Vietnam War '67 - '68

Photos and memories from a tour in Vietnam as a combat medic with the 2/2nd Infantry (Mechanized) Ramrods (April - Sept. '67) and 2/28th Infantry Black Lions (Sept. '67 - April '68), 1st Infantry Division. Although most were, not all of these photos were taken by me personally. Some were taken by friends or came from archives or other sources. I have had the privilege of reconnecting with many of the guys I served with in the last several years through the magic of the internet. They were brave soldiers and I am blessed to have these good friends whose courage and loyalty I respect and treasure.

The gallery shares experiences and people who were important in my life and the lives of others. It also attempts to honor those who should be more than just names on a wall or award citations. I have added details and recollections when relevant (although sometimes irreverently and probably not always accurately) and links to other sources in order to provide more information. If you are interested in historical photos you will find some of those. If you are interested in learning more about what those photos mean, then please read the narratives and follow the links.

Prostate cancer. I just finished iodine contrast and found a calcified gaulbladder. Needs surgery asap. Would never have found what is part of health problem. Might have been the stale bisch beer in lai khe. The other is psa rest 1900. Scheduled after my nuke scan with nuke injections after waiting 2 years for covid and hospitals. All this feels like when i was told im pointman on long range recon up the mountain of loc ninh. . This was mid september after our big loses a couple days before . I got through that and i will enter this in same manner. Push forward and keep my head down. If you are having these problems good luck to you and if i can help contact me.

In remembrance. 2022 rest in peace timmons a big kid from the south. Always a big smile and a chat when we saw each other. Len potts a young kid who did his job well. Scoggins kia with potts. Bob young a kid who was kia and recieved b s w/ v devise Little joe who caught a mortar in his chest friday 13 September 1968. There are many more but i may have left out because of the years gone bye. You will always be remembered as kids when you left us. We who survived may be known as old timers remembering times gone bye. Most of our big losses were loc ninh September 13 1968. You are remembered to this day rip brothers

Great album. 69/70. Was in B 1/5 arty for a short time before they yanked me off the gun and sent to hump a radio for the FO with C 2/28. They began standing down so I was sent to RTO for FO (Lt Hart)A 1/2

Forgot to mention I have been back to VN twice since war in '94 and 2019. Amazing change and growth. Love the people! I even thought about moving there at times. Too old now and too many medical issues.

I was in VN in '67 also. Ninth Infantry south of Saigon. In my fifth month I was due to go out as point man on a patrol the day I was notified the Red Cross had an emergency leave for me due to family emergency. Came home and applied for hardship discharge to help run family business after father's heart attack. He survived -barely- I got Honorable Discharge and never went back. Three weeks later my cousin who was in the same battalion was shot up, came home and is a grandfather now. We were the lucky. Thank you for sharing!

Chico meyers. When i first saw the movie platoon. As soon as i saw the big guy with the short timers stick with the concertina wrapped around it. I thought of you. I really dont know why. Something about his actions. You were a great team member. I have macular degeneration in both eyes so my seeing the small print is difficult. I do also want to say hi to goodman. I believe he was close to 5’ 11” black curly hair. He knew some vietnamese.

In 1969 bravo co 1/28 was low on men. Lima plt had 8 men including sgt and lt. we were sent out on many recon patrols as a plt. We all spent time as point men.

Thanks to you doc berry ; I found c troop Lima plt who was the track spivey,ashline and myself were with at fsb doc .march 29 1969. Most of our missions we never knew anything unless you happened to hear radio. It is nice to finally know the name of the trolley car we rode into hell on. I always got along with quarter cav. Nice guys . I can now say that after reading after action reports that colonel hopinski didn't know the 1 /28 had bravo Lima plt on his quarter horses circling the wagons. He stated we were not needed. Our xo must have sent us from fsb Lorraine to help out. We helped others out when being piled upon ; and 1/4 cav and 11acr helped us. I want to say that I was lucky to have spivey and ashline with me that night. I had been in firefights next to them before. They fought until it was over. They never lost there cool If I could I would put them both in for a medal or at least a thank you.

Machine gunner. In my unit we had to work as ammo bearer until assistant gunner moved up to gunner .the m 60 had a 3 man crew. It took me 3 or 4 months to move from ammo bearer to assistant gunner. The m60 was important to the platoon as it put out a lot of fire power. So the gunner was a big target for Nva. The crew didn't pull listening post or many other details . I had the best two men in my crew they were always on top of getting ammo to me if needed. When told to walk point carrying the 60 was a position I took a few times. I told my crew to stay back a distance in case I walked into something. I told them when the shooting starts to catch up to me fast but stay under cover as moving up trail. I got into a scrape once in a while and my crew was up and covering me. The m 60 was one hell of a gun.

My cousin passed away yesterday from cancer. He was a tank vtr driver with a cav unit. No info. He was ill for a long time. He was in rvn 1967/68 I believe . I don't know if agent orange was cause of cancer. But why not. Roundup has caused cancer. I didn't know where to post . H Steve rafferty. Another soldier passed .

I enjoyed the actual flight time over the tall forrests barely above the foliage at break neck speeds . The landings weren't looked foreword in an air assault into 3 corps could be devastating . I was fortunate enough to be picked up at Fire support base doc the morning after a ground attack. The loch landed and the pilot walked to the wire and called my name out. We flew out in that little Ferrari . We sped over tree tops as tho pilot made quick adjustments that made the little bird make quick movement feeling like an amusement park ride.if I had been 20 years old at entry into service. I would have applied for helicopter pilot . .the hot meals a bunk and hot showers . Were extra pluses

I have been reading a book. " Low level Hell " . A book written by a 1 I.d. Scout pilot his story is about what he observed flying over fsb gela may 13 1969. The 1/28 had fought off a large ground attack with dinks charred in the concertina. Good report on a big fight.

I was trained by the best. But I never thought I was the best even though I worked with the best . I was drafted and served country as my family on both sides. I do remember johnny spivey a great guy.and ashline as well .we went through a year of hell together . Peace brothers !

Cordoning a village. After setting up a circle a surrounding the village . Others made announcements for a surrender of all v c. Sometimes chu hoi papers would be dropped out of choppers flying over . We would settle in for a night ambush situation . This was because v c would sometimes bolt out of village in the dark. This was always a possibility. We went into the village checking identification . We searched private homes and I felt a guilt for that . The thatched huts had dirt floors ; and as I walked across the bedroom I noticed something under the bed. After moving the bed there was a fox hole . I thought what a life these people lived. This family had some money. They owned a hughe pink pig that hung around like a dog , and slept on the dirt floor in the hut.

