My family moved from NJ to Florida in 1953 when I was 3 years old, via a train with two suit cases. I went to South Hialeah Elementary from 1st grade to 6th grade. My first grade teacher was Miss Roberts, I believe. I vividly remember the school's Spanish architecture and the spiral stairway. I have had many dreams about that stairway. I walked to school until I was old enough to ride my bike. Does anyone remember the required bicycle safety course on the campus? If I remember correctly, each student had to, literally, ride their bike through the course, which was supervised by a PE teacher, while demonstrating control and hand signals. I went to Miami Springs Jr. High in eighth grade, and will never forget sitting in 8th grade history class the day President John Kennedy was killed. In 9th grade I had the option to attend Hialeah High, or the new Miami Springs High. That September I was a freshman going to a brand new, air conditioned, school! During my freshman year there was a contest to name the school's mascot and the school's colors. Miami Springs High became the Golden Hawks, our colors became Garnet and Gold. I have so many amazing memories growing up in south Florida in the 50's and 60's. My earliest memories are of riding the ponies at Dresels Dairy (sp), watching the jets land, with my father, west of the airport on Red Road. Later memories are of high school, surfing at south beach, the Crandon Park Zoo, the cutest lifeguards at Crandon Park beach, drive-in movies, Friday night cruising Collins Avenue with my best friend Janice in her Corvair, dancing at The Place at the North Miami Armory and listening to the local bands, The Still Life aka The Fugue, going to the World, sailing a 45ft boat on Biscayne Bay, beach parties, the Miami Dolphins, and hanging out in Coconut Grove. During those years one could actually see the ocean from Collins Avenue. I left Florida in the spring of 1976 and moved to Colorado, where my daughter was born. I've lived in Norway, Hawaii, Arizona, California, and I'm currently living in New Smyrna Beach, FL. Those teenage and young adult years are so very special to me, for example, wearing a bikini, driving a sports car, with the top down and my long hair blowing in the wind. Now, I'm experiencing FL through the eyes of a mature woman who no longer wears a bikini. Thank you, Don Boyd, for creating this web site and for sharing your amazing photos. I've had a surreal afternoon and a blast from the past viewing your photos.

Yews, this is what became South Hialeah Elem. There are several other photo's in this gallery that show the progression of the additions.

Is this what later was called South Hialeah Elementary? I can't place the streets readily in my mind - but this certainly looks like the Spanish style of South Hialeah, my first elementary school in the early 50s.

I believe this the East portion of the old school. There were towers both at the N.E.
and N.W. corners. Wonder when the other portions were built. I remember in the
early 50's they closed off the open section on the South end where they the dean's
offices on the East side and the principals office on the West.
