Vietnam War '67 - '68

Photos from a tour in Vietnam as a combat medic with the 2/2nd Infantry (Mechanized) Ramrods and 2/28th Infantry Black Lions, 1st Infantry Division. Although most were, not all of these photos were taken by me personally. Some were taken by friends or came from archives or other sources. I have had the privilege of reconnecting with many of the guys I served with in the last several years through the magic of the internet. They were brave soldiers and I am blessed to have these good friends whose courage and loyalty I respect and treasure.

The gallery shares experiences and people that were important in my life and the lives of others. It also attempts to honor those who should be more than just names on a wall or award citations. I have added details and recollections when relevant (although sometimes irreverently and probably not always accurately) and links to other sources in order to provide more information. If you are interested in historical photos you will find some of those. If you are interested in learning more about what those photos mean then please read the narratives and follow the links.

Comments are very much appreciated, but please be patient if your comments do not show immediately. Due to a problem with inappropriate comments left by one individual I have had to alter the settings to give myself the opportunity to review all comments before they are posted and delete any that are inappropriate. Sometimes that takes days, since I don't check the galleries daily.

NOTE: Feb. 15, 2012, I put the gallery in a more chronological order, for what it's worth. I'm going to have to do a lot more fine-tuning before I'm happy with the new order.

Hello Veterans and THANK YOU for serving. I just spent a couple days with my Uncle Master Sgt John Churchill who was in country for a sum total of almost 5 years and at Caisson for 120 days. He is very ill now, and I thought it would be nice to locate someone who served with him.

Dave, I really enjoyed viewing your photos. I was in Lai Khe with 173rd AHC 1970-71 (Robin Hoods) your photos brought back many memories. I would like to ask a tramendous favor of the viewers of your gallery and your permission to post it. The Robbin Hoods had a yearbook for the year I was there 70-71. I was the guy that took the photographer around the company area to take the shots for the yearbook. My yearbook was lost in a house fire a few years ago. Dave, Tom Briggs directed me to your site. I'm certainly impressed and touched. So many returning memories as I went through the photos and comments. I came into the area in '65 with the Ist Inf. main body. I was an 11F in G-3. Spent most of my time in Div.Forward in An Loc and Loc Ninh. I returned to 'Nam in '68 as a combat artist. I arrived in your area the afternoon prior to the death of Gen. Ware. That was a particularly sad day for me since Gen. Ware was my CG in the Pentagon and had much to do with my combat art assignment.I never hooked up with him since he was killed less than 24 hrs later. I'm currently working on a series of paintings depicting those early years of the war and would like to include a couple featuring the Big Red One and possibly highlighting the Black Lions. To do this I'd need access to and permission to use some of your photos as source images for the paintings. Any help I can get would certainly be appreciated.

These are fantastic pictures. From about April, 1968 to August,1968 I was Forward Observer Asst to Lt. Charles Smith Forward Observer of Alpha Co. 2/28. After he went home, I became the forward observer Sgt. Henry E. Smith( niner one romero ) for Alpha Co. I was called Smitty then.I was permanently assigned to Charlie Battery 2/33rd Artillery.There was a battle around May or June, 1968 that consisted of a batallion (2nd/28th)size S&D coming in contact with a regiment of NVA in a massive bunker complex on a hill near I think Loc Ninh. To my recollection, Delta was in lead with Alpha and Charlie behind them. A lot of guys got killed and wounded. I recall that we came off that hill escorted by air strikes to our rear and 11 Armoured Cav. on point. This was a battle it seems very similar to Ong Tranh in October, 1967. I remember the company commander and several others in the command section getting killed by a short round being fired line over us. The round hit a tree showering down sharpnel killing everyone directly underneath. There was a Commander who was killed while in a helicopter overlooking the battle. It's all confusing to me and have haunted me all these years because of the eerie similarity to Ong Tranh in 1967. Even the name Cpt Jim Blackwell is recalled for this battle, though I know a captain of that same name died in Ong Tranh 1967.If anyone can help me with clarifying all of this I would greatly appreciate it.

I was in lai khe for tet. I was with signal company. worked on the radio relay site. If not for the daily 122mm rockets, wasnt a bad place. we wud sneak into the village at night lol. that wasnt very smart. grew up fast.

