S. 1 and Hwy 76 (then known as Indiantown Road, now known as Kanner Hwy). Dairy Queen was across the street diagonally. Both are now gone and few current residents there remember them just like few in Hialeah remember the Royal Castles or other fond memories of ours.

I stop by here, once in a while, to Read, and I really enjoy what is written, for the most part, But I notice that there seems to be a Lack of interest, lately, and only one person writes. That's Sad, because this is a great thing, and a much needed outlet, for Memories, News, and things possibly of interest to many, so I am somewhat in Disbelief, that no one much posts here. But people have a choice, to write , or not to write, as we live in a Free Country, But Still it is odd, that Folks do not take advantage, of this opportunity to share memories, with others. I Remember, When There was a Royal Castle, on The Corner of Palm Avenue, across from Triangle Park, and Very Close to Okeechobee Road. And if you were By The Circle Theatre, in Miami Springs, across The Canal, and Bridge, You Could Look over and see That Royal Castle, from there. I Did just that, many times, as a kid, in The 50's. And after the Movie, at the Circle Theatre, I would Stop over at that very Royal Castle, and Have A Birch Beer, and a Cheeseburger. That Happen, Many times, as I Liked going to The Movies, and I Loved Royal Castle. I'm sure there's others, who Remember this.

Anyone Remember: The Old Winn Dixie Warehouse, in Southeast Hialeah ??? It was there, for Years, and Years, until they Closed that Very Old Complex, and Relocated to A Brand New Modern Winn Dixie Miami Warehouse, on N.W. 32nd Avenue, and 119th Street, about Maybe : 12 Years ago, I'm Guessing. I Can Remember Passing By The Old Warehouse, at night Going Home, from a Job, near The Civic Center, and Smelling The Wonderful Aroma of Fresh Bread Baking. There was A Little Mom And Pop Restaurant, on West 12th Avenue, next to The U - Totem, at about : 70th Street, in from 1964 to around : 1969, and I used to Go there, sometimes to Eat, and it was Pretty Good, Like Home Cookin. Is There anyone Reading Here who went to O'Quinn Park, in around 1965 ??? I used to Go There, and Check out a Tetherball, and Hit The Ball Back and Forth, By Myself, and I would Play anyone, who wanted to Play Me. I was The UnOfficial Tetherball Champion There, at That Time. No one Ever Beat Me !!!!! I would Hit The Ball Really Hard, and High, and The Opponent Could't Get it, and I would Keep Hitting it around, and around, until it Tethered, and I Won. I Remember : MR. Ziegler, was one of The O'Quinn Park Directors, and He was Very Nice. My Dad, was The Commissioner, Of H. A. A., and A Coach, and They Had their Clubhouse There, By West 60th Street, and when He Had Meetings at Night, I would Go with Him, and I Would Play Tetherball. Sometimes , I would Walk to O'Quinn Park, and Play Tetherball, a while, and then Walk Home, But Stopping at : U - Totem, for A Cold Soda, and then a Great Brownie, at Beachmont Delicatessen. Those were The Days, I was 14 Years Old, and Life was Good !!!!!!