My dad Phillip Leonard served in Lai Khe from '67 -'68 he was a medic with the 18th surgical. He left on February 28th 1968. His regular scheduled pick up decided it was too risky to pick him up and another helicopter pilot heard and said he would do a quick fly by and if my dad could jump on he would take him out. My dad was so emotional he forgot to ask the pilot his name. My dad is just now starting to open up about his time in Vietnam, when he told me this story he broke down and wept, he kept saying, I should have got his name. If anyone can help me find this pilot I would be grateful. I know it's a long shot or if you served in the 18th surgical in Lai Khe from '67 -'68 and knew my dad. please contact me. Did anyone serve with Pete (Pietro) Piconi in 1968? I am his nephew and in search of more info about him. He was KIA 26 Nov 1968 while being Medivac'd with 6 other wounded - 12 KIA in all on that aircraft. Was serving with the 1st Cav - BCo, not sure of his Battalion. Tay Nihn Province NW of Quan Loi. It is frustrating when so many ask question but leave no e mail, Facebook or phone nose to contact them. Also it would be nice if each unit, at least Division had a post like so you wouldn't have to read so much to find your unit. I am Bradley Price of Somerset KY. I was known as lightening and was stationed in nd nd A Co. nd Bn. Much nd Infantry Regiment nd Infantry Division stationed at Laikhe Vietnam between Feb.04 1967 and Feb 04 1968.My first Squad Members were Howard Dexter Gerstein from Pacoima California who was KIA Thursday February 23rd when our APC which was leading a Convoy north toward Pre Klock from the Black Virgin Mountain. Others of the squad were Hunter, Horne, Davis, Parker, Bunce, myself and two more. we were all wounded. Seven were med-evaded all except Bunce and I. He had less than 30 days remaining and asked to work with the cooks. My next squad members were Anthony J Lagoon, John H Zuber, Bill (Pop) Lindley, Wayne J Battersby, Tom Reassert, ? (Meat) Hill, ? Also as someone has stated both the St nd battalions of the nd Infantry Regiment holds an annual reunion in Pigeon Forge TN every year in late May. At the Norma Dan Motel. Everyone îs invited and urged to attend. It always runs from Thursday through Sunday. Next year, 2019 it will be May 30 through June 02.Thanks to Dave Berry for allowing me to say so much.

The firing lanes of hobo woods. A few words in attempt to explain what a vietnamese bunker area of fire looked like in hobo woods in 1968/69. Hobo woods was black lions and a o. And was visited a few times during my tour. My first time on point in hobo woods and I am walking small trail that began to narrow as I walked in . The trees and brush had been groomed back narrowing to trail ; until I was at a dead end . I saw a punji pit with yellow bamboo stalks with sharp black burned tips. Looking just ahead of that was a well camouflaged bunker made of logs and dirt. The bunker was low to the ground with a long barely visible machine gun port . I turned around and all of those directly behind me ran out of fire lane and out of line of fire. Mike platoon tried another approach and lost men. My heart sank when I heard Automatic fire and claymore.

These pictures cause a feeling to go through me that I cannot explain but it’s there. Lai Khe was my base camp from May ‘67 - May ‘68. Tet will never be forgotten. Also spent very limited time in Loc Ninh, An Loc, Quan Loi. I went over as a 91A10 and came back as “Radar” as I tell my kids, with B Company, 1st Medical Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. I had the great honor of meeting Sgt. Roy Benavides before he passed. His actions in Loc Ninh occurred one week before I came home. The only Medal of Honor recipient I have ever met. Bless all of you out there and pray for our new brave generation who carry on.

I once read some letters from civil war soldiers sent home to family . The soldiers wrote of their own personal experiences . I was so taken by the fact that those soldiers in the civil war of the United States suffered the same as we did in the war with north Vietnam . War always reduces some into the mud and gristle of dog fights while the leaders in towers of might and righteousness are making plans for another bloody fight . The Vietnam vet needs to needs to knock aside the guilt feelings the war resisters in the us tried to embellish upon us. Spivey , ashline . Bailey , red feather. Say something. It would be great to know your alive.

When printing events about combat situations and using yourself as reference you are opening yourself to scrutiny and possible attack. As in sergeant hack. Sergeant hack has been attacked on line back in past by what I after reading a few of their posts were new age hung ho. Who may have been Vietnam units in Vietnam in general. But I chose to try to rewrite some of my things I turned in in creative writing classes at Long Beach and I s c . My skill and even punctuation is dismal. My study of John stinebeck . .and his opposite. Hemingway . Age 70. Years. Bad memories bad health ,and too many years from USC classes and fields in Vietnam . It is what it is. Or no sweat.

No surprise even street kids knew of our mission assaingments. So many pro 25's fell into enemy hands when we lost whole platoons in major ambushes and battles. I'm Sure every village on the thunder had a radio monitoring us. But when everyone knew our information makes you wonder. I have no doubt pro 25 batteries were quite available on black market. I bought an am fm radio at pic and carried it in field. I found I could aim antenna on radio and switched to proper band I could hear full transmission made by chopper to our c o when close enough to our position. As mentioned in my post street kids living under the thunder ( Cali ).

Street kids living under the thunder. As a " new man and 18 years old I saw things a little differently than most. And I had a year in Vietnam and six months and freedom. I just wanted to get out with everything I had when I stepped on the ground in Saigon. After I started working the thunder fsb 's on highway 13 thunder road. I began to see dirty little kids in groups eating from our dump sites. They were orphans of the war. There were groups at each fsb. I had brothers and sisters their ages. I thought what if this happened to them. The only thing I could think of was to save candy and throw it to them when I saw them .i noticed a one armed blond haired kid who seemed to run the gang of kids. The one armed kid was around 8 years old. After watching them take orders from the kid with an arm missing above the elbow. It struck me the kid wearing only ragged dirty shorts was a girl. She had a bad temper if you yelled her. She cussed like a drunken sailor . After running into them the older boys would start talking about things . One time I purposely started an arguement with a couple and as we were going out to board choppers. One of them yelled at me I know where you are going . I said bullshit. He yelled an loc . When Lima 5 came by I said we're going to an loc. He looked at me and asked how in hell did you know that. Was someone monitoring our radio.

to dave berry: the batte at ong tranh was a disaster! I was across the the road from the fight at a firebase.Without all the gory details. 2/28 was out manned and out gunned. there were two vc regiments waiting or then in a u shaped ambush!! the entire command group was wiped out, most of the officer and sgt major were killed. when we ( bde hq) got it was pretty much over. we were evacuating wounded and recovering the dead. 55 dead 2 missing. was sicking. the battalion cmdn was killed along with our bde s3. fo pinky homes kia. won moh. I knew clark welch and he was badly wounded, clark reciently died in Leesburg fl. I was one of 3 1Lts asst s-3. was a horrable carnage! still have flashbacks and vc were shooting at servivors from trees. Looking for anyone who may have some information about 2/28th Infantry rifle companies that were almost completely wiped out in (1967?) I have heard stories that the VC unit that carried out this attack was led by a woman who carried a chrome plated AK-47. I am curious if there is any truth to this story.

He graduated from the Advanced Chemical School at Fort McLellan in June of 1965. He was a Training NCO. He was also in the 1st BN 7th Calvary, Garry Owen 1st Calvary Division Airborne Korea 1964. He wore the Garry Owen Badge. Do you know him or know how I can find others that may have known him? He died on Nov. 2, 1969 in a car crash in Germany. I found another record that showed that he died on that same day in Guyana. I have been told that he might not have died that day and may still be alive. I found out the Friday before Memorial Day this year and I have been trying to find more information about him.

COL Watson: Ong Thanh was a nearby stream, and lacking anything else in the vicinity to locate it, other than grid coordinates, it became the Battle of Ong Thanh. You are correct in your assumptions that the soldiers were already exhausted. Among other things, we had already picked up and moved our perimeter 3 times in the previous 8 days, digging in all night each time. LTC Allen was desperate for a win, and he gambled our soldiers' lives and lost.