Yes, I was a Doc, a 91B combat medic. We tried to save them all, but sometimes we couldn't. It hurt then and still does.

i am trying to find out if anyone can give me any information about Clifford J Helms, he was in Vietnam 1967-1969. The veterans say they have no record of him being there but they acknowledge he was in Germany during this time. He is in a nursing home and doesn't remember very much, he has dementia and many other health issues. I am trying to get help but they are not doing anything to help us. He wasn't allowed to tell his family where is was when he went to Vietnam. He knows he was in Calvary Bloody One but the Va says not. He was from the Knighstown, Spiceland, Carthage Indiana area if anyone has any information I would appreciate, I only have 30 days to request another hearing. Thank You Sandi Helms Wife

Lt. Lane, I was a medic with the 3rd. Brid. clearing house from 1966-1967. M y commander was Cpt. David Lagasse M.D. Yes we did save a lot of lives. I f I remember right we lost a Dental Officer who voluntered to go out on a Dust Off mission. The chopper was shot down. Thank you for taking the time to bring us this site, I was HHC 2/2nd 6 months in Commo, then 6 months at radar towers at thunder NDPs. Aug 67-68 My most vivid memory of Vietnam was Oct.17 we were at Caisson III N. we were in the 10M track monitoring radios when the Black Lions made contact. A day I will never forget.

Such memories! I was the "sacraficial lieutenant" to lead the fist convoy to Lai Khe in October 1965. I was met by a LT Colonel, the only person there, who had landed by helicopter. I expected that to be my last day on earth. I had been informed of this duty by a note attached to my cot at 2 AM the morning of departure from Ben Hoa. I was a 2nd Lt with the 3rd Bde Medical Battalion. Our 130 man Clearing Station (like a Mash) saved so many lives. Our 5 doctors and medics were the best of the best! I retired as an 06 in 1993.

i am very interested in any veitnam gallery my father served in 67-68 and was'nt and to this day still hasent been recognized for serving his country even though they had a wealth of evidence, back then of course. all the pictures and movies have been lost but are still out there. im glad people posts there pictures. and if any one is going through the same as my father, not being recognized, please speak out and write a post

I was the Arty forward observer with Alpha Company 2/28 in 67 during Billings and numerous other operations prior to that campaign. Captain Donald Sawtelle was the company commander and 1 was a 1st Lt. When in Lai Khe I shared a hooch with Lt Brad Boeham and Lt Welch. Billings was by far the most trying operation I was on. I have seen different versions of how bad it was, but I noticed that nothing is mentioned about the Recon Platoon being hit by friendly fires (remember a bomb fell short in the woods at the south end of the LZ. I also remember how bad the 1/16th got hit and churning up the North West quadrant of landing zone xray until it was just smoking branches and kindling - the forest just disappeared on the northeast side. Vietcong had overrun some of the line and we were asked by the platoon leader to bring fire on their own position. That was an awful situation. I know that when I controlled fire on the northwest quadrant we brought it in so close that we were being hit by our own shrapnel nothing serious but it did hurt. I was hit in the back by a small sliver and on the foot with a piece that did nothing but bounced off my boot and hurt like hell..It hurt worse than the little piece that penetrated my shoulder. Captain Sawtelle rotated back home after billings and i was given a nice job of fire direction officer - little safer when you are underground.. Oddly I was the fire direction officer firing for my replacement when Terry Allen brought his men back the same path they went in on and was overran that 17th Oct 67 . My replacement was killed along with my previous Kilo – Sadly I do not remember his name, but he was one hell of a great guy. I do have pictures of him and maybe someone will recognize him. Thanks for sharing the great pics! I was stationed at the microwave site just down the road from you in 67&68. We used to sneak down and use your showers when you were in the field. I especially enjoyed the barber story, I was on night security when the MPs brought him in. He was my regular barber-no more shaves for me after that! I was always in awe of the Black Lions, thanks to all of you for your sacrifices.

I was an operator with the Rome Plows and wounded 8/19/67 on Operation Paul Bunyan. Stepped on trip wire next to Pagoda. Couldn't get a Med-a-Vac for me so they called in a WhirlyBird (bubble copter). Does anyone have any pictures of the incident??? Jim Bouchard nsmb@gis.net

Dave, My father, SP6 Edvent Grinnell served with the HHC,2d Bn,22nd Inf. He was a medic assigned to the Medical APC "Hemostat Hilton". I believe it was 1967-69. CPT {Doc) Jack Coyer,SP5 Joe Passilla,SP4 Warren Vance and PFC Chuck Roman served together in 1968 on the APC. He was an enlisted man,returning to active duty in 1959. He was awarded the Bronze Star in October 1968. After retiring from the Army..He returned to his hometown of Natchez,Ms... July 09,2001 after a long battle with cancer caused by complications of "Agent Orange", He died. He lost a nose to this last enemy. but he fought the battle with the courage he had fought in the Vietnam War. Thank you for sharing your memories and thanks to all who served during the Vietnam War.