Marcia B., Do You Remember The Beautiful Glass Mosaic Mural, on The Wall , in The Cafeteria, at Miami Springs JR. High ????? I Love Miami Springs, it's Such a Quiet Little Storybook Type Place. As A Kid, I was over there, all the time, at The Circle Theatre, The Pool, at The Recreation Center: I Loved The High Dive, and My Dad and I, used to Have Breakfast, at Eddie's Luncheonette, in Russ Sayer's Drugstore, on Westward Drive. They Had The Best Freshly Made: Old Fashioned Plain Donuts, I Loved those, and We would Get those, and Have them, with Coffee. Our Good Friend, Buck, was The Pharmacist there. I also Went to : Virginia Gardens, to The Green Mansions Pool, and To Burger's Bakery, and Grace's Delicatessen. Did You Go to : Miami Springs Elementary, Springview, Glenn Curtiss, or Blessed Trinity , after Twin Lakes ???? I Love The Bird Named Streets, in Miami Springs. Only Trying To Be Nice, That's All. Marcia B., Hi, Did You Know: Betty Lefort, and Debbie Waliga , at Hialeah High ???? I Had A Crush, on Both of Them, when I went To Hialeah High. And Maritza LLopis, had My Attention too. She was in My Bookkeeping 1 Class, with MR. Lozar, and I Became Friendly, with Her. I Loved The Hialeah High Sock Hops, in The Gym, after Football Games. I Went to Them, and Danced, and Enjoyed The Bands' Music They Had, Like The Drones, who were a Great Band, from Hialeah. When I went to Hialeah High, I ate Lunch, Most of The Time, at Burger Kastle, Tom Thumb, Julius Caesar's, or Franksville. I Loved Franksville, But it Didn't Last Long !!!!! My Favorite Teachers, at Hialeah High, were : Miss Nackley, MR. Siriani, Coach Griner, Coach Powell, Coach Kubichek, MR. Steinmetz, and MR. Clifford. I Took Typing 1, with Coach Powell RIP. Coach Powell, called Me : Elvis. I Took Spanish 1, with MR. Siriani, and Math, with MR. Steinmetz. I also Took Woodshop, in 10th Grade, with MR. Bailey. I Loved Woodshop. I Took it at Palm Springs JR. High too. I Also Loved The week, that we went to The Pool, for Swimming, with My P. E. Teacher ,- Coach Sam Griner. We Had Fun !!!! We Played Water Polo, More Like Kill The Guy With The Ball, and We Had Races Freestyle, The Width of The Pool, at The Shallow South End. I was a 1oth Grader, and We Had Juniors, and Seniors there too, But I Beat Everyone !!!!! Coach Griner, Couldn't Believe How Fast I Was, and He Ordered Me To Come to The Pool, that Afternoon, To Be On The Swimming Team. He Told Me: With That Speed, You are Automatically, on My Team. I Did Go there, and watch, But I Didn't want To Work That Hard, Practicing, and Practicing, and Then I would Have To Walk Home 3 Miles, every Day, after all that Tiring Swimming, So I Left. And of Course: The Very next Day, Coach Griner, wanted to know: Why I Didn't Come To Practice, and I Told Him The Truth. He Replied: O. K., I Understand, But it's A Real Shame, Because I Can See You: A Winning Champion Swimmer. He Was A Nice Person, I Liked Him. He told Me To Shut Up, 1 / 2 of The Schoolyear, and I Let it Build up, and that Day was it, I Had Had all I Could Take, and I Got up, and Knocked Him, and His Desk over, with an Explosion, of Rage, in My Punch, and We Had a Big Fight, Right There, and Then. We Knocked all the Desks Over, and in The End, Miss Nackley, Told Tom, to Get out of Her Class. And She Told Me: I Must Say, He Had That Beating You Gave Him Coming, But I Wish That The Beating Would Of Taken Place Elsewhere. We Both Got Suspended, By MR. Lessner. Marcia B., Do You Remember: At Palm Springs JR. High, when we went there, There were 2 Groups, in The School: The Surfers, and The Greasers ???? The Surfers went Surfing, at South Beach, By The Pier, and The Dog Track Parking Garage, and The Greasers Put Wildroot, Brylcream, Pomade, and Vitalis, in Their Hair, and They Didn't Like Surfers. Well, I was A Surfer, and a Greaser. I went Surfing , all the time, By The South Beach Pier, and I used All Of those Hair Tonics, and Pomade, But I Never Had Problems, with Either Group. I used to Take The # 6 Bus, to Biscayne Blvd. By The Omni, and The K or L Bus, to Washington Avenue Miami Beach, and Walk to By The Pier, and Rent A Surfboard, next To The Beach Bagel. The # 6 Bus Took Me From, and Returned Me To : West 65th Street -, Gratigny Road, and Red Road, in Front of The U- Totem. My Surfing Pal, was : Rod Bauza, My Neighbor. I Later, Got My own 8 ' 6" Surfboards Hawaii Board. I Had Lots of Fun Surfing. Am I Correct??? I Believe I Remember: That You Were A Surfer Girl, when You were at Palm Springs JR. High. I Took Woodshop, at PSJH, and I Made These Little Miniature 5 " Teak Wood Surf Boards, and Put them on a Chain, and Poured Cologne Of Mine on Them, and Gave them to Girls. Do You Remember That ?????? I Poured Canoe, Hawaiian Surf, English Leather, and Kanaka Colognes on Them. I spent Lots of Days Surfing at South Beach, and Ate Bagels, From Beach Bagel, Brownies, From The Big Bread Truck Type Lunch Truck, and Drank Pepsi, in a can, From The Beach Bagel's Machine. I Went Crazy over Her, at First Sight, But She Didn't Even Give Me A Glance. She was interested in Tommy Morrison. In 8th Grade, I asked Mary Ann Savage out, one Afternoon, on The Field, of PSJH, and She Said No, and Kept on Walking away , from Me. I Liked Jackie Zimmerman, RIP., But she was Mike Cleveland's Girlfriend. I Liked Kathy Keahey, and went to Her House a Lot, to See Her, and We Got along Good, But No Real Relationship. I Liked Julie Wollak, and I Danced with Her a Lot, at Our School Dances, But Nothing Else. I once Thought Kathy Greenwell, was Cute, when she First Transferred into PSJH, from Immaculate, I Believe. I Had a Big Crush on Gloria Amerson too. They Called Her : The Muslim. She Had A Boyfriend with a Car, who Picked Her up after School. He was Like 18 Years Old, or More. I Liked Debby Ray too, But She Just Walked around on Her Cloud Smiling, and Never even Noticed Me. Do you Remember : Mike Beard ?? I once Had a Fight , with Him, on The Basketball Courts, of PSJH, and I Beat Him up, But then He Gave Up, and I Turned My Back, and walked away, and He Hit Me, From Behind, and Busted My Lip. I Had to get Stitches, that night, at My Doctors Office. I Should of Went after Him, But I never Did. I Knew I Could Beat Him, Face To Face, I Did, So what was The Use ?? Marcia, DR. Bowles, Besides Being A Fat Blimp, was A Sarcastic Old Grouch !!!! He Gave Me F's, or Zero's , For The Day, all The Time, in His 7th Grade Auditorium T. V. Science Class . I Laughed at Him, inside, But Really Detested Him. MR. Tupler, The Art Teacher, was Real Nice, and Coach Harrison, was Too, at Miami Springs JR. High. I Had A Big Crush, on My 7th Grade English Teacher there: Miss Carol Dotson. And at Palm Springs JR. High: Some of My Favorite Teachers, were : Coach Holcomb, Coach Miller, Coach Mulchek, MR. Sherron, MR. Spinks, Guidance Counseler,- MR. Dietrick, and Miss Dickson. I Loved our Dances, at Palm Springs JR. High, and I always Went to Them, and Enjoyed Myself !!!!! At The Friday Night Dances, I Remember : They Had Bands Playing Live Music, Color Lights, and A Big Punch Bowl, of Like Wedding Punch. And Coach Sam Griner, He was : The Best: A Very Super Nice Man, and A Great P. E. Coach, and Teacher, and I'm Sure a Super Swimming Coach. I Knew Him, at Hialeah Elementary, when I was there, so was He, and Then in 10th Grade, at Hialeah High, I was in His P. E. Class again. I Regret now: That I Didn't Go out for The Hialeah High Swimming team, in 10th Grade, when Coach Griner Told Me Too. I was a Real Fast Free Style Swimmer always. I Can Still Swim, Real Fast. I Learned to Swim, Real Young, Like 4 Years Old, My Dad Taught Me, and I Always Liked to Swim, and was Fast. I've Saved 4 Lives, in The water, and that Feels Good, and Makes Me Proud, of My self. I was Glad then, that I was a Good Swimmer, and there, when they needed My Help. I know Lynn Morgan, went to Twin Lakes Elementary, Did You ?? I went To Faith Lutheran Kindergarten, on Hialeah Drive, and Hialeah Elementary, Did You ???? I Skated at Rustic Roller Rink, and Hialeah Roller Rink, Did You ??? I was always A Great Skater Too, and Loved Going Skating. And as a Kid, up until 12 years old, I had, and Drove Go Karts. The Last one I Had was a Racing Go Kart, called The X- Terminator, and it was Gold in Color, and Had A Fast Chainsaw Engine. Robbin, you do have a lot of memories, me... not as much. It has been a long time since I was in Hialeah, and to be honest, it actually wasn't my best time. However, I do remember a lot of the same kids, teachers and places that you mentioned. I really liked Mrs. Shuker, my English teacher. She made an impression. And at Miami Springs Jr, who could forget Dr. Bowles! A biiiigggg guy indeed! I also really liked Coach Griner. He was a very dynamic swim coach, but he moved to Winter Park before I got to know him well. I think a lot of people have known each other since they were very little children. For instance, I've known a few from kindergarten, like Lynn Morgan, and have known Debbie Ray since 2nd grade. Many thanks to Don Boyd for this site. Marcia, I Lived The First 13 Years, 1 Block from Hialeah Lanes Bowling Alley, on East 6th Lane. I went all 6 Years, at Hialeah Elementary School, and Miami Springs JR. High, From : Sept. of 1963 To Jan. of 1964, at which time: My Family Moved to A Bigger House, on a Lake, on West 12th Avenue,- Lake Lawrence North, and I then Transferred into Palm Springs JR. High . I Don't Remember you, From East Hialeah, or Miami Springs JR. High, But I Remember You From Palm Springs JR. High, and I think we Had Classes Together. I Remember : Debbie Portner, and Her Dad : Paul, A Mailman. They Lived on West 14th Avenue, not Far From Me. I Still Live in The Same House, only I am The Homeowner Now. My Parents Both Passed away: Years Ago. I Live in Front Of Mc Donald Park. When I First Got To Palm Springs JR. High, Lynn Morgan, Caught My Eye, and I was Crazy About Her, But She Didn't Care About Me, She Went Steady with Tommy Morrison. I was A Champion Shot Puter, even though I was a Tall Skinny Kid, not a Double Wide , Like Most Shot Puters. And I Played Baseball : T- League , at 5 Years Old, at Babcock Park, and 13- 14 At Sparks Park, and 16 - 18, at Sparks Park. I Am A U. S. Army Vietnam Veteran. I was a Combat Engineer. Hi Robbin. Wow, I think I do remember your name. We certainly did take the same path. I went to Miami Springs Jr. in 7th grade, then went to Palm Springs Jr for 8th and 9th, then on to Hialeah High. I didn't know the boys you hung around with, but did know some of the girls: Julie Wollack, Mary Ann Savage and Lynn Morgan. I still keep in touch with Lynn and her husband. I was on the Hialeah swim team and took a lot of art classes. Junior high was sort of a lost era for me, but my friends then were Debby Portner, Candy Parks, Vickie Bushnell, Maria Gonzalez. Did you know Bill Cousins? I was walking down a busy street near Times Square in NYC, and passed a familiar looking guy, turned around to look again just as he did the same thing... Bill Cousins right there in the Big Apple. Small world, right? I remember Bill in junior high math class laughing and crawling on the floor down the aisle with our teacher (can't remember her name) hitting him on the back with a stick. Ah, those were the days, or maybe, those were the daze!