In my examination of all writings about Ong Thanh, we seem to come up with more reasons for our loss...from a more experienced 271st to faulty M-16s to being wornout from the last 10 days(true)I'm sure that all of these contributed BUT the real reasons were position, defense and surprise. These 3 were enough to take down any in unit; our boys were some of the best and our C o. Cmdrs. were tops. I also believe the other officers and key NCOS were good soldiers. Despite the Brass' comments; the Bn. Cmdr. was in the wrong slot; he was the sole cause of the massacre. There is NO shame by any member of A or D companies nor any on the unit. We did not blame the 7th Cav at Little Big Horn. My latest,THE CUL de SAC OF DEATH, captures, I pray, the emotions before, during and ater the battle of our men.I was at Lai Khe during that period and our main discussion was about the absence of Dog tags; as the 'lid' had been put on the facts of the battle. We didn't even know its name. Thanks for alerting me to this tragedy; it speaks volumes for young guys caught in a meat grinder BUT determined to survive and bring out their buddies. I do not see the James Owens, he served in Vietnam around 67-1070, not completely sure, He was in first infra try and was rewarded the bronze star. He came from Red Hook, in Brooklyn, his brother was a priest. His friend in Brooklyn was James Sullivan. To the person looking for Craig Frye. If you are talking about my uncle, Craig W. Frye, of Leet, West Virginia, who was in 1st Cav in 1968-1969. Hit and severely wounded in the Central Highlands and flown to Japan. He spent two years in Walter Reed before being released. Married for 46 years to my aunt, Mary, before passing five days ago. I know he was in country only a short time before being wounded -- neck to ankle when an RPG hit the M113 his squad was riding on. He was a great man - as you all are. I was never in the military, but I have the greatest respect for you all. I salute you.

I served most of '67 & part of '68 with C-1-18 of the BRO...had no idea you were such a prolific and great photographer until recently receiving what I call the "Loc Ninh Red Tracer Show" photo, early Nov. 1967. It was our 1st squad which spearheaded the first attack [29 Oct 1967, 12:09 hrs.] into the "Rubber"...long day with 62 to follow. This photo brought back a lot of memories for me as I [we] were somewhere in the midst of it for too many nights. I was First Gun [M60] of two in the first platoon and by Loc Ninh, very "Crusty". We had a bunch of new guys who hadn't been in the middle of the enemy before, so bit our lips and led the way; they did OK under the circumstances. Is a copy of this photo for sale? And how much is it? Google for an unedited, lengthy and somewhat boring story which I contributed to our book as edited, published and printed by the BRO Museum, then released May 2012. Sarge hack. Read you were hit sept. 13 Friday 1968. Black lions had many wia Kia from that time through October. Sorry to hear you got one. I was on listening post stair strip bandit hill. No sooner got set up and we heard movement all the length of air strip I broke radio silence and advised we had movement. After calling through a couple networks I knew we were marked. I advised co I was moving lp sight only responce all night was don't move your site . We ran down airstrip 20 yards jagged bak to side and hit ground I kept sight on previous lp site and counted five mortar rounds hit in what would have been our bodies the rounds walked mid air strip twenty yards away at our feet. Then hit every bunker in ndp. Little joe got it Friday 13. We got away that night. Welcome home hack

He worked in the S3 shop and commanded C 2/28 in 1969. He didn't speak often of his memories from Vietnam, but fondly remembered Charlie Company men and occasionally told tales of your exploits. He returned to Vietnam in '71-'72 as an adviser to the 66th ARVN Ranger battalion and retired in 1993.

Because of line #24 on my DD-214 being really "incomplete" I'm really in NEED of BUDDY LETTERS...The BOARD OF "suppose to be" CORRECTIONS is telling me there is no RECORDS of ME or my UNIT...saying that there is no RECORDS of us doing ANYTHING...They CHANGED my Campaighn Medal w four Bronze Stars to a SERVICR MEDAL and DENY putting my CIB on record.They finally found my Airmedal w the cluster/others that was'nt on line #24..BUT still DENY my CIB that was pinned on in Di-An our rear.I shot EXPERT with the M-16,fouth from the top (64) with 65 being the highest,they giving me MARKSMAN and "refuse" to change it.I'm LOOKING for ANY Grunts that served B 2/18th that "may" recall me from Di-An (our rear) and "especially" the WATERPLANT on 13. I was RTO for B1 the Lt that the Sniper hit..the projectile crossed my left shoulder(heard the swoosh/the thud as the Lt. went down)BEFORE it struck the Lt. B co 1/28 September 12 or 13th september 1968. We b co left bandit hill major Bruner 1id . 5th special forces in commanding officer. B. Co. Filed out of ndp at bandit hill towards a yard village a few clicks away . We passed in backyard of a nicely groomed home and dipped into the rubber tree plantation ( the major told me to go to back of file and walk rear security . Instead of point. In the long rows of dripping trees I saw a person following way behind , darting from tree to tree. I pretended not to see him until I let him catch up . I stood sideways and he couldn't see where I went. He walked past me and I put my m 16 in his back and said chu hoi . Didn't know what else to say. We caught up to the patrol and I finally held up the column . Lt s were growling as they went to crouch position. The major aske me what was up. I told him the situation . After being interrogated the vietnamese man was picked up at a spot out on the thunder. We waited for a couple hours and a jeep picked him up and whisked him to saigon. I asked what would happen to him answer. He will be asked a lot of questions. When finished he will be given an i cream cone .

Clash of the Titans. While on ambush in the iron triangle area on a night so black I couldn't see further than my nose I heard out in the jungle. A distinct voice cry out f/u over and over. I remembered ft polk cadre telling us about the f/u lizards pulling that on them . I figured it was someone in squad messing with cherry boy. I never brought it up . While outside one of the thunders I walked up on guys from arty and grunts with hughe lizards with spots. The lizards were heals by a noose around neck. They let them loose and they fought like pit bulls. I asked a guy he told me they were f / u lizards . But I knew from then while laying on ground and I hear him calling out f/u. F/u f/u. I won't answer back.

In 1968 I met our new kit Carson scouts. I was working wit all three some times and my very first mission with them. I asked what they did before joining us. They mostly killed for weapons or contraband. I asked them if they would kill me. Their answer was no. They made too much money working for us. We then trusted one another. They each gave me one of their neck chains with metal amulets. These were to ward off death in the jungle. B co 1/28 black lion 68/69.

My little Brother, Joseph David Means, we called him Butch, was in Vietnam as a Sea Bee. He said he worked on the tank trucks hauling Agent Orange. He died at 29 years of age with every form of cancer known to medical science. He was from Wayne, MI and died in San Diego CA. Because he died so quickly, 13 days after finding he had cancer, and he had moved to San Diego, CA from Michigan we never got to see any of his pictures from Vietnam. If anyone has any information about him I would appreciate it. My older brother, Al Murray, was the Command Master Chief at Oceana Naval Station, VA. He served 3 tours in Vietnam, Joe served one, and I didn't serve any because they were both there at the same time. I spent my time at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown, VA.

