1921 - the Hialeah welcome on County Road (later Okeechobee Road)

Hialeah, Florida

This image is a William A. Fishbaugh photograph donated to the Florida State Archives. I cropped and enhanced it for website display.

From the Florida Archives: "On the left is the Hialeah welcome sign, depicting Seminole Indian Jack Tigertail in traditional dress. The building on the right is apparently the welcome station/real estate development office for Hialeah. At extreme left is the Miami Canal."

other sizes: small medium original auto

If you could only see what this intersection and stretch of road looking north looks like in 2014, you'd be sick! Jack Tigertail was replaced by a concrete pad and a streetlight. The Welcome Station area is a parking lot for a high-rise roach motel and urban development has changed it all. Nothing stays the same, does it?