Hi Bill. I'm Marcia Bujold. Do we know each other from Palm Springs Jr. or Hialeah High? Your name is very familiar. I lived on 112 Terrace when I was very young, from about 1954 to 1960, and moved to Miami Springs for awhile. It was a nice place to grow up, wasn't it? The neighborhood was brand spanking new when I was there. Across the street, houses were just going up. I have vivid memories of ball and chain demolitions, a farmhouse burning down, cows out north of the canal at 68th, swimming in the newly dug lakes, and kids playing on partially built homes. I moved back to West 69th Place in 1966, I think. I went to Twin Lakes Elementary in 1st and 2nd grades.

Hello Visitor: I remember some of these places well, especially along Red Road. Every day one the way to Henry H. Filer Jr. High I would walk from the intersection of Okeechobee Road & Red Road all the way up to Filer. I would stop by every phone booth and check for left over change. One day there were several dollars in coins in the change slot. I was able to but a yoyo in the 7-11 to blend in with the other kids. Yoyo's were going through a fad type of craze at the time and everyone had to have one. My older brother was walking home one day from Filer with a friend and as they passed the Red Road lounge, someone they heard gunfire and someone was shot there. They ran for their lives. Thanks for sharing Hialeah memories. This is the place for it.

Gail Kennedy, Did you skate at Hialeah Roller Rink ? I went skating there all the time, in the 60's. I did not go to Mae M. Walters, or Filer though. I, too, remember the cows loose from the Meat Packers, off Red Road, and the Awful Stink, on Red Road, when you went by from 28th street to 23rd street, very unpleasant. Have A Nice Day.

Hello, Please let me introduce myself. I grew up in Hialeah, in the early 50's, and lived both in East Hialeah, and West Hialeah. And I still reside in Hialeah. I've seen a lot of growth and changes here , over the years. Some of the changes have been good some of them not so good. I went to public schools in Hialeah, and was on many sports teams. Most all of my old friends moved away, or passed away . So here I am by myself in The City Of Progress years and years later not having any friends anymore. Growing up in Hialeah was mostly good for me and I have a lot of memories. Most of the old familiar places I remember as a kid are gone but they are etched in my mind forever. It is painful to remember some places that are gone and some that are still standing are in bad disrepair. But more or less Hialeah is the same as it was in my childhood, only more developed. So Long for now.

I may have been Lula Lee's neighbor. We lived at 309 W 33rd St from 1951 until 1963. I went to Mae M. Walters and my brother went to Filer. When I see him I'll ask him about the anthem. We used to have an on-going softball game going on one of the side streets, but can't recall now. I remember cars going into the canal every once in awhile on Red Road. Also remember the slaughter house and the cows that used to escape every now and then. Good memories of selling lemonade to the people backed up on our street waiting to get into Hialeah Race Track.