My brother, James (Jim) Deegan, retired Lt. Colonel, is in the picture captioned LZ1. He served 1963-1985. He was wounded in 1968, a head injury, and came home that summer, only to return for another tour in 69-70. Jim died last week, 02/03/2016. He was 74 years old. He was my brother, my friend, my hero. Being an assistant gunner for the m60 I carried one ammo can on each side full of 60 ammo suspended from my shoulders. I also carried two claymores 4frags 4smokes all my m16 magizines 17 of them . A bandoleer in front and survival necessities. That was the worst duty ever. The weight was staggering by I could use it all at different. That was my mos specialist in destruction. Claymores also made good heat tabs for hot c rats. There were times the straps from we gear from the ammo cand dug deep into my shoulders and even my od green towel on my neck couldn't offer enough padding.

Aimee Jones: My father was a CPL in the 1st batalian, 1st Marines in 1968. He was WIA Sept 1968. Like your father mine was tormented by demons - finally succeeding in suicide in 1995. I'm not sure where he got them but I have unclassified copies of activity for the 1/1 for January through September. They list all of the leaders for the month, where they were, promotions, "intelligence", number of enemy contacts and detainees, and of course numbers of KIA and WIA. It goes into "Operations" during the month, talks about artillery and air support and contains a "sequential listing of significant events". My dad also received a copy of the "JOURNAL" for the day he was WIA that lists events by time. That form appears to have a number _AVMC 219-GS. Unfortunately I have no idea where he ordered them from but it would've been by mail for sure. Just so you know these documents are available. Maybe you can find something more about your fathers service time. Best of luck!

Pagoda phu Loi after a long patrol ambush and patrol back to the pagoda. My team I call it because it was never a full platoon . We were seen by a second lt laying about on the bunkers resting and drying out from a wet R stormy night and some of the jungle was dense and difficult to pass through. Unless you walked trails . Back at the bunker lt sees us and jumped rooster on us. He thought hard and discovered a pile of clay tiles meant at one time a couple hundred. Years ago. Order stack all that tile . As he left I suggested to the rest let's use sticks to move those things. After killing a few scorpions came out to find out what was going on. We sprayed them with our dioxin mosquito repellent. Tha sent the writhing and soon dieing. At last to my horror a small snake came out of tiles and wrapped itself around my leg and bit into my pants leg ang hung on . I finally after looking like a dancing monkey knocked the snake to the ground a quick head stomp and the little snake with the tiny head lost the fight. Lt sees the ruckus walks over and says that's a two step you should have been messing with the snake. That was the first step growing into a black lion.

Speaking of agent orange . Get checked black lions we were in the same boonies . Have had surgery for a deep melanoma on shoulder. Says he got it but the whole scenario gains nothing because the carcenoma by my left tear duct may not be a choice. And the then the slow moving prostate can put the coup de grau . Not saying name but see your about abnormalities on skin. Peace

To l 5 Wardell . You must have been at an loc when the mortar attack kia little joe from philly. I moved l p position at air strip we were being probed just after dark . I could hear the few strands of rusty barbed wire creaking at different intervals along an old non functional b wire fence. I called in on every radio I knew was monitoring . I may have asked for arty but no answer. I knew they were pacing out distances to the track company who were squeezed in that small thunder position. The last thing I said over the radio was blank blank I'm moving position. The only thing I heard back was you better not move your position. Ronnie baucom and another guy moved about 40 ft away and lay down a small hump in ground as side of airstrip. I kept an eye on the spot we were in . Ronnie and other guy were getting down and I was in center behind them. As I pushed to the ground I saw two or three mortar rounds hit our old spot. And then they concentrated in center of airstrip a few feet behind us. Then they walked the rounds I and went counter clockwise until they were out of amo. Laying on that strip that night taught me a good lesson. My life didn't mean much. Nothing made sense to me.

Question to any black lion who ever saw long red clay buildings in Cambodia . The long 12ft tall and 30ft +. The two I walked upon were rounded at tops looked like loaves of bread .they had tall arch doors and were sitting on clay circle. Thick red clay covering the jungle from encroaching or even touching the clay. They were identical and looked ancient. Has anyone else seen them. I believe Wardell you may have been out on that long patrol

B co 1st/28. I don't believe we had the same air back up or same assault rides. After a few times of being extracted just in time . I began to sometimes see same pilots picking up others we recognized one and other . The one chopper pilot I remember like yesterday was the guy who was wearing a bandana and handlebar mustache I always thought you were listening to lead zeppelin . Not vaughner my salute to all you air nuts. I'm proud of my air assault medal.

Doug Deweese; Gun fire control tech aboard IFS-1 Carronade Flag ship to St. Francis River(Top Gun),White River,Clarion River.There in 1967-1968.We relieved one another on the Gun line but never mingled.We shot together once in awhile and talked with the O-1 Bird dogs in fire coordination sometimes.I don't know how many loads of Mk. 105 Rockets we expended but it took all day to fully load the Mags.We loaded at Cam Ranh Bay and Cubi Pt.PI.The longest stint on the Gun Line was 111 days,which seemed an eternity.The reward for our exhausting efforts was the beach beer stand with 10 cent PBRs or Grande Islanding

Please contact me. "We are their voices" Only surviving combat soldiers can tell their story with any accuracy. As I was hanging my American flag up today in remembrance of Memorial Day (May 25, 2015), I was revisiting my last minutes in Vietnam after being air lifted out of the field, full of morphine with my best buddy laying next to me in a UH-1 helicopter. I was going home. I was one of the lucky ones so to speak. More importantly to this story is my reoccurring memory not of my circumstance but of the two American soldiers that lost their earthly voices on October 27, 1967. They did not return home and their Western Union telegram to their families was much different than mine! I didn’t know either of these two American combat soldiers but I was on the friendly side of an NVA bunker when I spotted them. These two wounded American soldiers had encountered the full wrath of enemy NVA machine gun. I will never forget the desire to help them and be close enough to know that they were so riddled with bullets that their fate was most likely sealed but we stilled tried to help them. Leave no soldier behind was instilled in us! In the end, try as we might to help them, they perished on that day only to be remembered as true “Hero’s” that gave of themselves for the good of their combat partners and our country. Though I have my own memories of my Vietnam experience, I’m alive, able and willing to help tell their story. As veterans and families of fallen soldiers, we must keep their stories alive with the hope that those who live in this country somehow appreciate the sacrifice others have paid for them. The take-away message about these two United States combat soldiers is that there were 58,220 Armed Forces members that lost their life in Vietnam so the rest of us could try to make them proud of their service and our accomplishments. For me, my heart has much empathy for those that serve our country and especially our combat soldiers. What do you do to make America worth them dying for us? Great collection! I was in the Mekong Delta in '67 with the 9th Infantry Division doing day and night patrols with the Riverine Unit boats. Nasty. Got out early afyer just 5 months when my dad had a heart attack and I got snet home and never went back. I was scheduled to be point man that day, so it may have aved both our lives.

