03/23/2012 - _MG_5395.jpg

Nice day off work today, well off the "job". I got a ton done today, including the disruption
of a family of red squirrels living in my tractor. I saw the adult run across the grass to the shed,
but it never clicked that she came out of the tractor. So the babies went for a little ride until
I opened the hood and discovered the nest. There were four there and I didn't want to disturb them
any further so I took the whole nest and put it in a landscape pot. I put it over by the woodpile
where I've seen red squirrels hanging out.

I made a call to a wildlife rehabilitator just in case, and he recommended I put the nest back as
close to where the tractor was as possible. I set up tarp over my workmate and put the next in a
cardboard box, raising up on some bricks to keep it from getting it with the forecasted rain.

Thankfully as we left to get some take out, I saw the mom run out from under the tarp. I will check
in the morning to see if she moved them.

Update: The babies were gone this morning and the box and nest material barely disturbed.
Momma squirrel must have moved them to a new nest.