First I thank Doug Meyer who served in Viet Nam with my little brother Tom Watts who was from Anaheim, Ca. Thank you Doug for sending me this link. I want to thank all of you men and women who served out country. I have only grandsons and from small little boys they have known the stories of my brother Tom. I wanted them to know and understand the sacrifices of young men and women that they remember these when making choices in their lives that it may not be taken for granted. My brother Tom was a crew chief on a helicopter and was killed. i was with F co., 52nd lrrps, 1st infantry division from early march of '68 to the following may- capt. price was c.o. at that time. then went to C co., 1st bn., 26th rgt.[blue spadders]... base camp for both assignments was lai khe. can't believe it was all more than 40 yrs. ago. thanks for the memories!

I was drafted in September 1966 along with another gentleman by the name of Mike Arias. Mike was in the 2/28th Infantry from March 1967, to March 1968. Him and I were drafted together in Phoenix, Arizona. Mike was originally from Douglas, Arizona. I believe that Mike was a member of Bravo Company, but I cannot be sure. I was in the 1/16th infantry for the exact same time assigned to HQ Co. If you remember Mike, let me know. I still have contact with him from time to time, because he lives in Mesa, AZ last I knew. I live in Gilbert which makes up some of the southern border of Mesa.

I was with the engineers in the rubber plantation from Dec. 67 to Dec. 68 - someone told me we were the 1st of the 1st, I'm not sure. Among other things, we swept Highway 1 half way to Saigon every morning. I was on Operation Paul Bunyon but don't remember the names of other operations, there were a few. My daughter and grand daughters are taking me back this summer. Wow.

Doc Reynolds, i read your site where you spoke about the mess hall artillery hit. you mentioned that you'd met the soldier , and his leg was saved, and you'd said that you were assisted by someone, but didn't know the name. i believe it was me. a spec-4 with the 121st sig. corp./1st inf. div. do you remember the guys name who's legs was saved ? was it mitchell. i've wondered for years if he survived, and it would be so nice to know that was him, and not only survived, but kept his leg. please let me know, thank you.

my father anton Charles koehler (buddy) served '67-68' 1st div inf 2/28 black lions, my father has cancer that matasticised from his kidney that he had removed, it now is in his lungs (no cure). He tells me he was in loc nihn as well as lai khe, he was attached to the 1st special forces as well. I can't think of any better Christmas gift to him then to find some of his brothers that served in his unit or with him and you all reunite; as I don't know how long he has. I remember leaving Travis AFB after the tour to go home to Ohio. I had changed and the world around me had changed. Years later I came across a quote from Churchill in a book The Last Lion, I felt it described my youth before the tour and my maturity afteward... “Brave deeds, brighten the picture of war with beautiful colors, till from a distance it looks magnificent, and the dark background and the dirty brown canvas are scarcely seen… ”On this day, as past Veterans Days I say "Rest in Peace Brothers you will not be forgotten".

Jim Norgon was one of the most highly decorated Black Lion medics in '67-'68. When I left I believe his Purple Heart count stood at 4, with numerous decorations for valor. He never hesitated, and always put the guys in his platoon ahead of his own safety when the firing started. He has always had my deepest respect.

Dave, I Flew as a door gunner with the 188th Assault Helicopter Company "Black Widows" out of Dau Tieng on October 17, 1967 when you guys were ambushed and it will always be in my thoughts. We supported you that day and probably other days during Shenandoah II. Dau Tieng was hit later in the month by the same VC Regiment that hit you guys. Ong Thanh was a very bad place...just like the Michelin Rubber Plantation. Thanks for taking the time to put together this web page. WELCOME HOME BROTHER.

Although my focus is on the 2/28th Inf., which was the unit with which I served, the 1/28th Inf. Black Lions are the other half of the 28th Infantry Regiment. They have also served with distinction in multiple theaters of operation. In Vietnam, the 1/28 Inf. Black Lions fought in multiple major battles, including Loc Ninh in Nov. '67. The 1/28th Inf. was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, the nation's highest unit decoration, for gallantry in the Battle of Ap Cho Da, in November '66. They are also proud to be called Black Lions.

Absotivley Posilutely, F*****g amazing! I have been looking at the photos and reading the captions and comments for the past hour. I was drawn back,42 years after the fact, to the time I spent as an 18/19 year old medic in Lai Khe RVN. I cherish those memories, even the ones which bring sadness and tears. It was the best adventure of my life. Because of the reception that I and others received when we returned home, I always go out of my way to thank any service member that I see in uniform for their service! Never EVER EVER forget!!