He received a Silver Star for Gallantry in Action. According to award: While crossing a trail the Scout team was subjected to heavy fire. He tended to the wounded even after he himself was wounded .. He pulled a wounded soldier to safety and lay on top of him to protect him from further injuries.. That is where his life ended. I know a soldier called "Papa son" ?? and also a Charles "Chuck" Olsen(Radio identity= Silent Chuck, Ghost, C Tech) was also there on this date.... Dust off was usually made in the heat of combat pop red smoke. I looked at some of those choppers being hit as they lifted off with dead and wounded. We thought I don't want to be dusted off. Possibility of being hit again while being taken to rear aid was always a big fear. But u guys pulled a lot of hairy details

Mistake on last entry Battle of loc ninh sept 68. Dose anyone remember a 5 man volunteer mission led by major d Bruner . We went into Cambodia and grabbed a north Vietnamese missile guidance expert from a a group of people moving south. This guy defected from n vietnam. We moved at double time out of there. And next day major Bruner called in a chopper .we cut down some sapling trees and the chopper let down sling picked him up and left us there. We made it fast back into vietnam for fear of being caught. I didn't know any of those guys but I know I got to work with some top flight professionals. I always knew when working for major Bruner who was special forces and 1st I d. The mission would be a good mission. Because I was trained by special forces cadre at ft Polk la. That defector gave me a propaganda book the north Vietnamese gave out to scare the people of what we would do to them if they let us win. If the Vietnamese liked u they would give u a gift the book was what he gave me. I will say something more about the book another time.

Hello my dad was in Vietnam in Mat Control from July 31,1967-1968. I do not know where he was stationed when he went possibly England. I was born in 1969 at Scott Air Firce base. My mother said he never fought as all he did was draw maps and hand out supplies, but I got a letter that said he worked from 6 am to 6 pm and pulled guard duty every night sometime between 11:30 pm- 2:00 am. Every night VC attacked them but they always won as he put it. He said he had 5 airmen working for him. My father was from China his father was an officer in the KMT and close ties with Chennault. His mother was in prison for being a Christain. My mother says he didn't do anything much. He was in the Air Force for 22 years. If you know my father please tell me the truth about him because I have suffered a life time without him. All the others favored my mother. I was my father's child and always felt abducted. People have always been very mean to me because I'm European and Chinese and I have always had to be tough but after all these years I'm not so tough anymore as I still just want to go home. I want to tell him it was an honor to have him as my father. No matter what he did.

Les Phy I rode the 2nd of 2nd B Co. 208 track Jan 68 to Aug 68. That was the maintenance track. At the time I was the only 63C mechanic. I have looked for info and until today I had not seen any on my company. Could not believe all the pics of those tracks. What stopped me on the 208 was I painted the number on it. I t was new when I arrived. An other post listed the Captain of B Co as Sonny Gratzer. I was on the S&D when he was Shot. Our track was next to the command track 206.

Do u remember hearing the truck up in Michelin rubber. Above the fire base Lorraine Truck stopped what sounded too close. The truck fired rockets over us and hit lai khe we watched the explosions hit close to ammo dump. More to it but maybe later.

He just had surgery today for colon cancer and also has inoperable liver cancer. He already survived prostate cancer 12yrs. ago, and a massive heart attack 2yrs ago. Thanks to Dr. Brody in Reno, through holistic medicines, he survived the prostate cancer when only give 4yrs. Now he's been told he has 18mos to live. When he gets out of the hospital in Lake Tahoe, he and his faithful wife, Lynn, will be heading up to Reno. Please pray for him.

Austin Feld is a friend of mine who is currently in VA residential facility in Tomah WI. He was in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. He was in 1st infantry division The Big Red One, Bravo 1st Batallion/2nd infantry regiment, Third Platoon. He is not doing well and having contact with anyone who served with him would be the best medicine he could receive. Is there anyone left from the Big Red One? He has vivid recollections of his time in Vietnam. He has some PTSD understandably. Would be nice if he could share some memories with someone who was there or a close family member.

My name is Nick Delli Veneri and I am looking for any information on one Robert Preston Perriloux from Ridgewood, NJ. He served with the 4th Infantry Div stationed along the South China Sea near Pleiku. He was injured in a mortar attack at his base camp which I donot know the neame of on March 13, 1976. He served from Nov of 1965 till Oct of 1967. He passed away from these injuries on Feb 27, 1991 and we are trying to get his named placed on the momumnet here in our home town, His death was classified as service-related by the VA but the town histrian is saying it doesn't meet some criterai which I think is not right. My husband Robert Wayne Bufford served 67-68 us army, B Co 34th Engineers,called Buffy, or Wayne by some. He is from Troy Missouri, was not married at the time of service. now takes eds for PTSD, agent orange heart problems, has piece of bomb bite in his back and leg and neck. he later suffered an appendices operation and was sent home on a medical transport plane. He never received any of his pictures that he took over there. and a lot of his personal things did not get sent home to him after he was taken out of there. He served during Operation Billings, and I am trying to find others that served as well. He was a Platoon Sgt with the 1/16 Infantry, B Company, again, his name is Joe, he was from Virginia. I was reading aloud to him, the info wiki had about Operation billings, at this time he gave me three names...Company Commander Owens, Company Commander Waltzman, and one Lt Benjamin "Benny" Star, that at a later date went to recon, and at some point, lost his life. These men were from B and C Company. Dave- I am looking for anyone that knew my father- Staff Sgt. James (Jimmy) Edward Moore. He was born in 1939 and grew up in NC near Fort Bragg. He graduated from the Advanced Chemical School at Fort McLellan in June of 1965. He was a Training NCO. He was also in the 1st BN 7th Calvary, Garry Owen 1st Calvary Division Airborne Korea 1964. He wore the Garry Owen Badge. Do you know him or know how I can find others that may have known him? He died on Nov. 2, 1969 in a car crash in Germany. I found another record that showed that he died on that same day in Guyana. I have been told that he might not have died that day and may still be alive. I found out the Friday before Memorial Day this year and I have been trying to find more information about him.

Great pics my friend n vet.I was in 701st maintenance in quanloi and phoucvihnn,also a mechanic and transport specialist and parts expeditor in Big Red One aug 67 to aug 68.I rode in helicopters next to gunners delivering starlight scopes all around the area there.Our hootch was named Sams Place if anyone remembers Harry.I had some great friends there too,one was Gary Earnhartt or Earnhard from Dayton Ohio,lost tract of him since Vietnam.Love the pics man,thanks.

I've been looking for anyone who might have known or have pictures of my cousin, 1st Lieutenant Joseph Miller (Infantry, US Army, Detachment B-33, Company A, 5th Special Forces group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, APO 96240. He was KIA on July 24, 1968 on a cordon and search near Loc Ninh. He was the senior special forces advisor to a strike force and was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for his heroic actions. I don't know his name but he is my father and I know he served in Vietnam. I was adopted at 10 days old, he died in a car accident at the age of 22 on November 29th 1970 five days before my Mom and him were supposed to get married. So she gave me up for adoption and I really would like to know his name. I do know he had an older sister and brother and worked as an assistant manager at a Steel Company when he returned home after he served time in the service. They were from Illinois in the Chicagoland area I would think. I know it's not much but if anyone might know him or think they might know who he is if you can please help. I know I'm probably looking for a needle in a haystack but I really don't know wha else to do. Thank you

Capt Green was HQ Co. commander when I arrived. First Sgt. Stearns was there also. Remember the Bob Hope show right after the base ammo dump was hit with rockets during Tet. A lot of memories. Richard, Bravo Co., 2/2nd was my unit before I transferred to 2/28th in Sept. '67. The Company Commander when I left was Cpt. Sonny Gratzer, a hard-charger who was badly wounded and evacuated during Tet. Sonny was an excellent combat leader and was highly decorated. Spent time in Loc Ninh, An Loc, and Quan Loi, as well. Was privileged to meet and have a great conversation with Roy Benavides one day in Houston. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Loc Ninh in May of 68. Welcome home to all.

