1957 - the south entrance of the Burdine's department store at 163rd Street Shopping Center

163rd Street Shopping Center, Dade County, Florida

The mall entrance (south side) level was the main floor but 2nd floor of the store. The first floor had entrances/exits at the parking lot level at the rear (north side) of the store. There was also a third floor and possibly a fourth floor (I can't remember).

Thank you to Jeff Levine for the following information: The Grand Opening of 163rd Street Shopping Center was on November 1, 1956. George Friedlander, founder of Food Fair Stores built a number of shopping centers with his real estate division.

Rumored to have been slated for NE 125th Street in North Miami, but rejected by a city not ready for the increased traffic and business growth, a parcel of former farm land - and an "island" of county property not subject to North Miami Beach taxation, was purchased by Friedlander, and everything came together into what was one of the most popular shopping venues until it's decline in the 1980's.

My first job was a stock boy for women's shoes on the second floor of Richard's Dept. Store at the west end of the mall in 1978. Spent thousands of happy hours roaming that mall for the first 25 years of my life. Too many great memories to tell here. Just a great place to grow up in the 60's and 70's.

I worked at this Burdine's 163 st shopping store, working there was a lot of fun, the store was very glamorous, every morning before the store opened they use to play "Young at Heart" by Frank Sinatra. The store Manager at the time was Mr Shanahan. Great memories.

I worked at Harmony Music Shop in the arcade shops in 1967-68. Lots of girls stopped there on their way to the beach. I was in heaven at 18 years old.

Can you sing the 163rd Street jingle? "G-i-a-n-t choice and value, every time you enter"
The local merchants feared the 163rd Street shopping center and actually tried to change the name of the street...

Those were the days...and now it's closed. It started to go down hill sometime after Adventura Mall was built. Anita Dee

Hey fellow native NMBer's!! Love the pictures of Burdines at 163street mall. I guess they didn't put the amusement rides (like the kiddie train) in the front of Burdines until the 60's. I was born in 1960 and lived down the street from there and rode those every time we went to the mall. My sister Connie worked at the restaurant at Walgreens next door and she made some delicious "black cows" for us. Of course we also loved the movie theater in the back. And how 'bout the "Arcade Shops"? I got into plenty of trouble as a teenager throughout that mall. LOL! Eileen Kraemer Howard

Those were the days for sure. Gosh how I miss Burdine's and Jordan Marsh.