Also went to the Pizza Palace and Lums on 49th Street a lot. Shopping was done at Murphy's, Neisner and Grand Union, also on 49th St. Ohhh those were the days! By chance, is there anyone out there that remembers the school anthem from Filer Junior High? I've tried to search the internet and cannot find it. John -- you're about four years younger than me, but I can certainly relate to a lot of your experiences growing up in Hialeah at that time. I lived with my parents, grandparents and a sister on E. 4th Avenue across from Hialeah High. My back yard was full of different fruit trees a well, and I went to junior high during the time of integration. I had relatives who belonged to the St. John parish, so I attended many weddings, baptisms and funeral memorial services there. I have many wonderful memories of growing up in Hialeah. let me give you a basic family history i grew up in my grandparents home with my mother and father my father being from massachusetts and a vietnam veteran my grandparents didnt want us living up north i get the feeling they wanted me and my brother here with them so they let us live with them my gradnparents moved to hialeah in the 1940s purchasing the home brand new at 721 ne 1st place where they lived their lives out my grandfather was a gardener at hialeah race track for many years his name was eddy thompson his wife was marie rawls thompson my aunt ruth tinsman was involved with south florida politics for many many years as well a devout democrat my aunt patty worked for fpl for many many years my grandfather came from some notoriety as being the only man in america that could speak english spanish and maya indian fluently his father being hebert h thompson the man that discovered the maya city of chichen itza in the yucatan of mexico i remember once as a young boy a man named andre lacomb came to our house as some kind of reporter to speak to my grandfather about his maya heritage

Obituary for Jan Frederic Peters, Hialeah High Class of 1966: PETERS, JAN FREDERIC, 60, died on June 1, 2009. Born in Miami, he graduated from Hialeah High School in 1966. He was career U.S. Army, seeing combat in Vietnam and the 1st Gulf War. He had a second career with the Florida Dept. of Corrections. Jan has been described by many as a great friend and a good guy. Jan loved his children. Survivors are his mother, Valda, of Sebring; his brother, Michael (Margie) of Tallahassee; his children of German; 1 granddaughter of Germany, his nephews, and his life-long friend, Mike O' Steen of Hialeah. I grew up in Hialeah but left when I graduated HHS in 1975. I am wracking my brain trying to remember the name of a bar on the the Palm Avenue side of the race track. I had a job cleaning this place when I was in high school. We used to clean it early in the morning for the two or so hours a day it was closed. In response to the post from John Boger, I did some asking around about a POW camp on E 25th or NW 79th Street and got these responses. My husband and his older sister who grew up in Opa-locka both said their parents always said there had been a POW camp where the Bell Haven trailer park was located. I also asked a friend of my mother's who grew up in East Hialeah and would have been about 10 when the war ended. She also said there had been a POW camp at the Bell Haven location. Her husband who grew up in Allapattah confirmed. My mother's friend said the Coast Guard radio tower was located where Hialeah Hospital is now. Maybe this info will spark someone else's memory as well.

We used to ride to the U-totem on Red Rd. and 65th to get sodas, and just behind the U-totem a guy named Bill Ellis, and his Son Dale lived. They had a bunch of tricked out bikes and Bill had one arm that was cut-off in an airboat accident. I was wondering if you guys remember an old Cuban ice cream man named Nelson, he had a bad neck and drove really fast i remember.

I visit friends often in Hialeah, and I've noticed that no matter where I drive in Dade County, City of Hialeah has the most impressive looking mango trees you'll see anywhere. Just driving down LeJeune Road from 49th Street to the airport I saw many . . . and one that sticks out in my mind is located on an empty lot just south of the M &M Liquor Store on the SE section of LeJeune. Not too long ago I stopped at Carvel on 49th and E. 4th Avenue, just for old times sake, and had a vanilla swirl cone. I think that place has to be one of the most "unchanged" places left in Hialeah. I lived on E 4th Avenue and would see Carvel when stepping out of the front door of my home every day. The bus driver my sister and I had during elementary and junior high would drop the kids off every Wednesday after school during two-for-one ice-cream sundays.

I had an old Volvo 344 that burned oil and I would always have a case or two in the trunk that I bought either from Zayre or Eagle Army-Navy because it was even cheaper by the case. I'd check the oil occasionally and add as necessary but sometimes I'd forget and when the engine started knocking I'd add the oil. One night in late '65 or early '66 four of us went out to the midnights on Krome via Okeechobee and I slipped in between two semi's where 103rd Street met Okeechobee to turn right. It pissed the semi behind us off and he blew his horn repeatedly and gave us the lights and of course 4 birds were shot out the windows in retort as we made the right onto Okeechobee. I passed the first semi on Okeechobee thinking we had it made and then we noticed that the second semi passed the first too. Then he turned off all his lights and we couldn't see him on a moonless night except a dark shadow in front of the other semi's lights which fell far behind us with time. We were doing 70 or 80 mph and couldn't see him at all and when he turned his headlights on he was three feet off our back bumper scaring the hell out of us. We flew through Pennsuco with him right on our ass blowing his loud as hell horn. I remember thinking "where in the hell is the FHP when you need them? They're always there when you screw up!" I was hoping to make the left turn onto Krome without him killing us and the engine started knocking. We couldn't pull over because of the madman behind us. I sped up right before Krome to put a gap between him and us and we flew around the curve to pull over and the semi madman continued straight on US27 blowing his horn and yelling stuff at us. We popped the hood and the engine was glowing red in the total darkness, like red hot charcoal on a grill. We let the engine cool down, added cans of oil from the trunk, and limped home at 25 or 30mph but I had blown a rod which was expensive as hell to get repaired. Oh to be young and stupid again..... I knew a guy that drove a Hillman. He never changed the oil because "Oil never wears out" and used 1/2 regular gas and 1/2 kerosene to save money. Back then kerosene was around 15 cents a gallon and cheap regular gas was probably around 27 cents or so. You could buy oil at Zayre's for 19 cents a quart back then. The good thing was that the Hillman smoked so bad that there was never a mosquito within 100 yards of it. If he had a tire that was worn on only one side he would turn the tire around so the tread would be on the outside and did that with a pair of tire irons himself to save money. Back in the day, it was just a part of getting caught. You had the right to be P.O.ed, but I must confess that every time that I got a whack that I deserved it. One time a bunch of us got lined up in a mass Black Magic "execution" for smoking on the way to the pool. We had to get wet before the Magic would be administered and at that time we swam in our gym shorts. That whack really stung. But after class ended, the coach's VW bug ended up cross-ways in the middle of Palm Avenue. I got "Black Magic" one time from coach Halstead for holding a locker combination lock up to my ear and turning the tumblers while bored sitting in the locker room during a thunderstorm. He hit the ceiling with the end of it at the peak of its upswing/downswing before it impacted my butt knocking me three feet forward and leaving bruises on me for at least a week. I wanted to kill the SOB for that because I wasn't trying to break into the locker. My father would have kicked his ass somewhere if I had told him but I kept quiet to keep the peace. #$@#$#$ !! That's the first I've seen on the grocery store turning into Municipal Auditorium; I always thought it was built as the auditorium because it was that when we moved out to Hialeah in 1957. I hope some older-timer can provide us with more information. Don