We live in Seattle WA now and I have traveled with her for the past 21 years of her Naval carer. My dad went through the war back in 66 to 69 and he never talks much about it. I know it was hard on all of you and it was an injustice what you faced when you got home. Just wanted to say thank you, you are not forgotten.

Hello. I'm the daughter of Sgt. Marvin G. Binkley [born in Ohio]. He served in Vietnam, & the Korean War. He was working in the engineering field and was an aircraft mechanic. He served for 20 years and sadly died the year of his retirement at the age of 42. I'm lucky to have one military picture of him where it says 'Raleigh 1968'... the year I was born, so extra special. Great pictures, I am searching for anyone who served in the 4.2 inch mortar platoon, Headquarters Co. 2nd Battalion 28th Infantry 3rd Brigade First Infantry Div. Lai Khe Feb. 1966 to Sept. 1967. Sergant Lucas was the platoon sergant when I arrived. Some of the men in this unit were transfered to a make up a 4.2 inch air mobile unit in mid 1966 Our base camp was located directly across Hwy.13 from the air strip, about midway of the runway next to the village. In late 1966 we were attached to 2 Battalion 33rd Artillery along with 4 other guns from the 2nd Battalion Of 2nd Infantry & all 8 guns were were then considered Delta Battery. I was with the 2/28 Infantry in 1967. At Home base getting ready to Deros when Division came back to home base after battle of XOM BO II. IT was then that I found out about battle and men lost. Lost best friend Mike Morrow. Lost many friends that day. I will always remember as the battle took place on my birthday 17 June 1967. It was very hard to take. Got wasted on the way home that I missed my plane at Chicago O'Hare back to Boston. I fell asleep in terminal and waken up by MP's in the A.M. God bless all of you for listening. Bob

I was a medic in Vietnan from October 1968 to October 1969 with the 1/16TH Infantry mechanized, 1ST infantry division. We operated for a good while out of the fire support bases Thunder 1, 2, and 3. On occasions we made "Thunder runs" on highway 13 to clear the road. Engineers were taking too long to the sweep the road or were not available. We then operated out of firesupport base Junction City. After that we spent a great deal of time in the Michelun Rubber Plantation. I called Doc-Bandido. If anyone out there rememebers pleas eamil me. Thanks

Great job! I spent 7 months HHC in Lia Khe. First as field interrogator then as an order of battle anayalst with the 1st MI. My best memories are the days I spent in the field with the medics.Have tried for years to remember thier names but best I can do is remember Tim. We were both taken out of the field and spent time together just before TET. Looking to make contact with anyone from the first MI during 67-68. Thanks again and welcome home!

I am sad to report that Sargent Bill Wilson our good friend and comrade has passed away with cancer. May 5 @ 6:30pm at his home with his family and dog at his bed side. Sargent Bill Wilson was a black lion with B company 3th herd Aug. 66-67. Bill was my squad leader when I got to Nam in 67. He took me on my frist night ambush. He taught us NFG's alot in a very short time. Bill and I have stayed in touch for many years, and had some good times together. He always kidded me about how he saved my life. But it was no joke. Dave- Although I was born in 1964 I remember alot because my stepfather spent two tours there in the USAF. I can remember the pow bracelets that were worn at that time and cant help but hope and pray that the persons name on his bracelet made it home. A big thank you goes out to all who served in Vietnam and the great soldiers that made the ultimate sacrifice of giving their lives for our country. May this war never be forgotten

I enjoyed yyour photos. I was with 6thBn. 15th Artillery ( Deadly) Iwas in fire direction control work the radio keeping in touch with both infantry units and our firing batteries. Anyway they sent half of us up to Loc Ninh and the other half stayed in Quan Loi. Lucky me stayed in Quan Loi and I missed the battle. By the way you were are neighbors in Lai Khe. Was with ACo 1st platoon 2nd squad 2nd Btn 28th Inf 1st Inf Div in 1969,did search and destroy by day and ambush by night,had two Hero`s KIA with me on 09 September 1969,i was severly wounded and sent to a hospitol in japan for 36 days and back to the world.Was with Ward Anderson and another Vietnam Vet David McAlester, David lives in Ma and i finally learned after talking with him what happened that night about 2:30 AM , said the vc walked in 6 morters and he was glad cause number 7 would have landed on him,then they opened up with ak47`s.They almost shot the dustoff down when we left.Worked out of fsb Mahone on thunder road, and the michelin plantation and the black virgin mountain are unforgetable memories.We lost so many young in that horrible war, i was 18 when i arrived and it never leaves me .

John found me on the web, we were Emailing. getting cough up on life. Then I didn"t hear from him. He never said that anything was wrong.I guess that was John, and he never changed. Amazing! I have been looking for this info for years. Finally! I served with the 1/18 inf. At Loc Ninh in1967 11B20, I was with the swamp rat. I am looking for a friend, name Allen? Never new his last name. On Nov. 2 1967 at loc Ninh early AM the 1/18.under heavy attack was basically over ran by VC, Running out of ammunition. Artillery,mortar,choppers keep the VC. Blown off and out of our bunkers. As the fighting stop, Allen and myself volunteer to leave our perimeter because the helicopters dropped the co. Ammunition out side the perimeter. We after retrieving the ammo. Distributed the ammo to the troops. I would like to no his name? And thank him,never had the opportunity to no him or thank him!! Hope I some day will show him my appreciation .

Dave - this is truly a find. As often happens, I starting thinking of those days in 1967 when young and invincable, then I found this site just digging around the internet. More amazing, I found an image of myself and one that I took as a 1st Div Photographer that often worked with the Black Lions, including Ong Thanh (NPD 10/17/67 and Recovery 10/18/67) and Loc Nihn (11/3/67 plus). i was assigned with 2 bn 33rd arty,1st inf Div Lai Khe from nov 66 to april 69 at Lai Khe . was attached to 1st bn 16th inf as an RTO for an FO till oct 67 then went to Ben Cat again as an RTO. Stayed there till dec 68 (was over ran TET 68) then ran NCO club HHQ 2/33rd arty till april , time for home . I was home less than a year and trouble with law , , got a deal , no jail if went back to army for 3 yrs , back to nam this time with 101st. for this time of my life i should be proud but quite the opposite , feel like an empty man

