Roland, I don't know the answer regarding your bridge tender house question. Sorry!

Guest, there were buildings (small houses, apartments, a small restaurant or two, and a few motels if memory serves me correctly) right on the bank of the canal further west and east of the bridge in the photo. The buildings east of the bridge were wiped out in the 80's as I recall when the state and city put in a linear walking/bicycle path and landscaping. The buildings west of the bridge were there later into the 90's/00's and they were wiped out when the state widened Okeechobee Road from 4 lanes to 6 lanes with a landscaped median.

Edward, thank you for your comments, I'm glad you enjoy the photos!

Does anyone know or remember if there were actual buildings in the Hialeah side of the canal? if so, how west or north into Hialeah did these buildings exist, and how recently were they around. I vaguely remember one building on the hialeah side right by the bridge, and small ones as you went south on Okeechobee. of course, these were crack houses in the 70's or maybe even the 80's.

Does anyone know where the bridge tender's house was located, if it was on the Hialeah or Miami springs side?

Ellen, did you by any chance know my mom? Her name was Carol Hawkins Class of 61 Hialeah High.
Sincerely,
Dave

A great site. Brought back many memories. I have many pictures from the flood of 47. That is the year we moved to Miami Springs. I was 3 at the time. My dad's old studebaker sitting in the front yard. Going to Rustic Roller Rink and the bridge over to Hialeah. Went to Hialeah High. What great memories of that time.
Enjoyed your site very much. Thanks!