Between Marty and Manocarz, I believe we have more expertise in the local history of that industry than one can imagine. A lot of us went to school with the Hanks' family in Hialeah. I was in class with Diane at Twin Lakes Elem. and Palm Springs Jr. High. I used jokingly tease Scott about his vocation. They were very nice people. Hialeah had many fine people back in the day and I relish the days of growing up there. Marty mentioned the contracts with the cities, does Westbrook still have the wrecker service contract in Hialeah ? I had a couple of instances where I had the pleasure of dealing with the customer relations department at Westbrook. I'm sure they had many happy and satisfied customers over the years. The guest that has recently posted has a familiar writing style. Must be from some book I have read in the past. It is good to hear from that guest again. John

I remember that everyone made sure to have all cars match in color and when they went down the road you knew who they were just by their color. Any info will be appreciated. Marty 22-Feb-2009 22:25 (copied from the previous Hialeah comments gallery): I was doing a search on Reed-Gautier Funeral Home and saw an earlier comment here about seeing a Reed ambulance in Hialeah. I interned at Reed-Gautier in the 60's and my uncle owned a funeral home in NC, so ambulances were a big deal in my teens. I even drove one of Reed's cadillacs to school from time to time in my senior year at Coral Park. Carl Slade had those great looking maroon ambulances that we were jealous of because they looked so good, and had so many neat lights on them. Slade had a contract with the City of Hialeah for ambulance service until the 70's when funeral homes got out of the business. Back then Philbrick (light green) covered Coral Gables, Reed-Gautier (all white or white with blue roof), Bess (pink) covered Miami, Riverside (red with white roof) covered Miami Beach, Reid-Lowe (all black) also worked in Hialeah and the Springs), Branam (all black) covered Homestead and Peden (all white) was on Bird Road, and Walsh and Wood (all white) was on Miami Beach. All, incuding Eastern Ambulance, could cover the entire county. Back then Eastern was the only non-funeral home service, and gradually became the sole provider. The colorful funeral home ambulances came to an end when in the 70's federal guidelines were established for training, certification, size (rise of the "box") and color (orange and white).

All Hialeaheans have been influenced in some way by this man and his family. Their vision and development in Miami Lakes was truly unique and was very revolutionary. Very few planners anywhere get an opportunity to design a community like this. First of all, there was very little or no debt on the land. This allowed the planners the luxury of time. They were able to masterplan this area and turn it into a self-contained village complete with options for living, working, shopping, dining, and entertainment. Today this is called a neo traditional mixed use development. This style of development is what planners are still seeking, hence the vision of Mr. Graham and his associates way back in the 60's.These pioneers laid the groundwork for the environment that so many still enjoy today. Miami Lakes is still a vibrant and growing community. God Bless Mr. Bill Graham and my condolences to his family.

S. Senator Bob Graham, passed away last Saturday. Below is his obituary from the Miami Herald. It is strange that there have been no news stories on his death in the Herald or on the TV news shows. Graham, William Anson "Bill" GRAHAM, WILLIAM "BILL" ANSON, longtime South Florida community leader and former chairman of The Graham Companies which developed the 46-year-old community of Miami Lakes, passed away January 17th. He was 84. Graham was born February 7, 1924, to Ernest R and Florence Graham, on a houseboat moored at the edge of the Miami Canal at a sugar plantation in the Florida Everglades. His birth was the catalyst for building the famous old coral rock house at Pennsuco which, despite hurricanes, floods and Glades fires, still stands today and remains a place of historical interest. He attended Miami schools, graduating from Miami High School in 1942. He received a B.A. from the University of Florida in 1949 with a major in Economics and Political Science, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his senior year. Graham's education was interrupted by World War II when he served three and one-half years in the Army Air Corps. He was a radar officer on a B-29 in the Pacific Theater of Operations. After the war he continued his love of flying, piloting his personal plane throughout the country. Together with his two brothers (the late Philip Graham, publisher of The Washington Post and Newsweek), and Bob, (former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator), and in collaboration with Lester Collins, grandson of Miami Beach developer John S. Collins, Bill Graham pioneered the master-planned community of Miami Lakes, Florida's first "new town" which opened in 1962. As a result of sound land planning, conservative financial management and careful construction timetables, the community of Miami Lakes became nationally recognized as a successful prototype. Today, the community, now incorporated as the Town of Miami Lakes, is home to more than 27,000 residents, many of whom are numbered in the nearly 10,000 employee-base of Miami Lakes businesses. Miami Lakes is a totally-integrated combination of single family homes, townhome villas, apartments, condominiums, hotels, resort facilities, shopping centers, office & industrial buildings, parks, lakes, schools, churches and other public services. Through his brother Phil's influence as publisher of The Washington Post, Bill Graham was able to get 2000 acres of the former World War II military airport (now Opa-locka Airport), deeded to Miami-Dade County for future development of Amelia Earhart Park. Following World War II, Bill Graham established a registered Angus herd, and in the early 1950's, began performance testing to supply bulls for the Graham's large commercial herd on what is now Miami Lakes and Venus, in middle Florida. He was also an active leader in local and state community and agricultural organiz ations for many years including serving as president of the Dade County Cattlemen's Association, the Florida Dairy Association, the Independent Dairy Farmer's Association, and as a board member of Performance Registry International. Graham was also on the board of directors of the Hialeah Chamber of Commerce, WPBT (Channel 2) and served on the Dade County Charter. Review Board, the Metropolitan Dade County Transit Authority, Miami Springs Zoning Board and was one of the original twelve members of the Non Group. Graham worked quietly behind the scene, in the community he loved. He contributed to countless causes and enjoyed giving his time and financial support to talented youth who came from disadvantaged backgrounds. In 1945, Bill Graham married Patricia Jane Culbertson of Minneapolis, Minnesota. They have five children - Sandra Younts, William E. The restaurant has been closed for a couple of years due to a fire in the kitchen. I believe today was the grand opening and a buddy of mine had lunch there today and spoke to Wayne who is also a fan of this site. The Miami Herald is supposed to do an article in a day or two about the reopening. My buddy says: "Castle burgers are 99 cents each with a 6-pack going for $4.99. Yes, they have Birch beer (from a Coca Cola brand, Fanta). They have breakfast fare, but I don't think there were any honeybuns on the menu." I'll be checking it out one of these days in the near future so I can add some photos of it to the site.