These are fantastic pictures. From about April, 1968 to August,1968 I was Forward Observer Asst to Lt. Charles Smith Forward Observer of Alpha Co. 2/28. After he went home, I became the forward observer Sgt. Henry E. Smith( niner one romero ) for Alpha Co. I was called Smitty then.I was permanently assigned to Charlie Battery 2/33rd Artillery.There was a battle around May or June, 1968 that consisted of a batallion (2nd/28th)size S&D coming in contact with a regiment of NVA in a massive bunker complex on a hill near I think Loc Ninh. To my recollection, Delta was in lead with Alpha and Charlie behind them. A lot of guys got killed and wounded. I recall that we came off that hill escorted by air strikes to our rear and 11 Armoured Cav. on point. This was a battle it seems very similar to Ong Tranh in October, 1967. I remember the company commander and several others in the command section getting killed by a short round being fired line over us. The round hit a tree showering down sharpnel killing everyone directly underneath. There was a Commander who was killed while in a helicopter overlooking the battle. It's all confusing to me and have haunted me all these years because of the eerie similarity to Ong Tranh in 1967. Even the name Cpt Jim Blackwell is recalled for this battle, though I know a captain of that same name died in Ong Tranh 1967.If anyone can help me with clarifying all of this I would greatly appreciate it.

i am trying to find out if anyone can give me any information about Clifford J Helms, he was in Vietnam 1967-1969. The veterans say they have no record of him being there but they acknowledge he was in Germany during this time. He is in a nursing home and doesn't remember very much, he has dementia and many other health issues. I am trying to get help but they are not doing anything to help us. He wasn't allowed to tell his family where is was when he went to Vietnam. He knows he was in Calvary Bloody One but the Va says not. Thank you for taking the time to bring us this site, I was HHC 2/2nd 6 months in Commo, then 6 months at radar towers at thunder NDPs. Aug 67-68 My most vivid memory of Vietnam was Oct.17 we were at Caisson III N. we were in the 10M track monitoring radios when the Black Lions made contact. A day I will never forget.

Such memories! I was the "sacraficial lieutenant" to lead the fist convoy to Lai Khe in October 1965. I was met by a LT Colonel, the only person there, who had landed by helicopter. I expected that to be my last day on earth. I had been informed of this duty by a note attached to my cot at 2 AM the morning of departure from Ben Hoa. I was a 2nd Lt with the 3rd Bde Medical Battalion. Our 130 man Clearing Station (like a Mash) saved so many lives. Our 5 doctors and medics were the best of the best! I retired as an 06 in 1993.

i am very interested in any veitnam gallery my father served in 67-68 and was'nt and to this day still hasent been recognized for serving his country even though they had a wealth of evidence, back then of course. all the pictures and movies have been lost but are still out there. im glad people posts there pictures. and if any one is going through the same as my father, not being recognized, please speak out and write a post

I was the Arty forward observer with Alpha Company 2/28 in 67 during Billings and numerous other operations prior to that campaign. Captain Donald Sawtelle was the company commander and 1 was a 1st Lt. When in Lai Khe I shared a hooch with Lt Brad Boeham and Lt Welch. Billings was by far the most trying operation I was on. I have seen different versions of how bad it was, but I noticed that nothing is mentioned about the Recon Platoon being hit by friendly fires (remember a bomb fell short in the woods at the south end of the LZ. I also remember how bad the 1/16th got hit and churning up the North West quadrant of landing zone xray until it was just smoking branches and kindling - the forest just disappeared on the northeast side. Vietcong had overrun some of the line and we were asked by the platoon leader to bring fire on their own position. That was an awful situation. I know that when I controlled fire on the northwest quadrant we brought it in so close that we were being hit by our own shrapnel nothing serious but it did hurt. I was hit in the back by a small sliver and on the foot with a piece that did nothing but bounced off my boot and hurt like hell..It hurt worse than the little piece that penetrated my shoulder. Captain Sawtelle rotated back home after billings and i was given a nice job of fire direction officer - little safer when you are underground.. Oddly I was the fire direction officer firing for my replacement when Terry Allen brought his men back the same path they went in on and was overran that 17th Oct 67 . My replacement was killed along with my previous Kilo – Sadly I do not remember his name, but he was one hell of a great guy. I do have pictures of him and maybe someone will recognize him. Thanks for sharing the great pics! I was stationed at the microwave site just down the road from you in 67&68. We used to sneak down and use your showers when you were in the field. I especially enjoyed the barber story, I was on night security when the MPs brought him in. He was my regular barber-no more shaves for me after that! I was always in awe of the Black Lions, thanks to all of you for your sacrifices.

I was an operator with the Rome Plows and wounded 8/19/67 on Operation Paul Bunyan. Stepped on trip wire next to Pagoda. Couldn't get a Med-a-Vac for me so they called in a WhirlyBird (bubble copter). Does anyone have any pictures of the incident??? Jim Bouchard nsmb@gis.net

Dave, My father, SP6 Edvent Grinnell served with the HHC,2d Bn,22nd Inf. He was a medic assigned to the Medical APC "Hemostat Hilton". I believe it was 1967-69. CPT {Doc) Jack Coyer,SP5 Joe Passilla,SP4 Warren Vance and PFC Chuck Roman served together in 1968 on the APC. He was an enlisted man,returning to active duty in 1959. He was awarded the Bronze Star in October 1968. After retiring from the Army..He returned to his hometown of Natchez,Ms... July 09,2001 after a long battle with cancer caused by complications of "Agent Orange", He died. He lost a nose to this last enemy. but he fought the battle with the courage he had fought in the Vietnam War. Thank you for sharing your memories and thanks to all who served during the Vietnam War.

First I thank Doug Meyer who served in Viet Nam with my little brother Tom Watts who was from Anaheim, Ca. Thank you Doug for sending me this link. I want to thank all of you men and women who served out country. I have only grandsons and from small little boys they have known the stories of my brother Tom. I wanted them to know and understand the sacrifices of young men and women that they remember these when making choices in their lives that it may not be taken for granted. My brother Tom was a crew chief on a helicopter and was killed. i was with F co., 52nd lrrps, 1st infantry division from early march of '68 to the following may- capt. price was c.o. at that time. then went to C co., 1st bn., 26th rgt.[blue spadders]... base camp for both assignments was lai khe. can't believe it was all more than 40 yrs. ago. thanks for the memories!

I was drafted in September 1966 along with another gentleman by the name of Mike Arias. Mike was in the 2/28th Infantry from March 1967, to March 1968. Him and I were drafted together in Phoenix, Arizona. Mike was originally from Douglas, Arizona. I believe that Mike was a member of Bravo Company, but I cannot be sure. I was in the 1/16th infantry for the exact same time assigned to HQ Co. If you remember Mike, let me know. I still have contact with him from time to time, because he lives in Mesa, AZ last I knew. I live in Gilbert which makes up some of the southern border of Mesa.

I was with the engineers in the rubber plantation from Dec. 67 to Dec. 68 - someone told me we were the 1st of the 1st, I'm not sure. Among other things, we swept Highway 1 half way to Saigon every morning. I was on Operation Paul Bunyon but don't remember the names of other operations, there were a few. My daughter and grand daughters are taking me back this summer. Wow.

