Vietnam War '67 - '68

Photos from a tour in Vietnam as a combat medic with the 2/2nd Infantry (Mechanized) Ramrods and 2/28th Infantry Black Lions, 1st Infantry Division. Although most were, not all of these photos were taken by me personally. Some were taken by friends or came from archives or other sources. I have had the privilege of reconnecting with many of the guys I served with in the last several years through the magic of the internet. They were brave soldiers and I am blessed to have these good friends whose courage and loyalty I respect and treasure.

The gallery shares experiences and people that were important in my life and the lives of others. It also attempts to recognize those who should be more than just names on a wall or award citations. I have added details and recollections when relevant (although sometimes irreverently and probably not always accurately) and links to other sources in order to provide more information. If you are interested in historical photos you will find some of those. If you are interested in learning more about what those photos mean then please read the narratives and follow the links. Ron Moreno was a soldier with Bravo Co., 3rd Platoon. He was an outstanding soldier who took on all kinds of difficult tasks (like checking out tunnels) and is highly respected by all of us who had the privilege of serving with him. Unlike most of the rest of us, Ron could probably still fit into his old uniform (not to mention a VC tunnel).

I recently had the priviledge to meet Tom Hinger. I live and teach in his home town of Latrobe. He sent me the address to your gallery. I teach a semester Vietnam course and was hopeful that I would be able to allow my students to use your photographs in their final multi-media presentation. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for such a wonderful gallery of photographs. Meeting Tom Hinger was a thrill for me because I had read the book by David Maraniss and have fished with Tom's brother Andy. My name is carol Hazam and I teach senior English at James W. Robinson Secondary School, which is the largest high school in the state of Virginia and the only high school named to honor a soldier who fought in Vietnam. Instead of a standard research paper, my students conduct authentic research as an extension of the novel The Things They Carried by Tim O�Brien, which is a novel about Viet Nam. Each year I am ask my students to select one soldier from the Vietnam Memorial Wall and collect primary source information, such as anecdotal stories, copies of photos, copies of certificates, and other documents through email correspondence with those who know more about the soldier than what the Vietnam Memorial Virtual Wall is able to offer. I want my seniors, many of whom voted for the first time this year, to appreciate their freedoms, as well as discover the meaning of duty, honor, and patriotism. My students design a multi-media presentation of their research, which will be narrated and will include a full bibliography. They also keep a Correspondence Notebook where they collect and organize all correspondence and related materials. Both the notebook and a copy of the multi-media presentation will be sent to the Vietnam Archives at Texas Tech University. One of my students is researching Doc Neal, which led us to Sonny Gratzer. He provided us with some information about Neal, as well as a link to his site General Issue Blues. While reading through his site I noticed that you have photo credits for many of the photos in his photo gallery. I also noticed that it is possible to copy these images. I would like to know if you would allow my student, Brittany, to include several of your photos in her presentation. Her work will include a Works Cited at the end and each image will be individually cited within her presentation. I am also wondering if you knew Doc Neal and could offer any information and/or anecdotal stories that would help us document his tour of duty in Viet Nam. We know a little about Irma and Charlie for example, and perhaps you have some more specific recollections that could add more detail. Plus, if you know how we could contact others from the unit that may remember something about Doc Neal, we would certainly appreciate contact information or, you could forward this request and they could contact me. I was a grunt with A Co,1st & 16th (BRO)from Jun 67-68. I remember when we got the word about what happened to the Black Lions, and on Oct. 20 our company was sent to search the battle ground for missing men, weapons etc. In a small way I have always felt a bond with them. When I saw some of the vietcong tunnels on my visit to vietnam, I was claustrophobic. Your pictures remain a reminder of the sufferings and costs to human lives. Good documetary shots.

Dave, Very nice memorial site. Inspires me to put something together from my pictures. I was with Naval Support Activity, Saigon, from April '67 to December of '68, serving as a navy photographer's mate. Was then in Danang for a few months in late '69 manning the photo processing vans for VAP-61, a heavy photo squadron based on Guam. We flew night aerial reconnaissance flights over the North in RA-3Bs.

I was a Crusader pilot off the aircraft carrier Hancock back then. Your photos brought back many memories of friends I lost over there. You were there at a pretty tough time. I came a few years later. I made four tours to the area and on my last Line Period, most stayed in Cubi Point playing in a softball tournament while Saigon fell. The Hancock came back with a boat full of refugees. I was in charge of helping them out on Grande Island before they were airlifted in 141's to the US. I will return again. Silver

Thank you Tom. The same to you. I just had a pleasant and lengthy conversation with one of my friends from 2/28th. He is battling multiple myeloma, which is linked to Agent Orange exposure. Others have suffered the effects of diabetes and various cancers. We all need to be thankful for what we have, especially health and family. They are precious commodities. Dave, your gallery touched me and took me back to a different time and place. Although it was 40+ years ago (I was there for two tours), it seems like yesterday, as I'm sure it does to you as well. Your experiences were considerably more difficult than mine and I salute you and all your colleagues for their service to their country ... just as we now do for all the troops in the mid-East and elsewhere.