Bags of peanuts, pop corn and snow cones were the fair of the day. May's Cycle shop brings back fond memories too. My dad one Christmas bought all four of us kids brand new Schwinns. Several years ago I bought a brand new red and white old school bike to celebrate my love of riding. As for the fine girls upstairs, before my time. However, rumors told of that place and evil things going on there. The girls were called wicked city girls. Who knows? :)

They had great food down stairs and fine women upstairs. At least that is what us kids were told and ordered never to be caught up there. We could often see the gentlemen going up the outside stair steps without ever having entered the restaurant doors downstairs at all. I'm not sure, but someone once told me that the building was the north half of a former old Hotel that had burnt down years before. The old Lindsay Lumber Company was just behind there and down at the Palm Ave. end was the Western Auto. Also another hangout for kids was May's Cycle Shop. Originally it was located in one of the store fronts between the Hialeah Shoe Shop and King's Radio Shop, later he moved to a new and larger building just west of Palm Ave. on 9th St. I suppose the old Golden Earrings is gone from up on 79th St just a few steps east of the track. For a short while in the mid 60's I went back to Hialeah and played music in a little country band at a couple of the clubs like the old Club 17 at NW 17th Ave and 17th St., Kings Lounge on Red Road, the American Legion or VFW out by the Hialeah Speedway, The Black Angus on 49th St. in Palm Springs as well as the Golden Earrings. Did you ever skate at the Rustic Roller Rink? How about that Benny Babcock Park? My mother was a city Librarian at the branch library there on 4th Ave near the Catholic church and school and we would go play ball at the park. My granddad also took us to watch ball games there. A lot of times teams from in the old Negro League played there. Man those were real games to watch. And those one way gates were at the doors to the drug store at Essex Village Shopping Center as well. Our kid brother would always go thru them the wrong way and as he aged I don't think he realized that he was getting taller. One day he took off at a fast trot to beat us into the store and needless to say as he went thru the gate he didn't duck. The bar wouldn't bend or go in reverse so he wound up with the biggest damn pump knot on his forehead you ever did see. He got laid out cold in the floor. The cashiers were almost scared to death that he had seriously gotten hurt and called for a cop to come check him out. Neither us or our mother had paid any attention to his antics and really didn't think he was hurt very bad. By the time the cop came, he was up and the shopping experience was done and over with. For a long time after that event we were embarrassed to go there for what he had done. Later, John B

I think the facilities there later became a part of the Hialeah Water Works. Also, does anyone have any of the old shims that were used to tighten the old wooden water main that ran from Hialeah and on down to Key West?

For those who haven't clicked on it, I'm certain you'll enjoy it. I especially enjoyed reading about how the underground tunnels at Hialeah Race Track served as hurricane shelter for Hialeah residents during the 1926 hurricane. According to Mrs. Farrell Taylor, the City of Hialeah gave a plot of land (free) to every Hialeah soldier who came back from WWII so that he could build his home. It was the only city in the country that did something like that.

Sofia 13-Jan-2009 15:00 (copied from the previous Hialeah comments gallery): One of the fondest memories I have of growing up in Hialeah was taking driving lessons from my dad at the parking area of Hialeah Race track that's located on the north side of 32nd Street, just west of East 4th Avenue behind a masonic lodge. He'd get me up at 7:00 a.m. on Sundays when I was about 14 years old and I'd drive around in circles in that space in his white Dodge Dart. That's one of the few areas that still looks pretty much the same. Even the tall Australian pine trees are still there.

I had never heard of the POW camp that's amazing. I know a lot of the hotels including the Fountainbleau were used to house our troops during the war. My Father grew up in Allapattah and was in the Marine Corp in 47 when the area flooded. He has told me many stories of driving over to Hialeah and hanging out at Mother Hubbards and even had the police chasing him for speeding and rolling his car over on dirt roads at Gratigny and LeJeune. My Grandmother lived over in the Melrose area and we would visit all the time from Hialeah. Every Saturday I was over there mowing her grass. That area has changed even more than Hialeah and that is saying a whole lot. I would love to hear more of your stories of the good old days. My Great Grandfather worked for Seaboard Railroad and helped build the bridges through the Carolinas and Georgia to Miami and that is how our clan ended up down there. He was quite a guy, the stuff legends are made of. That was one tough generation. Nice hearing from you John. His rig was an old Caddy with the back end cut out and a large steel cage built on and he kept a black bear in it and during the winter months for all of the tourists he would take out on a chain and the bear did a few tricks. I think that was his only source of income. He got a lot of tips from the folks that had a dollar left after the races had all ran. That was in the days when on Saturdays besides the Westerns serials there were yoyo contests and some weeks there were real champion yoyo artists there demonstrating for Duncan and maybe other companies. A guy whose last name was Oakerson was the owner/operator. Some real good times were had in the dark sections of the place if you know what I mean. John

