1948 to 1950 - a Sundeck Homes poured concrete home in east Hialeah

811 E. 17th Street, Hialeah, Florida

Thank you to Greg Hattaway for contributing this great old image of his family's poured concrete home that included a solid concrete roof. The Vellanti family owned Sundeck Homes which built many homes like this in east Hialeah, primarily in the Sun Tan Village area. The obituary for Tom Vellanti, one of my former Commanding Officers in the Coast Guard Reserve, is at: http://www.pbase.com/donboyd/image/107650732

Look to the right side of the photo and you will see a house with a staircase on the back. Sundeck homes had a staircase in back which led to the flat concrete roof. The roof was enclosed with a rail and short wall so the roof could be used as an open deck. Thus, the name "Sundeck Homes". There are other solid concrete homes in the area that did not have a "sundeck". This house was built in 1947-1948, based on the lack of vegetation around the house we assume this photo was taken somewhere between 1948 and 1950.