Doc Reynolds, i read your site where you spoke about the mess hall artillery hit. you mentioned that you'd met the soldier , and his leg was saved, and you'd said that you were assisted by someone, but didn't know the name. i believe it was me. a spec-4 with the 121st sig. corp./1st inf. div. do you remember the guys name who's legs was saved ? was it mitchell. i've wondered for years if he survived, and it would be so nice to know that was him, and not only survived, but kept his leg. please let me know, thank you.

my father anton Charles koehler (buddy) served '67-68' 1st div inf 2/28 black lions, my father has cancer that matasticised from his kidney that he had removed, it now is in his lungs (no cure). He tells me he was in loc nihn as well as lai khe, he was attached to the 1st special forces as well. I can't think of any better Christmas gift to him then to find some of his brothers that served in his unit or with him and you all reunite; as I don't know how long he has. this a great site. I remember leaving Travis AFB after the tour to go home to Ohio. I had changed and the world around me had changed. Years later I came across a quote from Churchill in a book The Last Lion, I felt it described my youth before the tour and my maturity afteward... “Brave deeds, brighten the picture of war with beautiful colors, till from a distance it looks magnificent, and the dark background and the dirty brown canvas are scarcely seen… ”On this day, as past Veterans Days I say "Rest in Peace Brothers you will not be forgotten".

Jim Norgon was one of the most highly decorated Black Lion medics in '67-'68. When I left I believe his Purple Heart count stood at 4, with numerous decorations for valor. He never hesitated, and always put the guys in his platoon ahead of his own safety when the firing started. He has always had my deepest respect.

Dave, I Flew as a door gunner with the 188th Assault Helicopter Company "Black Widows" out of Dau Tieng on October 17, 1967 when you guys were ambushed and it will always be in my thoughts. We supported you that day and probably other days during Shenandoah II. Dau Tieng was hit later in the month by the same VC Regiment that hit you guys. Ong Thanh was a very bad place...just like the Michelin Rubber Plantation. Thanks for taking the time to put together this web page. WELCOME HOME BROTHER.

Although my focus is on the 2/28th Inf., which was the unit with which I served, the 1/28th Inf. Black Lions are the other half of the 28th Infantry Regiment. They have also served with distinction in multiple theaters of operation. In Vietnam, the 1/28 Inf. Black Lions fought in multiple major battles, including Loc Ninh in Nov. '67. The 1/28th Inf. was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, the nation's highest unit decoration, for gallantry in the Battle of Ap Cho Da, in November '66. They are also proud to be called Black Lions.

Absotivley Posilutely, F*****g amazing! I have been looking at the photos and reading the captions and comments for the past hour. I was drawn back,42 years after the fact, to the time I spent as an 18/19 year old medic in Lai Khe RVN. I cherish those memories, even the ones which bring sadness and tears. It was the best adventure of my life. Because of the reception that I and others received when we returned home, I always go out of my way to thank any service member that I see in uniform for their service! Never EVER EVER forget!!

Hi i am looking for guys that were in the 2/28 C co i was 2/3 squade leader i was wonded but not there, but i was there durning the 3 nights of the wave attacks until we got the arty in to fire point blank at the gooks i was on LP the first night they hit us with two new guys but when the s--t happened they left me out there with their wepons and the radio when i was finally told to come back in i went looking for them, they were hiding from me the bad thing was i was their squad leader i was 2/3 so if anyone remembers me or the time it happened i would be very greatful, the VA is giving me a hard time with my PTSD saying i was not in the line of fire, i was wonded later on but the army never put that on my records at least none that i have found thats why i'm trying to prove that i was there i was shot in the head so i do remember names just the events so if some one remembers SGT CANO 2nd platoon 3rd squad please let me know sgtleadhead@gmail.com love and respect Ramon Cano

Ron Moreno was a soldier with Bravo Co., 3rd Platoon. He was an outstanding soldier who took on all kinds of difficult tasks (like checking out tunnels) and is highly respected by all of us who had the privilege of serving with him. Unlike most of the rest of us, Ron could probably still fit into his old uniform (not to mention a VC tunnel).

My name is carol Hazam and I teach senior English at James W. Robinson Secondary School, which is the largest high school in the state of Virginia and the only high school named to honor a soldier who fought in Vietnam. Instead of a standard research paper, my students conduct authentic research as an extension of the novel The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, which is a novel about Viet Nam. Each year I am ask my students to select one soldier from the Vietnam Memorial Wall and collect primary source information, such as anecdotal stories, copies of photos, copies of certificates, and other documents through email correspondence with those who know more about the soldier than what the Vietnam Memorial Virtual Wall is able to offer. I want my seniors, many of whom voted for the first time this year, to appreciate their freedoms, as well as discover the meaning of duty, honor, and patriotism. My students design a multi-media presentation of their research, which will be narrated and will include a full bibliography. They also keep a Correspondence Notebook where they collect and organize all correspondence and related materials. Both the notebook and a copy of the multi-media presentation will be sent to the Vietnam Archives at Texas Tech University. One of my students is researching Doc Neal, which led us to Sonny Gratzer. He provided us with some information about Neal, as well as a link to his site General Issue Blues. While reading through his site I noticed that you have photo credits for many of the photos in his photo gallery. I also noticed that it is possible to copy these images. I would like to know if you would allow my student, Brittany, to include several of your photos in her presentation. Her work will include a Works Cited at the end and each image will be individually cited within her presentation. I am also wondering if you knew Doc Neal and could offer any information and/or anecdotal stories that would help us document his tour of duty in Viet Nam. We know a little about Irma and Charlie for example, and perhaps you have some more specific recollections that could add more detail. Plus, if you know how we could contact others from the unit that may remember something about Doc Neal, we would certainly appreciate contact information or, you could forward this request and they could contact me. I was a grunt with A Co,1st & 16th (BRO)from Jun 67-68. I remember when we got the word about what happened to the Black Lions, and on Oct. 20 our company was sent to search the battle ground for missing men, weapons etc. In a small way I have always felt a bond with them. When I saw some of the vietcong tunnels on my visit to vietnam, I was claustrophobic. Your pictures remain a reminder of the sufferings and costs to human lives. Good documetary shots.

Dave, Very nice memorial site. Inspires me to put something together from my pictures. I was with Naval Support Activity, Saigon, from April '67 to December of '68, serving as a navy photographer's mate. Was then in Danang for a few months in late '69 manning the photo processing vans for VAP-61, a heavy photo squadron based on Guam. We flew night aerial reconnaissance flights over the North in RA-3Bs.

I was a Crusader pilot off the aircraft carrier Hancock back then. Your photos brought back many memories of friends I lost over there. You were there at a pretty tough time. I came a few years later. I made four tours to the area and on my last Line Period, most stayed in Cubi Point playing in a softball tournament while Saigon fell. The Hancock came back with a boat full of refugees. I was in charge of helping them out on Grande Island before they were airlifted in 141's to the US. I will return again. Silver

Thank you Tom. The same to you. I just had a pleasant and lengthy conversation with one of my friends from 2/28th. He is battling multiple myeloma, which is linked to Agent Orange exposure. Others have suffered the effects of diabetes and various cancers. We all need to be thankful for what we have, especially health and family. They are precious commodities. Dave, your gallery touched me and took me back to a different time and place. Although it was 40+ years ago (I was there for two tours), it seems like yesterday, as I'm sure it does to you as well. Your experiences were considerably more difficult than mine and I salute you and all your colleagues for their service to their country ... just as we now do for all the troops in the mid-East and elsewhere.