My dad had gotten a job at PAA right after they moved to 36th Street from Biscayne Bay and the sea plane days, so to go to work was a lot closer than the drive from Hollywood. I'd be glad to try and put together some info for you from my best memory. The radio station was a broadcast radio to the ships at sea as best as I recall. It was what was called 'long wave' broadcast. The antennas were long wires stretched from one high pole to another in many different directions and the frequencies used were just above the AM broadcast band widths somewhere between what 'HAM' Radio operators called the 160 and the 80 meter bands. As to the content of the broadcasts, I don't have knowledge. I don't know whether you knew or realized about the POW's, but 99 percent of them were not threats to our country or local citizenry. So other than a few guards around, they just were confined behind a fence up in that same area. They had tents and the Army had field kitchens from where they fed the prisoners. I'm not sure but I was told later on that some of the Hialeah German or Italian families descended from some of those prisoners who were released, went home and then returned to that area to live. How many of your correspondents on this comment page went to school in an Army Duck? During the flood of 47 we were picked up at our front door and rode the Duck all the way to Melrose over in Allapattah just south of 36th Street and around 32nd Ave area. That was a real hoot for all of kids. My dad had an old 38 Plymouth sedan at the time and had rigged an exhaust extention that went up the side of the car body, spray painted all of the electrical parts under the hood and disonnected the fan blade belt so he could maneuver the circle in Miami Springs to go to work. The water there was almost to the top of the old wall around the circle in the early days of the flood. There were other places he needed his adapted auto to get around and through as well. Some of the places in West Hialeah were waist deep. I recall the many days of the filling of sand bags to raise the elevation of Red Road and the pumping of the water from the inside to the outside of the new 'dike'. Later on Red Road was just made over top of all of those sand bags. For a lot of years afterwards you could still catch glimpses of the those bags whenever repairs had to be made on the road. We ate a lot of fish during that time and for weeks afterwards. You could just reach down and pick them up by the gills from in the shallow pools they had gotten caught in after escaping from the canal. There were huge bass and plenty of catfish for all. On the few high ground spots in our back yard and the lots behind our house there were rattle snakes as big around as your upper arms and as long as your legs. We learned how to eat them too. Among the delicacies that went well with the fish and the snakes were the blooms of the elder berries. Man, we ate real good and a lot cheaper than some of our transplanted yankee neighbors who turned their noses up at our resourcefulness. Oh well, maybe I have rambled on here to much so I think maybe I better save some of this for much later. I guess I should write a book about growing up down there and some of the real good old days when a boy and his friends could have real fun and got to learn about things from the experiences they had. Or the old POW camp they had there during the war? They used tounload the prisoners off a boat at the lower end of 6th Ave and then march them all the way up to the camp. Next to our house at that time was an empty lot where they got their first rest stop. As kids we used to go out and talk with them and take out sandwiches for them at noon. They were a mix of Tallies and Krauts. My dad used to bag a wild turkey now and then in the fields next to our house. We were on the edge of civilization as kids. John

When I was at Hialeah Junior High in the mid seventies, there were a lot of fights between the black students and the white/hispanic students because the black students were not happy about being bussed to Hialeah and away from their neighborhoods and vice versa. The purpose behind the bussing was to create harmonious racial integration, but it ended up making a lot of students unhappy and resentful, causing many after-school fights.