Hi i am looking for guys that were in the 2/28 C co i was 2/3 squade leader i was wonded but not there, but i was there durning the 3 nights of the wave attacks until we got the arty in to fire point blank at the gooks i was on LP the first night they hit us with two new guys but when the s--t happened they left me out there with their wepons and the radio when i was finally told to come back in i went looking for them, they were hiding from me the bad thing was i was their squad leader i was 2/3 so if anyone remembers me or the time it happened i would be very greatful, the VA is giving me a hard time with my PTSD saying i was not in the line of fire, i was wonded later on but the army never put that on my records at least none that i have found thats why i'm trying to prove that i was there i was shot in the head so i do remember names just the events so if some one remembers SGT CANO 2nd platoon 3rd squad please let me know sgtleadhead@gmail.com love and respect Ramon Cano

He was an outstanding soldier who took on all kinds of difficult tasks (like checking out tunnels) and is highly respected by all of us who had the privilege of serving with him. My name is carol Hazam and I teach senior English at James W. Robinson Secondary School, which is the largest high school in the state of Virginia and the only high school named to honor a soldier who fought in Vietnam. Instead of a standard research paper, my students conduct authentic research as an extension of the novel The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, which is a novel about Viet Nam. Each year I am ask my students to select one soldier from the Vietnam Memorial Wall and collect primary source information, such as anecdotal stories, copies of photos, copies of certificates, and other documents through email correspondence with those who know more about the soldier than what the Vietnam Memorial Virtual Wall is able to offer. I want my seniors, many of whom voted for the first time this year, to appreciate their freedoms, as well as discover the meaning of duty, honor, and patriotism. My students design a multi-media presentation of their research, which will be narrated and will include a full bibliography. They also keep a Correspondence Notebook where they collect and organize all correspondence and related materials. Both the notebook and a copy of the multi-media presentation will be sent to the Vietnam Archives at Texas Tech University. One of my students is researching Doc Neal, which led us to Sonny Gratzer. He provided us with some information about Neal, as well as a link to his site General Issue Blues. While reading through his site I noticed that you have photo credits for many of the photos in his photo gallery. I also noticed that it is possible to copy these images. I would like to know if you would allow my student, Brittany, to include several of your photos in her presentation. Her work will include a Works Cited at the end and each image will be individually cited within her presentation. I am also wondering if you knew Doc Neal and could offer any information and/or anecdotal stories that would help us document his tour of duty in Viet Nam. We know a little about Irma and Charlie for example, and perhaps you have some more specific recollections that could add more detail. Plus, if you know how we could contact others from the unit that may remember something about Doc Neal, we would certainly appreciate contact information or, you could forward this request and they could contact me. I remember when we got the word about what happened to the Black Lions, and on Oct. 20 our company was sent to search the battle ground for missing men, weapons etc. In a small way I have always felt a bond with them. Dave, Very nice memorial site. Inspires me to put something together from my pictures. I was with Naval Support Activity, Saigon, from April '67 to December of '68, serving as a navy photographer's mate. Was then in Danang for a few months in late '69 manning the photo processing vans for VAP-61, a heavy photo squadron based on Guam. We flew night aerial reconnaissance flights over the North in RA-3Bs.

An excellent graphic document. It's History seen throughout the eyes of the those who made it. I was deeply touched when I visited the Vietnam War memorial in DC. Never-ending rows of names. I was a Crusader pilot off the aircraft carrier Hancock back then. Your photos brought back many memories of friends I lost over there. You were there at a pretty tough time. I came a few years later. I made four tours to the area and on my last Line Period, most stayed in Cubi Point playing in a softball tournament while Saigon fell. The Hancock came back with a boat full of refugees. I was in charge of helping them out on Grande Island before they were airlifted in 141's to the US. I will return again. Silver

Thank you Tom. The same to you. I just had a pleasant and lengthy conversation with one of my friends from 2/28th. He is battling multiple myeloma, which is linked to Agent Orange exposure. Others have suffered the effects of diabetes and various cancers. We all need to be thankful for what we have, especially health and family. They are precious commodities. Dave, your gallery touched me and took me back to a different time and place. Although it was 40+ years ago (I was there for two tours), it seems like yesterday, as I'm sure it does to you as well. Your experiences were considerably more difficult than mine and I salute you and all your colleagues for their service to their country ... just as we now do for all the troops in the mid-East and elsewhere.