I haven't seen him in 30+ years and I had totally forgotten about his family and him being involved in constructing numerous homes and a shopping center in Hialeah, notably the Sun Tan Village area and the Sun Tan Village Shopping Center. After Hialeah they moved down to the south end of the county and built numerous developments down there. You had the right to be P.O.ed, but I must confess that every time that I got a whack that I deserved it. One time a bunch of us got lined up in a mass Black Magic "execution" for smoking on the way to the pool. We had to get wet before the Magic would be administered and at that time we swam in our gym shorts. That whack really stung. But after class ended, the coach's VW bug ended up cross-ways in the middle of Palm Avenue. I got "Black Magic" one time from coach Halstead for holding a locker combination lock up to my ear and turning the tumblers while bored sitting in the locker room during a thunderstorm. He hit the ceiling with the end of it at the peak of its upswing/downswing before it impacted my butt knocking me three feet forward and leaving bruises on me for at least a week. I wanted to kill the SOB for that because I wasn't trying to break into the locker. My father would have kicked his ass somewhere if I had told him but I kept quiet to keep the peace. #$@#$#$ !! That's the first I've seen on the grocery store turning into Municipal Auditorium; I always thought it was built as the auditorium because it was that when we moved out to Hialeah in 1957. I remember that everyone made sure to have all cars match in color and when they went down the road you knew who they were just by their color. Any info will be appreciated. I interned at Reed-Gautier in the 60's and my uncle owned a funeral home in NC, so ambulances were a big deal in my teens. I even drove one of Reed's cadillacs to school from time to time in my senior year at Coral Park. Carl Slade had those great looking maroon ambulances that we were jealous of because they looked so good, and had so many neat lights on them. Slade had a contract with the City of Hialeah for ambulance service until the 70's when funeral homes got out of the business. Back then Philbrick (light green) covered Coral Gables, Reed-Gautier (all white or white with blue roof), Bess (pink) covered Miami, Riverside (red with white roof) covered Miami Beach, Reid-Lowe (all black) also worked in Hialeah and the Springs), Branam (all black) covered Homestead and Peden (all white) was on Bird Road, and Walsh and Wood (all white) was on Miami Beach. All, incuding Eastern Ambulance, could cover the entire county. Back then Eastern was the only non-funeral home service, and gradually became the sole provider. All Hialeaheans have been influenced in some way by this man and his family. Their vision and development in Miami Lakes was truly unique and was very revolutionary. Very few planners anywhere get an opportunity to design a community like this. First of all, there was very little or no debt on the land. This allowed the planners the luxury of time. They were able to masterplan this area and turn it into a self-contained village complete with options for living, working, shopping, dining, and entertainment. Today this is called a neo traditional mixed use development. This style of development is what planners are still seeking, hence the vision of Mr. Graham and his associates way back in the 60's.These pioneers laid the groundwork for the environment that so many still enjoy today. Miami Lakes is still a vibrant and growing community. S. Senator Bob Graham, passed away last Saturday. Below is his obituary from the Miami Herald. It is strange that there have been no news stories on his death in the Herald or on the TV news shows. Graham, William Anson "Bill" GRAHAM, WILLIAM "BILL" ANSON, longtime South Florida community leader and former chairman of The Graham Companies which developed the 46-year-old community of Miami Lakes, passed away January 17th. He was 84. Graham was born February 7, 1924, to Ernest R and Florence Graham, on a houseboat moored at the edge of the Miami Canal at a sugar plantation in the Florida Everglades. His birth was the catalyst for building the famous old coral rock house at Pennsuco which, despite hurricanes, floods and Glades fires, still stands today and remains a place of historical interest. He attended Miami schools, graduating from Miami High School in 1942. He received a B.A. from the University of Florida in 1949 with a major in Economics and Political Science, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his senior year. Graham's education was interrupted by World War II when he served three and one-half years in the Army Air Corps. He was a radar officer on a B-29 in the Pacific Theater of Operations. After the war he continued his love of flying, piloting his personal plane throughout the country. Together with his two brothers (the late Philip Graham, publisher of The Washington Post and Newsweek), and Bob, (former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator), and in collaboration with Lester Collins, grandson of Miami Beach developer John S. Collins, Bill Graham pioneered the master-planned community of Miami Lakes, Florida's first "new town" which opened in 1962. As a result of sound land planning, conservative financial management and careful construction timetables, the community of Miami Lakes became nationally recognized as a successful prototype. Today, the community, now incorporated as the Town of Miami Lakes, is home to more than 27,000 residents, many of whom are numbered in the nearly 10,000 employee-base of Miami Lakes businesses. Miami Lakes is a totally-integrated combination of single family homes, townhome villas, apartments, condominiums, hotels, resort facilities, shopping centers, office & industrial buildings, parks, lakes, schools, churches and other public services. The restaurant has been closed for a couple of years due to a fire in the kitchen. I believe today was the grand opening and a buddy of mine had lunch there today and spoke to Wayne who is also a fan of this site. The Miami Herald is supposed to do an article in a day or two about the reopening. My buddy says: "Castle burgers are 99 cents each with a 6-pack going for $4.99. Yes, they have Birch beer (from a Coca Cola brand, Fanta). They have breakfast fare, but I don't think there were any honeybuns on the menu." I'll be checking it out one of these days in the near future so I can add some photos of it to the site. Bags of peanuts, pop corn and snow cones were the fair of the day. May's Cycle shop brings back fond memories too. My dad one Christmas bought all four of us kids brand new Schwinns. Several years ago I bought a brand new red and white old school bike to celebrate my love of riding. As for the fine girls upstairs, before my time. However, rumors told of that place and evil things going on there. The girls were called wicked city girls. They had great food down stairs and fine women upstairs. At least that is what us kids were told and ordered never to be caught up there. We could often see the gentlemen going up the outside stairsteps without ever having entered the restautrant doors downstairs at all. I'm not sure, but someone once told me that the building was the north half of a former old Hotel that had burnt down years before. The old Lindsay Lumber Company was just behind there and down at the Palm Ave. end was the Western Auto. Also another hangout for kids was May's Cycle Shop. Originally it was located in one of the store fronts between the Hialeah Shoe Shop and King's Radio Shop, later he moved to a new and larger building just west of Palm Ave. on 9th St. I suppose the old Golden Earrings is gone from up on 79th St just a few steps east of the track. For a short while in the mid 60's I went back to Hialeah and played music in a little country band at a couple of the clubs like the old Club 17 at NW 17th Ave and 17th St., Kings Lounge on Red Road, the American Legion or VFW out by the Hialeah Speedway, The Black Angus on 49th St. in Palm Springs as well as the Golden Earrings. Did you ever skate at the Rustic Roller Rink? How about that Benny Babcock Park? My mother was a city Librarian at the branch library there on 4th Ave near the Catholic church and school and we would go play ball at the park. My granddad also took us to watch ball games there. A lot of times teams from in the old Negro League played there. Man those were real games to watch. And those one way gates were at the doors to the drug store at Essex Village Shopping Center as well. Our kid brother would always go thru them the wrong way and as he aged I don't think he realized that he was getting taller. One day he took off at a fast trot to beat us into the store and needless to say as he went thru the gate he didn't duck. The bar wouldn't bend or go in reverse so he wound up with the biggest damn pumpknot on his forehead you ever did see. He got laid out cold in the floor. The cashiers were almost scared to death that he had seriously gotten hurt and called for a cop to come check him out. Neither us or our mother had paid any attention to his antics and really didn't think he was hurt very bad. By the time the cop came, he was up and the shopping experience was done and over with. For a long time after that event we were embarrassed to go there for what he had done. For those who haven't clicked on it, I'm certain you'll enjoy it. I especially enjoyed reading about how the underground tunnels at Hialeah Race Track served as hurricane shelter for Hialeah residents during the 1926 hurricane. According to Mrs. Farrell Taylor, the City of Hialeah gave a plot of land (free) to every Hialeah soldier who came back from WWII so that he could build his home. It was the only city in the country that did something like that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sofia 13-Jan-2009 15:00 One of the fondest memories I have of growing up in Hialeah was taking driving lessons from my dad at the parking area of Hialeah Race track that's located on the north side of 32nd Street, just west of East 4th Avenue behind a masonic lodge. He'd get me up at 7:00 a.m. on Sundays when I was about 14 years old and I'd drive around in circles in that space in his white Dodge Dart. That's one of the few areas that still looks pretty much the same. His rig was an old Caddy with the back end cut out and a large steel cage built on and he kept a black bear in it and during the winter months for all of the tourists he would take out on a chain and the bear did a few tricks. I think that was his only source of income. He got a lot of tips from the folks that had a dollar left after the races had all ran. My dad gave me my birth stone ring from there. Someone mentioned Fireman's hall and many great memories came flooding back. I used to travel with a group of guys (Charlie Self, Jeff Schmidt, Mike Stokes (KIA Nam), Richard Carty) that traveled the dance circuit every weekend. Friday Fireman's (The Shags) Saturday the Place and also the World (Wayne Cochran and the CC Riders) and Sunday Municipal. When I was at Hialeah Junior High in the mid seventies, there were a lot of fights between the black students and the white/hispanic students because the black students were not happy about being bussed to Hialeah and away from their neighborhoods and vice versa. The purpose behind the bussing was to create harmonious racial integration, but it ended up making a lot of students unhappy and resentful, causing many after-school fights. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
